Seven-year-old Athena Strand should have been safe at home.

Instead, on November 30, 2022, she vanished from outside her father’s property in Paradise, Texas after a FedEx delivery driver came to the home. What followed became one of the most haunting child murder cases in recent memory — a case that would ultimately lead to the arrest, conviction, and death sentence of Tanner Horner.

In this episode, I walk through the timeline of Athena’s disappearance, the search efforts that gripped the community, the disturbing evidence shown during the capital murder sentencing trial, and the heartbreaking testimony from the people who loved Athena most.

The Sirloin Stockade Massacre

On July 16, 1978, one of Oklahoma’s most haunting mass murders unfolded just before midnight at the Sirloin Stockade restaurant in Oklahoma City. Located near SW 74th and Pennsylvania Avenue, the family steakhouse became the site of unimaginable horror when three armed intruders forced six teenage and adult employees into the walk-in freezer during closing hours, where they were gunned down.

Five of the employees died on the spot. A sixth died en route to the hospital. The victims included: David Lindsey (17), David Salsman (16), Anthony Tew (17), Terri Horst (15), Louis Zacarias (43), Isaac Freeman (56)

Oklahoma City was stunned. And just weeks before, another family—Melvin and Linda Lorenz and their 12-year-old son—had also been killed on the highway, just south of town. Police would eventually connect the two scenes.

Join me as I discuss these cases around the anniversary of the killings.

Busken, a 21-year-old ballerina from Benton, Arkansas, had just finished her final semester at the University of Oklahoma when she was abducted from her apartment in Norman on December 20, 1996. Her body was found near Lake Stanley Draper that evening. Authorities said she had been bound, sexually assaulted, and shot in the back of the head.

The state of Oklahoma executed Anthony Sanchez on Thursday, September 21, at 10:19 a.m.

In this short interview with Unforbidden Truth, Sanchez proclaims his innocence, discussing his trial and his innocence shortly before his execution.

Cases: September 26, 1981 disappearance of Cinda Pallett and Charlotte Kinsey, both 13; Cheryl Genzer (25) and her sister Lisa Pennington (16), sisters, abduction from the Oklahoma State Fair on September 23, 1987, found murdered; The disappearance of 19-year-old Carlene Brown and 19-year-old Christine “Christi” Ann Gross from Rawlins, Wyoming on July 4, 1974; The disappearance of Deborah Rae Meyer from Rawlins, Wyoming on August 4, 1974; The abduction and murder of 10-year-old Jayleen Dawn Banker on August 23, 1974; Carolyn Eaton AKA "Valentine Sally," 17, who ran away from her home in Missouri around Christmas of 1981 and traveled to Arizona where she was found murdered on Valentine’s Day 1982; and the July 25, 1985 disappearance of two sisters, Rozlin Rochelle Abell, 18, and Fawn Marlene Abell, 15, in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Dena Dean | Oklahoma Cold Cases

In 1998, Dena Dean disappeared from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her vehicle was later found abandoned in the parking lot of Marvin's Food Store, but Dena was nowhere to be found. Weeks later, on June 12, 1998, her decomposed body was discovered in a field near a pond approximately two miles north of Town West, near 51st Street South and 49th West Avenue. The Tulsa Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.

More than two decades later, Dena's murder remains unsolved.

In this episode, Raven is joined by Jen Gragg and Amanda Newland Davis of Oklahoma Cold Cases and The Throwaways Podcast to examine the circumstances surrounding Dena's disappearance, the investigation that followed, and the questions that remain unanswered. Together, they discuss the known facts of the case, the impact Dena's loss had on those who knew her, and why her story deserves to be remembered.

The discussion centers around his memoir, “Redeeming Justice,” which Jarrett also narrates in audiobook form, offering listeners an intensely personal perspective on survival, identity, incarceration, and rebuilding life after exoneration.

Together, Raven and Jarrett explore the emotional realities of wrongful conviction, the failures within the justice system, advocacy work, and the responsibility that comes with telling true stories rooted in trauma and injustice.

Caitlin Wooten’s case is a heartbreaking story that led to significant legal changes in Oklahoma. In 2005, 16-year-old Ada, Okla. resident, Caitlin Wooten, was kidnapped by her mother's ex-boyfriend, who had previously held her mother hostage at gunpoint, but after his arrest was back on the streets within 30 hours and continued to pose a threat. Tragically, Caitlin’s life was cut short by him. Her case highlighted the flaws in the bail system and the need for stronger protections for victims of violent crimes.

This led to the enactment of Caitlin’s Law, officially known as the Caitlin Wooten Act, which was signed into law in 2006. It aims to strengthen bail laws by requiring individuals charged with violent crimes, such as kidnapping, to prove they are not a public danger before they can post bail. The law also enhances Oklahoma's victim protection order (VPO) laws to align more closely with federal standards, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Ada, Oklahoma - 1909. Just 2 years after Statehood, the world saw a postcard with western actors, but Adans looked on as one of the last surviving gangs of the Wild West had it out with a prominent law man. Join Raven and Holly as they discuss a dark cloud over their hometown of Ada, Oklahoma and they mystery of its early vigilantism.

In the early hours of April 19, 1909, a vigilante mob in Ada, Oklahoma, took justice into their own hands by lynching four men—Jim Miller, Jesse West, Joe Allen, and Berry B. Burell (possibly Burwell)—who were accused of murdering local rancher Gus Bobbitt. The mob, consisting of about 40 men, cut the power to the town, overpowered the jailers, and hanged the accused in a livery stable. This act was driven by the community’s frustration with the legal system and their desire to curb rampant crime in the town.
