Back in the day, Dave and his guests on Id Hit That were my companions on every drive to and from gigs — and it was the DIY magic of it: the handheld Zoom recorder, the in-person, unprepared hangs, and yeah… the legendary 2005 Ford Escape mobile recording unit.

But here’s the twist: this time, we’re flipping the mic. Dave’s been the guy asking the questions for years… and now it’s my turn to throw them at Dave.

We get into his story: New York, Spain, LA, and now Austin, Texas — where he says he “was thinking about escaping Shawshank, LA,” and the music took him toward real Texas blues and the shuffle.

And of course, because it’s Dave… we also get into the stuff nobody says out loud — why “most guys… play it safe,” why the best stories come out when “the recorder stops recording,” and why he still believes audio-only is its own artform.

Virginia was a powerhouse on stage but more so a beacon of hope and positivity off it, which makes it that more difficult to believe she is no longer with us. 

In tribute, I want to share with you the parts of her life that she shared with me for this podcast. 

She made a couple of appearances on the show. The first one being in September 2020 which that conversation became episode 98 of the Gig Life Podcast. 

The 2nd time was in 2021 when she shared 4 gig stories which 2 of them featured in the A Few Gig Tales series. 

Im going to play all of that in its entirety here today. First up is the 2020 interview and directly after that is all 4 of her gig stories, so stick around till the end. 

For those that knew her, I hope you get comfort from hearing her voice, and for those of you who didnt, her spirit is well and truely alive here. Here infectious laugh, her knack of telling a great story, and of course her positivity.

My guest today is Australian guitar legend, educator and studio owner, Jim Kelly.

Jim has firmly established himself as a leading Australian contemporary jazz and blues guitarist, composer and educator whose reputation goes well beyond Australian shores.

In 1975 Jim co-formed CROSSFIRE – Australia’s most celebrated jazz fusion group.

From 1975-87 Jim perfected the rigorous demands of the recording studio and became a highly sought-after session player performing on countless jingles, documentaries, film scores plus pop and jazz artists’ albums.

Jim also performed and recorded with Australian artists Kerrie Biddell, Renee Geyer, Johnny Farnham, Debbie Byrne, John English, Tommy Emmanuel, Erana Clark, Don Burrows, James Muller and Dale Barlow, to name but a few.

The 90’s saw a change of lifestyle for Jim with a move to Northern NSW to lecture at Southern Cross University, Lismore where he was Head of Guitar Studies for 17 years.  

Jim has since resigned from full-time academia and now runs a recording studio from his home – TONE RANGER STUDIO.

He has produced many fine albums and has quickly achieved the reputation of becoming a world-class Producer and Mixing/Mastering engineer. 

 Jim is a musician dedicated to the art of improvising, composing, performing and teaching and is always searching for new ways to expand his musical horizons.

So ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Mr Jim Kelly.

Arsene? What. A. Voice. She’s from New Orleans and comes from a long line of jazz royalty — all soul and class. Together, they’ve created some incredible music, including their latest project, Blue Basso.

This August, they’re bringing their Louisiana magic down under for an Australian tour, hitting stages across Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne — and playing alongside some of our finest, including Ray Beadle, Jamie Cameron, Shannon Stitt, and Geoff Achison.

A lot of you have most likely heard Mark's smash hit Show No Mercy which was pretty massive in the 90s, and he had another big hit in NZ in the 70s with Yesterday Was Just the Beginning of My Life, but there are many other facets to Mark career.

He’s a great song writer, he’s been a session singer, and back up vocalist for the likes of Jenny Morris, Ian Moss and many others.

Did you know that he sang the original version of the Home and Away theme song?

For the last 18 years, Mark has been the lead singer of Dragon, which he was asked to join in 2006.

After 50 years in the music industry, Mark has come full circle and a half and to celebrate his mighty career, he’s putting on a show on November 28th at The Bridge Hotel Rozelle called Mark Williams. - “Now and Then”

Mark’s daughter Taylor B-W is the support act doing her own set of Pop RnB and drum n bass.

My guest today is bass player Harry Brus.

Born in Austria, Harry and his family moved to Australia when he was 7 years old.

Inspired by Hank B Marvin and The Beatles, Harry first picked up the guitar as a teenage.

In '65 his band The Amazons scored a record deal with Festival Records and since then he has never stopped working as a professional musician.

In '67 Harry jumped at the chance to play lead guitar for pop idol Johnny Young, and later joined Tony Gaha And The In People. A fortunate encounter with sax great Geoff Oakes started Harry's lifelong love affair with soul music. During these years Harry discovered bass-giant, James Jamerson, whose legendary bass style became Harry's true inspiration on the bass. Jamerson, the great Chuck Rainey and Jerry Jemmott became the three gentlemen of bass who inspired Harry's own unique bass style.

Harry has played with a host of Australian and NZ greats. Mother Earth, Renee Geyer, Kevin Borich, Australian Crawl, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, Barry Leef, Marcia Hines Jimmy Barnes and countless others.

A workhorse of a musician, a true Australian music legend, this has kept Harry in the game for 53 years and counting.

This one’s a cracker. So sit back back and open your ears to some of the life and times of Mr Harry Brus.

John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III, born December 1 1951, was an American bass player and composer. 

Jaco was a member of  Weather Report from 1976 to 1981.

He worked with Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell, Paul Bley and Herbie Hancock amongst others, and recorded albums as a solo artist and band leader.

His bass playing employed funk, lyrical solos, bass chords, and innovative harmonics.

Jaco tragically died on September 21, 1987. He was 35 years old. 

He has been called  "the most important and ground-breaking electric bassist in history" and "perhaps the most influential electric bassist today”.

Joining me today to talk about Jaco are 4 Australia’s premier bass players and friends of mine.

My guest today is Hollie Smith.

Hollie Smith is one of New Zealand's most predominant & iconic musicians.

After working with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose, she was approached by NZ songwriting royalty Don McGlashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single ‘Bathe in The River’ that topped the New Zealand singles charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in New Zealand history.

This set the stage for Hollie’s debut album ‘Long Player’ released in 2007 which went straight to number one on the NZ charts. The album reached multi-platinum status, and was followed with sold out tours and then saw her take away several NZ music awards that year which included ‘Best Producer’, ‘Best Female Solo Artist’ and ‘Breakthrough artist of the year’.

Hollie has gone on to record 2 more solo albums, "Humour and the Misfortune of Others", and "Water or Gold". And she’s has recently begun production on a long awaited new album.

Hollie Smith is a prolific hardworking singer/songwriter and performer, and has always maintained a highly respected reputation of creating music with the upmost integrity & passion, not to mention her incredible live performances and powerhouse vocals.

Paul is a guitarist, educator, composer, producer and musical director from Sydney.

Leo Sayer, Renee Geyer, John Waters, Jeff Duff and Jimmy Barnes are just a handful of artist that have been lucky enough to have Paul involved in their music.

Paul joined Leo Sayer's band in 2005 and is still there today as guitarist and musical director.

Paul teaches music and music production at Ultimo TAFE. He has managed and operated recording studios, played on hundreds of TV and radio jingles, has played in many theatre show bands including Looking through a glass onion, Fame, Rent and Rocky Horror Show as well as been involved in feature films an TV shows.

Paul has travelled extensively through the US and Europe as well as India where he has studied the music and history of those places to fill his Musicians Playbook, which now gives him a unique approach to the music he plays today.

Ask any anyone that knows Paul, and they'll tell you just how special he is. One of Australia's finest.

Shauna is a vocalist with an outstanding pedigree.

She has an illustrious career and has worked in, not only Australia’s live music scene but also the recording industry as well.

Shauna started her career singing in 1970 with a band ‘Purple Vision’ who’s biggest highlight for Shauna was supporting Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs.

In the early 70’s Shauna tried her hand at musical theater, being in the original cast of Jesus Christ Superstar.

This led Shauna to studio work. In her role as a studio session singer her voice has been heard on many TV and radio commercials as well as soundtracks for films and TV series.

From this began a successful career singing backing vocals and touring for a couple of decades with Australia’s leading Rock Industry professionals, including Jimmy Barnes, Noiseworks, Cold Chisel, Richard Clapton and Doug Parkinson.

She even recorded an album (unreleased) of duets with Hugh Jackman and produced by the late legendary Phil Ramone.

She has appeared on TV as a judge on Network 7’s Popstars Live, as a regular panelist on Foxtel’s Beauty and The Beast, Featured singer on Foxtel’s Studio A, as well as every incarnation of the Midday Show on Nine Network as a soloist.

Shauna recently appeared as one of the 100 judges in Network 7’s All Together Now.

In the last decade Shauna has had many sell out cabaret shows in Sydney and is in high demand.

2020 marked Shauna’s 50th year as a professional musician.

An incredible singer. Shes a gem and she calls it how she sees it.

Dave is a freelance guitarist , producer, recording and mix engineer.

Having spent the last 26 in Sydney performing around town with various pop, funk bands, duo’s , jazz ensembles, and studio work, Dave has formed many longstanding musical relationships that kept him working all this time.

Carols in the Domain, Australian Idol, Voice Kids Australia, NSW Schools Spectacular, Weird Assembly, The Joe Macri band, Matt McMahon, Kate Miller Heidke and Bill Risby are just a handful of musical situations that Dave has left his mark on.

Back in 2003 Dave joined the great Doug Parkinsons band and had been a mainstay in its various lineups over the years since Dougs intimely passing in March this year. Doug and Dave were also working on a new DP album.

Loyalty, integrity and a staunch work ethic are the keys to Dave's longevity.

If you hadnt heard of the name, Dave Longo, well you have now.

Pete is a session drummer, composer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Australia.

As said in an article by Drumscence magazine:

“Pete Drummond is a world-class musician at the top of his game. His relentless pursuit of technical mastery and his deep-rooted musicality have made him one of Australia's top session drummers and soundtrack composers”

Pete is also and educator and drum teacher. He's developed a unique drum lesson that aims to revolutionise the way drumming in taught on digital platforms.

Pete has played with the best and has performed along side some of his hero's including Virgil Donati and Dave Weckl.

In 2006, Todd Hunter asked Pete to join his band Dragon and he's been playing drums, keyboards, singing and songwriting with Dragon ever since, including being inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame.

Pete also stays busy on his original projects "Light Beyond Sleep" and his 80s alter ego, “Eirie”.

We had a great time making this episode for you. Lots of laughs, lots of music and some great stories. Be sure to listen till the end.

Stan is a NZ born drummer who for the past 13 years has based himself out of Melbourne Australia. In this time he has toured and recorded with many artists locally and internationally including 48May, Miami Horror, Tonight Alive, Ecca Vandal, and Kimbra.

During his time with Kimbra, Stan played on her acclaimed debut album ‘Vows’. His Motown grooves can be heard on the track ‘Cameo Lover’ which won both an Aria and APRA award, as well as playing on her now iconic ‘Sing Sing’ sessions on YouTube, clocking up millions of views.

Stan has a strong online presence, which in 2018 was noticed by Jared Falk, the owner and creator of Canadian based drum education platform ‘Drumeo’. Jared invited Stan on to Drumeo where he spent two days performing and recording songs and courses based on his ability behind the kit, and his unique single kick technique that has since taken the drumming community by storm.

Stan is a frequent performer at drum festivals as well as where he likes to share his unique approach to the drums, and his strong mindset that goes with it.

Now based back in Papamoa NZ, Stan is excited to be back home. Already he’s been called in as backup for NZ drum and bass juggernauts, Shapeshifter, as well as kicking off a couple of new projects himself.

Stan's a coffee nut, an incredibly gifted musician and just a bloody nice guy.

James Morrison is, by anybody’s standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays piano, all the brass, saxophones, and double bass.

He's toured the world many times over, a true international jazz artist who's also played with some of the greatest jazz musicians to ever live, he's one countless awards, he's a Doctor of music, a professor of music, he has his own music academy, he flies planes, races cars, builds house boats etc etc, Just google him. But did you know he played trumpet in a punk band, played gig whilst almost dying from a venomous spider bite. Do you know why he stands in a certain spot on stage? How he can effortless move from one instrument to another? Does he still practise? These are just a few things we talked about. Some of these things he's never been asked about before.

Stephen is regarded as one of the finest guitarists in the world. Well known as guitarist with Little River Band for more that two decades, he has also played and recorded with such music legends as Warren Zevon, Glenn Frey (The Eagles), Dr. John, Christopher Cross, John Entwistle (The Who), Renee Geyer, P.F Sloan, Albert Lee, Steve Cropper, The Seekers, Noel Redding (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) Marcia Hines, John Farnham, The Bushwhackers and many, many others.

Born in Bedfordshire, U.K, Stephen was inspired to play the guitar by watching singing-cowboys on television as a child. After moving to Australia at the age of eight he quickly discovered Rock’n’roll and fell under the magic of such lead guitarists as Hank B. Marvin (The Shadows) and Chuck Berry.

He formed his first band at High School.

Hendrix and jazz great Wes Montgomery became influences as Stephen worked hard on learning as much technique as he could, while also striving to develop his own distinctive style.

That style brought him to the attention of some of Australia’s most successful recording acts and over the coming years Stephen was highly sought after as a band member and recording session player.

In August 1981 Stephen was asked to join one of the world’s most successful acts, Little River Band, as their lead guitarist. Since then he has toured the world many times over and and co-written many of their songs

Over the years Stephen has conducted music theory and improvisation seminars for guitarists, and written columns for magazines such as Sonics and Australian Musician. He has also toured schools with his highly successful one-man show The Evolution of Rock Guitar.

In the late 90s, Stephen and his family moved to Ireland. Long inspired by Irish music, Stephen now enjoys the opportunity to play with some of Ireland’s top musicians as well as writing and recording for his various groups and his solo music.

Calvin is a drummer, percussionist, songwriter and performer. He started playing professionally as a 14 year old in his home state of Michigan USA, touring with the who's who of the jazz, funk and soul scene from the 1970s onwards.

He moved to LA in the early 1980s where he continued his career as a soul/funk session drummer recording with some of the top producers of that era.

Since moving to Australia in 1988, he has had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous local and international artists including Swoop, professor Groove, Kevin Borich, Michael Wheatley, Bek Jensen, Christine Anu, Carl Orr just to name a few.

He also writes, records and tours with his own band, global groovers – Arabesk.

Calvin is a great advocate for original Australian music and stays active promoting showcase nights and music sales through his company ihearmusic.com.

Able to play almost any genre of music, it is this versatility that ensures Calvin is in demand for live performances and recording sessions.

In 2020 Calvin became part of a new children's TV and live performance group 'The Nannas & The Poppas' which airs on ABC for Kids.

Casey is a singer/songwriter, dancer, actor and presenter from Sydney.

She’s easily recognisable as one of the previous member of internationally acclaimed children’s show, Hi-5 as well as co-presenter on Girl TV.

Greg’s love of drums and “all things hittable” started at school and he has made his living playing drums and percussion ever since.

His first musical was the drum chair in “Jesus Christ, Superstar” in 1972. He has played, amongst others, “Betty Blokkbuster Follies” with Reg Livermore, “Rocky Horror Show”,”Rasputin”,“Hair”, “Big River”, “Tom Waits for No Man” and in concert at the Sydney Opera House with The Beatles White Album.

Other gigs, sessions and tours have been with Baxter Funt, Jon English & the Foster Brothers, Marcia Hines, Doug Parkinson, John Waters and Slim Dusty to name a few.

His television credits include The Don Lane Show (with Bryan Ferry), “The Aunty Jack Show” and “Star Search”.

Greg has played with Chuck Berry and Christopher Cross and toured with Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers, Joe Cocker and the Beach Boys.

Fizz Henson, sister of actor and musician John Waters, was born in the UK and worked for many years at Thames Studios including work on The Benny Hill Show amongst others. Upon moving to Australia, Fizz and Greg met on gig once and the rest is history.

Greg and Fizz share many gig stories together which you’ll get to hear today as they bounce of each other.

After dinner and a couple of drinks, I just put the recorder in the middle of the table, and off we went.

Born in Austria, Harry and his family moved to Australia when he was 7 years old.

Inspired by Hank B Marvin and The Beatles, Harry first picked up the guitar as a teenage.

In '65 his band The Amazons scored a record deal with Festival Records and since then he has never stopped working as a professional musician.

In '67 Harry jumped at the chance to play lead guitar for pop idol Johnny Young, and later joined Tony Gaha And The In People. A fortunate encounter with sax great Geoff Oakes started Harry's lifelong love affair with soul music. During these years Harry discovered bass-giant, James Jamerson, whose legendary bass style became Harry's true inspiration on the bass. Jamerson, the great Chuck Rainey and Jerry Jemmott became the three gentlemen of bass who inspired Harry's own unique bass style.

Harry has played with a host of Australian and NZ greats. Mother Earth, Renee Geyer, Kevin Borich, Australian Crawl, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, Barry Leef, Marcia Hines Jimmy Barnes and countless others.

A workhorse of a musician, a true Australian music legend, this has kept Harry in the game for 53 years and counting.

Explosive and dynamic vocalist Virginia Lillye has wooed audiences across Australia and internationally.

Having shared the stage with Gene Simmons, Gilby Clarke, Angry Anderson, Steve Balbi, John Butler, Dan Sultan, John Paul Young, Paul Grey, Jon English, Wendy Matthews, Grace Knight, Phil Emmanuel to name but a few…. she is a force to be reckoned with.

Having also lived in Europe for 11 years, Virginia appeared in productions of the musicals ‘Cats’, ‘Grease’, ‘Hair’, ‘Fame’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘The Life’.

Virginia’s original rock band, ‘Lillye’, signed with American record label, Eclipse Records and released their debut album worldwide in May 2018. The band have won several awards internationally and were nominated for ‘Best Rock Artist’ and ‘Best Hardcore/Metal Artist’ at the Australian Independent Music Awards.

Virginia starred in the recent series of The Voice Australia by bringing her rock chick edge and grit to the show!

Stephen Kendall Gadd (born April 9, 1945) is an American drummer, percussionist, and session musician.

Gadd is one of the most well-known and highly regarded studio drummers in the industry, recognised by his induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1984.

Gadd's performances on Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and "Late in the Evening", Steely Dan's "Aja” , Chick Corea’s "Night Sprite" and Al Jarreau's "Spain" are legendary and are some examples of his style.

One of the most influential drummers of all time, Steve Gadd set a new standard in contemporary drumming techniques and performance, and in doing so launched a thousand imitators.

Joining me today to talk about Steve Gadd are 4 outstanding drummers, and friends of mine.

Back at TGLP episode 93, my guest was Rob Rhodes. Rob has a Facebook live video show called The Musicians Inn where he invites people on to talk with him about different topics relating to music, the music industry. Ive been very lucky to have been invited onto his show twice now. The first time was back in May 2020 and the topic was podcasting. That was fun.

Recently, Rob asked me back to join the panel along with Bennet Livingston and Peter Hope, to talk about Music/Work balance. We discussed things like our day jobs, challenges involving working full time as well as juggling gigs, coping with long hours, favourite gigs, near misses and horror stories as well as a bunch of other stuff. Tony grew up in Sydney, the youngest of 15 children with his mother and father coming from Malta.

Music was always in the family with Tony’s first band being the family band called Africa, with his brother Marz, the drummer of the band, being particularly influential to Tony’s early development as a musician, and as a percussionist.

These were the early to mid 70s. Tony has been a professional musician ever since, having played with live or recorded with the a lot of the best including Doug Parkinson, Marcia Hines, Roger Frampton, Jenny Morris, Mark Hunter , Andrew Oh, Richard Clapton, Gina Jeffries, Jeff Duff, Tina Arena, Ian Moss, Barry Leef and many others.

Tony was also the house band percussionist for Australian Idol.

In an effort to pull back a bit from constant touring and gigging, Tony and his friend created DRUMBEAT, an interactive drums and percussion show that would tour Australian schools.

In 2011, Tony got very ill with cancer. Yet during treatment, he stilled went out and gigged.

After beating that cancer, it was time for a change so he packed up and moved out of Sydney. He now spends his days on his farm in the hunter region of NSW, and he still plays everyday.

So without further ardue, Ladies and gentleman, please give it up for Tony Azzopardi.

Born in Sydney, raised in the far north coast of NSW, Joel’s first instrument was trumpet before moving to the bass guitar at the age of 14.

After studying for a bachelor of music, Joel moved back down to Sydney.

There he worked in music shops, managed a specialty bass store, gigged and gigged, turned pro and hasn’t looked back since.

Joel plays in the Ray Mann Three, The Lachy Doley Group, plays tonnes of corporate and pub club gigs with different groups, has his own original project with his friends called Tenderfoot, and recently finished up Season 9 of The Voice Australia as a member of the incredibly talented house band.

Joel's a very laid back and humble cat, and with him its all about those supporting bass lines, the pocket, the space and knowing when it's your turn to shine. Clearly this makes Joel one of the most in demand bass players around.

So ladies and gentleman, please give it up for Joel Burton.

Rob is a singer, guitarist, entertainer, entertainment manager and band owner.

Born and raised in Sydney, Rob relocated to the NSW far north coast in 2015.

As well as the music stuff Rob has done, he’s also been a Hotel/Pub manger, restaurant manager and venue manager.

When COVID 19 hit, Rob used that time to create a couple of Facebook live shows to keep himself busy and to stay in touch with his friends ands fans . One of those being The Musicians Inn.

In this conversation today, Rob and I talk about his career to this point, the effects of COVID 19 on the music industry, a little on health and well being, some insights into performance, entertainment management and hotel management amongst other things.
