Well, we have decided to call it quits and press pause on The Meltdown City Podcast. This has been the best and most fun adventure for both of us. We are so grateful for anyone who has ever listened, liked us, supported us or been a guest on the show. We could not have done it without you.

On this episode, this very last episode, we definitely hit all of the emotions. We talk about our journey, this experience, where we were started in the beginning and where we have come. We take the time to thank a bunch of people and we know we didn't hit everyone.

We also talk about what is going on in the world with George Floyd's death and racism in America. Black Lives Matter. All lives will matter when black lives matter. We need to do better. Check out the BLM website here. Check out this resource for what you can do if you are white and how you can support racial justice.

Joe is currently fronting a new band, Floored Faces with brand new album out called ‘Escapism Prism.’ Joe is also the owner of his own construction company Viking Construction. Aaron interviews me about the genesis of my business Unwound Retreats, a wellness business for nurses. We discuss how I got unstuck from my restlessness and also how travel has impacted my life. Aaron also asks me what my life as an ICU nurse is like during the Covid 19 pandemic. So, I tell him and I get a little emotional about it but if you know me, that is no surprise.

On today's episode, we talk with Regan Walsh, a NYU-certified executive and life coach who focuses on helping women who are over-programmed and underwhelmed, reclaim their lives, both personally and professionally. Regan has coached hundreds of women through her one-on-one and group coaching programs, and she is regularly asked to give keynotes and facilitate workshops for fortune 500 companies, including Nike, QuickBooks, and Nationwide to audiences ranging from 50-500.

Regan contributes to Harvard Business Review and Forbes, and has been featured in NBC.com, FastCompany, and Columbus CEO. She is located in Columbus, Ohio and coaches women from all over the world.

On this episode we learn Regan's story and how she pivoted to life coaching. She reflects on her feelings that came up around starting a business and leaving the security of what some would call a "dream job." We are fortunate to learn from Regan as she divulges the common themes she sees women do (hint: we don't prioritize ourselves) and also what we humans do to hold ourselves back. This episode, we discuss James Clear's book "Atomic Habits - An Easy Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones." Did you know Steve Martin worked on perfecting his craft for 10 years before he got any good gigs and Jerry Seinfeld has a habit of writing jokes daily? Tiny, atomic sized habits can have a compound effect in areas of our life yet often we don't see the effect for a while. Often people give up before they can appreciate the strides they are gaining. Persistence is key to building a habit, in particular it is about showing up when you aren't feeling it but you do it anyway.

To create good habit, here are James Clear's 4 Laws:

Make it Obvious
Make it Attractive
Make it Easy
Make it Satisfying

To break a bad habit basically, it is the inverse of the 4 Laws above:

Make it Invisible
Make it Unattractive
Make it Difficult
Make it Unsatisfying

On today’s episode, we talk with Podcaster, Speaker & Family man Aaron Schlein from Sacramento, CA. He is the host of the successful Family Travel Radio — a weekly podcast presented by The Family Travel Association. Aaron shares how he got on this path to entrepreneurship by wanting to write a book about how traveling with his grandmother as a teenager changed his life. However, his initial plan fell flat. It wasn’t until he pivoted to starting a podcast that everything changed. He quotes John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneurs on Fire who says, “Having a podcast makes people pay attention to you.” And it certainly did for Aaron.

We talk with Aaron about some of the trips he took with his grandmother, like how he traveled to Russia in 1990 and how that infused him with an adventurous spirit and love of travel. Aaron is a huge advocate of family travel which he is the heart of his podcast Family Travel Radio, but he also lives his passion. He and his wife let his two kids pick where they want to go! Last year, it was London! This year it will be France!

Conversations with Photo Journalist, World Traveler and Entrepreneur Erick Prince a.k.a Minority Nomad

On today’s episode, we talk with the very talented Erick Prince, aka Minority Nomad calling in from Bangkok, Thailand. Erick is a photographer, blogger, vlogger, entrepreneur and world traveler who for several years has called Bangkok his home.

Originally from East Cleveland, Ohio Erick shares how he got started as a photographer after being given a choice between vocational school or expulsion. Choosing vocational school, more specifically photography he was gifted his first camera by his teacher, Irene Shinkle. In short order he became the school photographer shooting school dances and events and saw an opportunity for his own role in photography. After 10 years in the military. he re-focused his energy on photography and subsequently, people started gravitating towards his work.

Erick started Minority Nomad with $19,000 and a one way ticket to London with a vision to be the first African American to visit every country. We talk about how that came to be and where things stand. We discuss the Black Travel Movement and the importance of representation. “Representation matters” he says. People of color have always been traveling but they have been represented or marketed to. It is imperative to see people doing things you want to do so you know you can do it, too.

Also, on this episode, Erick shares the hardships of being a travel photographer and a digital nomad such as the highs, the lows, the judgments, the struggles on relationships and all things in between… but in the end it is worth it. And we discuss Anthony Bourdain’s recent suicide and his insight into it.

We continue on chatting about racism in America and Donald Trump. And how travel can challenge your own belief system because it pushes you are out of your comfort zone because no one is no longer reinforcing your values or beliefs.

Today we are talking to New York Times Best Selling author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, world renowned travel expert and entrepreneur Matt Kepnes, aka Nomadic Matt. Matt has an award winning blog www.nomadicmatt.com which hosts countless travel resources, plus guidebooks and e-courses. He has been featured on CNN, National Geographic, The BBC and many more. Matt just released his new travel memoir Ten Years a Nomad – A Traveler’s Journey Home and we asked him on the show to talk about it.

Matt’s new book is deeply personal which differs from his normal writing style on “the how and the what of travel.” He shares his editor’s request to go “deeper.” He tells us what it was like to head out on his own when people in his life were not as supportive, how he overcame it and whether those people are on board now. He discusses how he overcame his fears of traveling solo and how we were are all just wanting human connection. We learn how friendships are different on the road than at home and that leads towards faster friendships and makes dating look very different. We circle back to his home in Austin and ask if has the semblance of routine he was longing for.

At the end of his book, he wrote “19 lessons from 10 years of travel” and number 13 stuck a chord – “It is never too late to change.” Matt elaborates on that point and how travel gives you the space to be whoever you want to be and if your joke bombs you can just start anew at a different hostel or location.

Matt has many endeavors and he shared the genesis and vision of TravelCon a new travel industry conference that focuses on professional development and how to sustain and grow your travel business. He also touched on the mission behind his non-profit Flyte which helps under-served teens get to experience “the gift of travel.”

We learn who is inspiring him right now and some inspirational book recommendations such as Vagabonding by Rolf Potts, Wild by Cheryl Strayed, In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson and The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain.

This episode, they discuss an article written by prolific author Brene Brown, ‘On Midlife Unraveling‘ and how deeply it resonated with them. Brene writes about her own experience confronting midlife and the way in which it came crashing down.

“Like it or not, at some point during midlife, you’re going down, and after that there are only two choices: staying down or enduring rebirth” she says on midlife unraveling.

People either respond to these feelings by either embracing their unraveling, denial and digging heals in deeper, numbing it out or resisting and fighting it. Both Ali and Nicole have had their versions of this midlife unraveling so they reflect on that and where they are now.

Catching up with Coco of Morocco, a.k.a Courtney Erwin

This week, Nic and Ali catch up with their dear friend Courtney Erwin to discuss life in Morocco and how this last year has been. Coco was on the 1st season, on episode 03 so it was super fun and heart warming to catch up while she was on US soil.

On this episode, Court discusses how it feels to live in two very distinct cultures, in-between two places and the stark contrast between the drive for individualism or belonging to a community. She shares her spiritual path, as a Sufi as we talk about how to stay grounded in the modern world. We get a bit tender and spiritual as she talks about what is Sufism and how we can spend more time in our hearts and less time in our heads, trying to be in the moment. We are all our own unique versions of ourselves. “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” Joseph Campbell.

Courtney is a specialist in international and comparative law, with expertise in international human rights and Islamic law. She has over a decade of experience working internationally with religious, political, legal, and civil society actors, in addition to UN agencies, multi-lateral organizations, and foreign governments. She currently works a a religious scholar and writer living full time in Morocco.

The Happiness Hypothesis

On today’s episode, Nic & Ali catch up, talk about #meltdowns and a ghost story in a ghost town.

They did get into a book ‘The Happiness Hypothesis’ by author Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist and professor.

He talks eloquently about how our minds are like the elephant and the rider. The rider is our conscious mind and the elephant is the subconscious… And how we can tame the elephant in order to find happiness.

In the pursuit of happiness, he includes three ways to become happier such as practicing meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy or getting on SSRIs. We should spend more time doing things that make you happy are ways to increase your happiness level such as practicing random acts of kindness or being in your flow state. Also, he recommended spending more time off, less on consumer goods and nurturing your current relationships with family and friends.

And BONUS, we read travel blogger Melissa Bitz’, most recent post on Instagram about happiness since it fit right in with our topic! She offers up her recipe for happiness we couldn’t agree more!

A married mother of two and an ICU nurse, Kathy talks all about how she and her husband decided to sell their home in North Bend, WA to travel around the states in an RV for a year. Kathy gets really personal about how motherhood challenged her and her need for some serious change. So, Kathy, Leland and their two young kids set out on a great adventure. She has some incredible stories, amazing gems of places to see such as the Channel Islands off of Ventura to Custer State Park and advice on how to actually make this work!

After a year on the road, Kathy and her family settled on their new location of Durango, Colorado where she is working as a nurse and Leland is busy with his vintage car repair business. Nicole recaps TravelCon 2019, Matthew Kepne’s travel conference that was in Boston this June and the fun that was had! Some of the keynote speakers included Cheryl Strayed, Mark Manson, and Clay Hebert. Nic caught up with a few familiar faces including Melissa Bitz from Traveling Bitz, Aaron Schlein with Dramatic Dad and the Family Travel Radio Podcast, Kevin Hill with Two Adults No Kids and Erick Prince, the Minority Nomad a photojournalist. She also chatted with Meggan Kaiser, the author of Everything for Free – Free Travel for the Modern Nomad. Nicole shares Clay Hebert’s incredible advice on how the elevator pitch isn’t doing you any favors and how to properly introduce yourself.

Ali catches us up to speed on what she is reading which is Esther Perel’s the ‘State of Affairs‘ and Peggy Orenstein’s ‘Girls and Sex‘ in preparation for raising a young daughter. She is contemplating how girls are taught to view their bodies and changing that landscape. Ali also had a guilt free mommy night out with one of her best friends and details how that felt.

Sumedha Ahuja-Bahri is a patent attorney, stand-up comedian, comedy writer, playwright and producer and mother of two who lives in the DC area. She discusses how her life has always been infused with her creative side, how she got on this path and how this was received by her family, especially her father.

Sumedha co-wrote and co-produced an interactive stage comedy called “fishnet-networks.net” that ran in Boston for 3 years in the theater district. Currently, she is one of the three writers and creators on Pushers – a show about pharmaceutical reps. Sumedha divulges her creative writing process, how it felt to do her first stand-up routine and behind the scenes details on creating a web-series.

This was an thought provoking book. Have you read it? The author touts that you can find your own path to heaven and personal freedom by living this way. Certainly, there was something to be gleaned especially not taking things personally. That is a huge continual life lesson.

Nicole and Ali interview Shane Jones, one of their long time friends. Shane divulges all of his entrepreneurial pursuits, from elementary school to present day. Shane, while mostly an entrepreneur (the founder of eProject, Inc), is currently working at Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager. Of late, he is interested in AI projects and pursing comedy. He talks openly about his plan to audition for America’s Got Talent, how he practices telling robot jokes to his captive audience (his daughter) and we get to hear him perform his set! We had such a great time interviewing him and hope you enjoy the show. Shane Jones regularly mentors new entrepreneurs, and volunteers his time mentoring middle school and high school students through the non-profit Greater.
