Jethro Jones (@jethrojones), 2017 NASSP Digital Principal of the Year, is the Principal of Tanana Middle School, and host of Transformative Principal, where he interviews principals, leaders, and influencers who help improve K-12 education throughout the world. While growing up, Jethro attended five elementary schools, a middle school, and three different high schools. This experience instilled a desire to provide the most nimble educational experience possible, so that all students — no matter how long they are at his school, can pursue their own interests and work to their individual potential. Valerie is transitioning into an assistant principal role SY2018-19 in Gwinnett County, GA and has been in education for 18 yrs. She is passionate about students with disabilities and the role tech plays in their learning journey. Dan Kreiness

Dan Kreiness is a middle school instructional coach, podcast host, and connected educator who constantly searches for the most effective ways to advance education and produce high student achievement. Dan holds masters degrees in adolescent education and educational leadership and is currently a doctoral student in the field of educational leadership. He was named to the 2017 class of ASCD Emerging Leaders. He is also a Google Certified Educator, Nearpod Pionear, Flipgrid Ambassador and Hoonuit Learning Ambassador.

Dan hosts his own Leader of Learning podcast and has been a recurring host and panelist on the EduMatch Tweet and Talk podcast series. Dan is emerging as an expert presenter at education conferences, trainings, and EdCamps on topics including leadership, growth mindset, student engagement, various instructional technologies, augmented and virtual reality for education, and using social media in education. About our Guest

Lyn Hilt is an educational leadership and instructional technology consultant who uses her experiences as elementary principal, instructional technology coach, and classroom teacher to provide educators with meaningful professional development to help make innovative and lasting growth for student success. As elementary instructional technology coach, she worked with teachers and students by providing professional development opportunities and resources to staff, writing curricula, designing learning activities, and pushing into classrooms to work with students on technology-infused project work. Prior to her coaching position, Lyn served as elementary principal for five years in the same district, and it was while serving in this leadership role that she discovered the joys and benefits of connected learning and leadership. Lyn is an avid blogger and contributor to social networks such as Twitter and has presented at various local, state, and national conferences on topics ranging from professional development to networked educational leadership. Lyn is a Google for Education Certified Trainer, Google Cloud Certified (G Suite), and Apple Teacher. Lyn provides many Google for Education trainings with the fine team at Kiker Learning.

Lyn is also the community manager for the vibrant and inspiring ChangeLeaders Community, a space dedicated to pushing the boundaries of learning created by the Modern Learners team.

Lyn teaches future educational leaders through her role as an adjunct instructor and online course designer for Cabrini University. She holds K-12 principal, elementary, and middle-level math and science teaching certifications. Lyn began her career teaching fifth and sixth grades and always strives to focus her work to help best meet the needs of young people.

Lyn has contributed to various publications in print and online. She authored a chapter on using social media to support professional learning in the 3rd edition of Powerful Designs for Professional Learning, published by Learning Forward. She also contributed to The Connected Teacher: Powering Up from Powerful Learning Practice, the Voices from the Learning Revolution, and the Connected Principals blog. Her work and experiences have been featured in Education Week, THE Journal, Personal Learning Networks: Using the Power of Connections to Transform Education by Will Richardson and Rob Mancabelli, and Eric Sheninger’s Digital Leadership: Changing Paradigms for Changing Times.

11 Tips for Social Media Success by Sam Patterson

Once a day, share something specific. Take a close up picture of one kid’s work, get their hands in there.
Don’t engage the current debateThat new thing everybody is ranting about? Ignore it, it isn’t important. The debate is more energy than it is worth.
Follow widely unfollow freelyIf you are a teacher, follow teachers. If you are running a classroom account, follow classroom accounts. Unfollow at the first sign of trouble. Never feel guilty about unfollowing. Don’t show your students the raw feed unless you have a good reason.
Expect your kids and parents to read your feed They won’t read all your posts, but they will see every mistake you make. Make the right ones.
Lift up someone else’s workShare the work of the teachers and classrooms you follow. This is an easy way to stay active and share positive.
Ask questions If you see a project you like, ask a question. People love to answer questions about what they shared. Everybody learns from good questions.
Chats aren’t required People can get really excited about Twitter chats, you don’t have to. They can be overwhelming and they are not for everyone.
Turn notifications off Seriously, evil corporations are reshaping your brain’s chemistry through notifications. I am not kidding, turn that crap off.
Use threads to tie together a group of examples Post a “Title tweet” that has the name of the assignment and then “thread” the rest of the examples as replies.
Interact with those who feed your practice. If you find someone’s tweet useful or inspiring, tell them. Don’t just RT it, say “thanks” it matters.
Never forget these platforms were built to monetize outrage and disagreement, don’t make money for them.

Doug Bergman

Doug Bergman is Head of Computer Science at Porter-Gaud independent school in Charleston, SC. He has been the head of the CS department for 17+ years and been in CS education for 23+ years. For several years, he worked in industry as a programmer as well as in I.T. While attending and teaching school in the US, Japan, and France, he has traveled extensively across the globe. He is a product of public education K-16 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, M.A. in Education Administration, and is completing his Online Masters in Computer Science at Georgia Tech. He has taught in public schools, private schools, and professional schools and has worked with students from ages 5 – 99. His largest class was 300 students (I found out it was 300, not 30, in the hallway on the way to class. That was fun.) He has experience developing his own curriculum as well as using existing curriculum developed by others. In addition to being honored with regional, state, national and international recognition, he has presented at conferences worldwide. In 2017, he was selected as a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Currently, he serves on of the board of CSTA.

Richard Allen

Richard W. Allen, Ed.S. – Rich is a retired Principal with 35 years of experience as a teacher, advisor, coach, supervisor, assistant principal, and principal in the public school district. He has received many awards over the years, including Governor’s Teacher of the Year, and the Model Schools recognition by the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE). He is an adjunct professor at Monmouth University and Brookdale Community College. He is on the Principals’ steering committee at Monmouth University and the steering committee for ECET2NJPA. Rich presented with the NJPSA Leadership Academy and works with schools as a consultant. He was a member of the ELC and the OTSC with the State Department of Education. He earned his graduate certifications and degrees from Georgian Court University, Liberty University and Rutgers, The State University of NJ.

Tip 1 – Coach to Teacher Communication

Voxer – very important for keeping communication open but not filling your inbox.

Tip 2 – Teacher to Coach Communication

Utilize an online booking system (YouCanBook.Me, Appoint.ly, Google Calendar Appointment slots) etc for teachers to book times to meet with you. Saves the back and forth time in emails.
Use Remind for quick contact.

Tip 3 – Keep Track of Events and Documents

Evernote: It’s the perfect application to save documents, audio, PDF’s and it’s available on all platforms.

Tip 4 – Digital Communication and Organization

Utilize Google Docs/Folders to record conversations and coaching sessions for future conversations.

Tip 5 – Provide Resources for Personalized Learning

Keep ongoing blog as a one-stop-shop for all your teachers’ needs. Update with things you often come across for them to go back to. Also helps alleviate email you send to staff.

Tip 6 – Create Personalized Videos

Jing – a great quick screen recording tool for simple how-to videos.

Tip 7 – Create a Data Dashboard

Record important events right after they happen. It’s easy to go an entire day and forget to record important events or meetings with teachers. Use a Google Doc, Evernote, Google Keep, or Google Form to keep track of what you have done each day. Use it to create a Data Dashboard of your events. You never know when it might come in handy.

Tip 8 – Create User Groups for Group Instruction

Facebook groups – create hubs for people to share resources. It’s not just me that may have the answer.

Tip 9 – Create an Army of Foot Soldiers

Utilize your most willing teachers to assist in training/sparking innovation in others. If you build it, they will come.

Tip 10 – When in Need… Wear it!

Make an Apron Aprons- You could rock an apron and save hundreds on clothes and instantly have more pockets! Augment your clothing reality with extra padding where you need it and a custom pocket for cookies and other fresh snacks.

5 Ways Coding can be used in the Social Studies Classroom
Coding is a great way to let kids use the knowledge they are studying. The platform lets them do amazing stuff and gives them plenty of points for authentic choice. In Sam’s classroom scratch is one of the secret weapons of engagement and differentiation.
Screencastify
Screencastify is a free Chrome extension that allows teachers to record their computer screens using the Chrome Browser. In addition to it being one of the best and simplest screencast applications for Chromebooks, it’s also one of the best ways for a teacher or student to record themselves using the front-facing camera.

10 Ways to use @OneNoteEDU to keep you organized

How can OneNote be used to meet your needs?

Event PlanningPlan an event (like a conference, party or carnival) with OneNote by having a section to brainstorm by hand, create a table of deliverable items, create daily tasks lists, link to Excel documents with more detail contact lists, create rough drafts of emails, store PDF contracts, save links to share, and take screenshots of research inspiration (photos, website design, flyer design).
Make team meetings dynamicWhile teams are meeting, make notes that are meaningful and useful. Add documents, insert links, tag people for “to do” items, and link notes to Outlook meetings.
Travel Light with OneNoteKeep all your travel arrangements in OneNote (airline, hotel, rental car), print important emails & flyers with information about where you are going into OneNote, and use Office Lens to insert PDFs of your receipts (if you are lucky enough to be reimbursed). Any presentations you are sharing (PPT, Sway or other) can also be stored on OneNote, just in case! Then use OneNote on your smartphone when you travel to stay super organized and travel light

Rob Dickson

Rob Dickson presently serves as the Executive Director of Information Management Systems with Omaha Public Schools, directing the instructional technology program and all technology infrastructure work for the district. In his current role, Dickson has introduced innovative initiatives to increase capacities in professional development; among these initiatives is a partnership with Microsoft that has resulted in 200 Microsoft Innovative Educators as well as Instructional Technology Leadership cohorts led by his team. Dickson’s practical understanding of how technology should support student learning, his willingness to listen to and emphasize with teachers in the classroom and ability to communicate vision to key players in the district has brought success to the districts he has served. Dickson also works to consult numerous Districts with their strategic technology vision and implementation. Noteworthy accomplishments include his previous District ranking among the “Top Ten” Digital Districts in the nation four years consecutively, leading the first VBlock cloud data center installation in K-12 education and starting the first virtual school in Nebraska history. Dickson was named 2014’s “20 to Watch” from NSBA for innovation and technology integration work, was recently recognized as one of the 2016 Top 30 Technologists, Transformers, and Trailblazers by the Center for Digital Education, as well as 2017 Administrator PLN Award for Exemplary Leadership from the International Society for Technology in Education.

How can New Google Slides features be used in your school?

This past week, Google Slides released some pretty amazing updates that are certainly going to be helpful for both teachers and tech coaches. On this episode of the TechEducator Podcast, we take a look at these new features and how they can be used in your classroom.

How can we use the following new features?

Grid View

Grid view allows users to see all of your slides in a multi-row, multi-column grid. This feature revolves nicely around another new feature where you can now mute slides so they don't appear in your final presentation. Let's face it, when your slides are on the left side of the screen, you only see a handful at a time. With your slides in a grid, you can quickly see more of them to rearrange and edit quicker.

Linking Slides

Many of us teach a class or subject that is also taught by another set of teachers. Or, perhaps a school leader is creating slides for a parent presentation and they want their school building leaders to embed that presentation on to THEIR slide decks. With a new slide-linking feature, users can create a set of slides and copy/paste them into another slide deck. When you hit the paste button, the new deck will give you an option to copy as is, or link the slides. When slides are linked, they act as one single slide. If you adjust one slide, the other deck gets adjusted as well. This is a game changer for anyone doing PD on a topic but uses that same set of slides for multiple presentations.

Timelines, Graphs, Charts

I recently had a horrible experience where a math teacher told me (several times) that Google and Math just do not work well together. This same teacher came up to me recently with a smile on their face and told me that the new ability to add and manipulate charts and graphs on their slides was a total game changer. To add a chart, simply go to the Insert menu and insert one of several beautifully designed templates onto your slide.

Create a video biography about yourself Find 5 five pictures that tell about yourself
Upload the 5 pictures and record why they are special to you.
Have a teacher take pictures and create a video for Back To School nightStart taking pictures of your students from the first day of school
Use the DriveSlides extension to put them into a Google Slideshow
Go to file and publish and loop the slideshow for Back To School Night
Have students videotape parents for back to school night and create a videoHave students be reporters for that night in your school
Have them create a video to highlight the school and what parents learned on Back To School Night.
Do a passion project of what you would like to study the most this year.Brainstorm with students what their passions are
Have them record 30 seconds on why this passion is so special to them.

In her spare time, she enjoys touring the world, meeting new people, learning new languages, and experiencing new cultures. She is also a closet adrenaline junkie who loves the occasional sky or sea dive expedition.

About Crescerance

Crescerance began its journey in 2011 with the simple idea of wanting to make it easier for schools to connect and truly engage with their parents, staff, students, alumni, and community at large. Through working with schools in creating their school apps (so that everyone could be connected through Mobile and have quick, easy access to the information they needed), we met students that had a keen interest in not just using the app that we created for their school, but in wanting to learn about the creation process of that app.

“How did you make our app?” was a question that we got asked through numerous in person or Skype calls from teachers wanting to bring an App Developer perspective to their students. This is where MAD-learn was born. It was born from the curiosity of our students. From their quest to know more and absorb more. From our passion to feed that curiosity.

MAD stands for Mobile App Development and MAD-learn is a program that is teaching students how to be Creators of Technology, instead of just Consumers of it. To learn more about MAD-learn, watch this video: MAD-learn.com

Have the app recognize Green as Gray
Determine what will show in the Grey/Green space.
Use Green Screen for students to present ‘in front’ of their Slide Presentation using Green Screen

Uses in the Classroom

Virtual Fieldtrips (put students on location)
Have students narrate classroom activities
Record classroom activity then has students reflect upon their activity experiences by narrating what happened in the class.

What are they?
Why should educators use Google Hangouts??

So many educators are connecting on Twitter – take it a step further and interact with a Twitter Chat or just jump in with some of the people you interact with regularly on Twitter to have a discussion.

Teachers can share the idea with students to get them using GHO for study groups, practicing speeches and presentations, or collaboratively working on group projects outside of class.

Guidelines for Google Hangout
play with it first, specifically find the control for “lower third” and make a name-bar for yourself with your twitter name and “#PATUE”
During the Hangout EVERYONE WEARS HEADPHONES. This is needed to make sure the audio works right on the recording
Mute your mic when you are not talking. Yes we can hear you typing. (NO MORE! GHO AUTO MUTES WHEN TYPING)
