Wendell Potter worked for large health care corporations CIGNA and HUMANA for 20 years. In a crisis of conscience, he quit. Two events prompted his decision: (1) observing the RAM health care clinic in Wise, VA where uninsured people were literally getting health care in a barn, and (2) the death of a 17-year-old girl who was denied coverage for a liver transplant. Since his resignation, he has been a strong and constant voice for finding a better way to provide health care in our country.

Dr. Robin Feierabend has diagnosed our health system in the U.S. as "failing." His conclusion is based on more than 30 years as a teaching physician and Professor Emeritus in Medicine at East Tennessee State University.

He and some high profile fellow professionals are trying to address the issue in an event to which the public is invited.

The prestigious panel includes a keynote address by Wendell Berry, author of four books on healthcare and a former insurance executive turned whistleblower. He is now president of the Center for Health and Democracy.

The event is set for Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education, 300 West Market Street, Kingsport, TN. It is free and open to the public.

VENEZUELA. Is the U.S. in control and what do Venezuelans think?

In fall 2025, the U.S. began bombing boats from Venezuela and other countries, killing 130 people and claiming that they were narco terrorists and a threat to U.S. national security, which justified military action. On Jan. 3, 2026, the United States invaded Venezuela, arrested and imprisoned its president, and now says that the U.S. is now in charge of the oil industry in Venezuela.

What is the reaction of the Venezuelan people? Dr. Oleski Miranda Navarro, Chair of Hispanic Studies at Emory & Henry University, grew up in Venezuela and is now a dual citizen of both Venezuela and the United States and continues research in Latin America. Navarro was in Venezuela just a few weeks before the capture of the country's president and shares varying viewpoints of Venezuelans about these actions. He talks about his upbringing in the oil fields and the international significance of oil in this new relationship with the U.S.

SAVED BY CONGRESS - THE JOB CORPS

After a number of campuses in the national Job Corps program were told they were being shut down by the Labor Dept and the results of Elon Musk's DOGE investigation, supporters filed injunctions and court cases have dragged on from summer 2025 until Congress stepped in. Legislators superseded temporary injunctions that were keeping Job Corps programs running and funded the program through June 2027.

Marion, Virginia's campus Admission Manager Heather Goodpasture ignored warnings not to talk about the issues, but she did. Along with other defenders, they made the case for the value of the program.

In this episode, Goodpasture reviews the complicated and devastating steps in reviving the program for now and also describes basic needs for bringing the program back to its full measure from before the shut down.

Meet Bo. He's a recovering drug addict who has seen it all: things you can imagine and things you wouldn't have thought of.

He started young...with alcohol. After that addiction kicked in, he found his way to cocaine, meth, jail repeated attempts in rehab, and prison. Finally, his rehab stuck and he has been clean for one year. What are the tools he believes will keep him straight?

This interview kicks off a three-part series to be followed by a conversation with a woman who lived in a world of drug addiction before she became clean. Finally, we will talk with a representative of the Washington County, Virginia Recovery Court, formerly known as Drug Court where people facing pending felony drug charges can avoid jail buy successfully completing the Recovery Program.

Odeliya Matter grew up within yards of her Palestinian neighbors. She didn't ever meet any of them, but she learned about the Palestinians in school, at home, and in the community. She was told that they were dangerous and they wanted to kill Jews.

Then Odelyia met a Palestinian man while doing volunteer work with refugees in Lesbos, Greece. She found great commonality with his story and the story of her relatives who had to flee the persecution of Jews.

CINDY GREEN-- CANDIDATE FOR VA HOUSE OF DELEGATES on Nov 4

Democrat Cindy Green is running for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in the Nov. 4 election. She is challenging Republican Delegate Israel O'Quinn who has held the seat since 2011.

Topics include campaign financing, issues related to potential cuts to Medicaid, Virginia's Clean Energy Requirement Act that requires 100% clean energy in the state by 2050, Green's view on proposed Virginia Constitutional Amendments that (1) guarantees access to abortion and (2) overturns a previous Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage.

Unfortunately, her opponent's campaign reported that Del. O'Quinn was unable to find 30 minutes during the month of October to answer questions on this program.

He spoke to This Conversation in March of 2024 when he was proposing a bill that would allow utilities to raise rates on consumers to pay for the proposed development of a small modular nuclear reactor in Southwest Virginia. IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE -- OR CAN IT?

A special group of actors is presenting a one-time reading of the 1937 play "It Can't Happen Here" at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon on Saturday, September 13 at 6:00. The play developed from Sinclair Lewis's 1935 book of the same name, is described as a cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy and potential for fascism.

The book describes a president who develops a military that arrests political enemies, targets the press and education, and relies on a Congress that defers to strong executive authority. The president's dictatorship offers a promise to save the country from immorality, crime, and dangers from various groups, including those who refuse to pledge allegiance to the flag and the New Testament.

According to reviewers both in 1935 and now, the message remains fresh.

Director Michael Gerber talks about why this group of actors is presenting this one-time event at this particular time.

I interviewed "Dalton" many years ago. "Dalton" was a name we used to disguise his real identity. He had been one of my students as a female and was undergoing a gender reassignment to be a male when we talked.

Being transgender has become a topic that is currently a political lightning bolt with fierce, conflicting opinions.

David and Jill Dalton live in the William King House in Abingdon. They've restored it and they're sharing it because of its significant history. In fact, the house now hosts a permanent Virginia Historic marker because William Clark -- of Lewis and Clark fame-- spent the night there. And William King was the richest man in the region at the time he built this first brick house -- WITH running water that came through hollowed out logs.

Hear the story of how the Daltons decided to move to Abingdon to buy and restore the house and to help preserve the importance of Abingdon in the early days of our country.

THOMAS JEFFERSON IS COMING TO TOWN

Through a renowned re-enactor, "Thomas Jefferson" will be making several presentations at the popular Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon July 25 through August 3, 2025. Guest Walter Jenny will describe several events that focus on important historical connections to Southwest Virginia. He'll explain why Thomas Jefferson proclaimed that the Battle of Kings Mountain was the turning point in the Revolutionary War and defeat of British Control. A group of 400 militia men began the march to that battle at the Muster Grounds in Abingdon Virginia.

Walter Jenny will offer more information about the battle in his own presentation on Thursday, July 31 at the Higher Education Center at 7:30 p.m.

Tens of thousands of people visit the festival each year for a variety of events, including music, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, food events, and more.

What's in a name: Anthropocene?

WHY I HELPED ORGANIZE THE PROTEST CALLED "NO KINGS!"

This episode features a member of TAKE ACTION SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, one of the organizers of the NO KINGS protest in Abingdon, Virginia on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Guest Lynn Manweiler works with the local protest group that claims attendance of 700 people in one of the more than 2,000 protests held nationwide on the same day.

We look at the issues causing people to take to the streets, including claims of Presidential overreach in areas of immigration, free speech, and budget cuts that threaten those who have Medicaid health coverage.

Regarding the rights to free speech and the rights to protest, Manweiler talks about people who have been taken from the streets and sent to prison without due process. She talks about a protestor who was shot and killed as part of the nationwide protests in which her event was part. And yet, she persists in being part of the demonstrations and explains her motivations.

UPDATE: HEARING ON JOB CORPS CLOSING SET FOR JUNE 17

Blue Ridge Job Corps Admissions Manager Heather Goodpasture continues to defy instructions to keep quiet and provides updates on Department of Labor orders to shut down the Job Corps. The shut down is under a restraining order, due in part because of the public backlash, and is set for a hearing on June 17 in a federal court. The decision will affect nearly 100 Job Corps programs nationwide.

This interview contains part of a previous interview that details the mission of the program for educating and training at-risk students.

Farah is a Christian who has lived in the West Bank and who has relatives in Gaza who have been killed in the Israeli-Gaza War. His Palestinian parents were displaced from their home in the establishment of Israel after World War II. He shares his view of the war in Gaza as a genocide and describes some of his family's experiences in the Israeli occupation of Palestine. In the midst of the horrors of the war, he finds reasons for hope.

California wildfires in my neighborhood. Ben Davis

Ben Davis, an Emory & Henry graduate, who lives in Santa Monica, California, shares his experience living through the wildfires that burned tens of thousands of acres in January 2025. With evacuation notices for his neighbors four blocks away, Ben and others in his apartment building evacuated as well. When they looked outside, the view was a wall of inferno nearby in the Palisades area.

We hear about families who lost homes, the smoky air, efforts to find a hotel room, and the challenges that make some question whether they should stay in southern California or move away. For Ben Davis, it's not a question. He loves his life on the west coast and doesn't intend to go anywhere. He also revisits his time and study at Emory & Henry, calling the decision to go there the best one of his life. Always good to hear. Thanks, Ben.

FROM AMISH TO APOSTOLIC -- David King

David King converted from Old-Order Amish beliefs to Pentecostal Apostolic beliefs.

His journey began with his birth in an Amish community in Lancaster Pennsylvania. As an adult, he began questioning the religious commitment in his community and eventually moved to Abingdon, Virginia where he is now known as a prominent farmer who sells his goods at the Abingdon Farmers Market.

He describes the joys he found in early farm life without the help of motorized vehicles or other modern conveniences, and describes how his spiritual search led him to become Pentecostal at the expense of being shunned by his family and friends.

Since age 39, David has been driving motorized vehicles and embracing more worldly endeavors, including becoming a consultant for installation of residential solar energy systems.

David provides a fascinating journey of seeking spirituality that is also detailed in a book about his life, entitled Amish to Apostolic by Audrey Feigl.

Eastman Chemical in nearby Kingsport, TN is now operating the world's largest chemical recycling facility.

In the first of a two-part series, we hear from Republican Mark Matney about why he finds Republican values align with his personal beliefs.

He cites small government and low taxes as a top priority and credits former President Donald Trump with improvement in jobs. He sees support for his religious beliefs of anti-abortion and sinfulness of homosexuality and people who seek transgender care.

Matney is owner of Mountain Patriots, a business devoted to a variety of merchandise including Trump memorabilia, personal safety tasers, and switchblades. The store also hosts weekly prayer meetings, and assists with voter registration.

Keys to the Game is celebrating ten years on the air with its focus on the inside view of Emory & Henry football where Gary talks to the coach. With the trust the coaches have for him, he gets the explanations of what happened in the previous game -- and what to expect in the next game.

The show is a gift to those who love football, but it's also an interesting story of a man leading a team of young men for those who may not care so much about the game.

Gary is also the color commentator for the live coverage of the university football games, both home and away. His background as a player and a coach and a long- time associate of the football program gives him the expertise to help everyone understand what's happening on the field. His dedication of time and effort to his passion for Emory & Henry and its football team deserves recognition and celebration on the 10th anniversary of his show, Keys to the Game.

If one in ten American adults is an alcoholic, that means there are lots and lots of friends, family members, spouses and others who love them and live with them and who have resulting struggles of their own.

In this episode, "JANE" talks about the help she gets through Al-Anon, an organization that focuses on relatives of alcoholics. She's also a member of Adult Children of Alcoholics because of the ways children find to adapt to living with alcoholics. These adjustments may influence children long into adulthood.

I'm Eric -- and I'm an alcoholic. First in a four-part series.

This conversation with "Eric" begins a four part series focusing on alcoholism. Many estimates say that one adult in ten of American adults is an alcoholic.

Eric's story is one of a high-functioning alcoholic who operated mostly under the radar until a serious health issue ultimately led him to Alcoholics Anonymous and sobriety.

He learned that alcoholism is a disease. He agreed to this interview in the hopes of broadening understanding of the struggles of alcoholism -- and, perhaps, to help a listener who might recognize the symptoms and get help before hitting rock bottom.

In part 2, "Sally's" story is a stark contrast to Eric's. In Sally's case, she was controlled by the disease from the very first drink and behaved in very dangerous behaviors as a result. Her story about how she decided to get help is powerful and profound, but the struggle continued.

In part 3, we talk with "Jane" whose story is not about being an alcoholic. It's about living with and loving others who are alcoholics and learning ways to cope.

We conclude the four-part series by talking with an expert on addition. We'll talk about the ways in which alcoholism is a disease and what strategies may or may not work with getting sober.

ARREST OF A REPORTER. WHO IS A REPORTER?

Police in Saltville arrested a man for disorderly conduct for trying to sit at a table designated for "Press" at the Saltville Town Council Meeting on July 9, 2024. David Huff said he was a reporter. The police officer did not accept the Press Pass he showed that identified him with a website. Mr. Huff was given approval for a court-appointed attorney at his arraignment date on July 17, 2024. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 4, 2024 in Smyth County District Court in Marion, VA.

This interview explores the question, "Who is a reporter?" The guest is Megan Rhyne, Director of the Virginia Coalition on Open Government.

DEATH OF A SW VIRGINIAN & VP PICK JD VANCE

Odd connections: St. Paul attorney, activist and author Frank Kilgore died on Sunday, July 14. On July 15, former president Donald Trump picked JD Vance as his VP running mate for the Republican ticket in the Presidential race for November 2024.

This show is a rerun of the October 2022 interview with Frank Kilgore about his book JD Vance is a Fake Hillbilly. Kilgore's book was in response to JD Vance's 2016 book Hillbilly Elegy.

Kilgore believed that Vance's book presented unfair stereotypes of people in the coalfields of Appalachia. He didn't like the book -- and made that very clear, both in his book and in this interview.

Since we, unfortunately, could not ask Kilgore to do an interview about Vance's selection as Trump's running mate, this rerun will have to serve.

"Jimmy Allen ’93 has been selected as the next Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Allen returns to his alma mater with 31 years of coaching experience and a career head coaching record of 195-182 in 13 seasons.

A four-year letterwinner for the Wasps between 1989-93 under legendary head coach Bob Johnson, Allen led the Wasps to four-straight NCAA Division III Tournament berths including a Sweet 16 appearance as a senior. He was inducted into the Emory & Henry Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Allen received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in accounting from E&H in 1993.

Allen joins the E&H staff after spending the 2023-24 season as the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of New Hampshire alongside head coach Nathan Davis who was part of Johnson’s staff at Emory & Henry in 1997-98.

Before his time in Durham, N.H., Allen was the head coach for Army West Point for seven seasons. In Allen’s last four seasons, he guided Army to a 59-57 overall record and a 36-32 Patriot League record, which signified the first four-year class to graduate with a winning league record since Army joined the Patriot League in 1979. The Black Knights won 17 games in Allen’s final season at Army – the second most wins since 1978. "

ISRAEL-GAZA -- Muslim & Virginia Delegate Sam Rasoul

Delegate Sam Rasoul has family roots in the West Bank and shares his view that Israel is breaking international law and conducting a genocide in Gaza. He insists that the conflict is not one of religion and describes the long history of Christians, Jews, and Muslims living peacefully together until post World War II when Israel was formed and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were run off their land. He points to representations of Jews and Christians in current U.S. protests of Israel's war offensive that has resulted in the death of tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza.

Mr. Rasoul is one of two Muslims in Virginia Legislature.

VOICE OF CIVIL RIGHTS PROTEST -- BETTIE MAE FIKES

In this interview, aired on Apr. 10, 2024, Bettie Mae Fikes, known as "The Voice of Selma," tells her story of the Civil Rights struggle she lived in the 1960s. As a young girl, she sang in marches for the right to vote, the right to ride a bus, and the right to basic freedoms. She remained non-violent in the face of horrible cruelty, simply because her skin was black. She was jailed and kept in jail when she refused to say "Yes, sir" to the judge.

Bettie Mae was a strong young girl and resisted the inequality she was confronted with, but the lingering pain of her experience is evident in this interview. Yet she doesn't turn back and continues her march to college campuses to make sure that the younger generations know the struggle for simple things they may take for granted.

The conversation took place by phone shortly after she visited Emory & Henry College in April 2024. You will hear her break into song as she has always done.

Bettie Mae Fikes is perhaps the most notable historical figure to have been a guest on This Conversation. It was an honor to talk with her, and if you share this podcast, you'll be helping ensure that we don't forget the struggle that Black Americans had -- and continue to have -- for equality.

IN TRIBUTE and IN MEMORY of Dr. T. Edward Damer

Dr. Ed Damer, Professor of Philosophy at Emory & Henry College for 45 years, died on March 21, 2024.

This tribute presents a look at Ed through the eyes of several close colleagues and his weekly lunch group. Special attention is given to Ed's focus on logic, his love of fun conversation, and his service to the Abingdon Rotary club where he directed the annual Frolics performance.

Ed leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Nancy Jean Bradford, four children and six grandchildren.

This program originally aired on April 3, 2024, at which time a celebration of Ed's life was scheduled for May 18 at 2:00 at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts on the Emory & Henry campus.

Tributes to Ed are available through his named Rotary Scholarship at Emory & Henry.

At the time of the interview, his bill regarding SMNRs was still in committee but later passed. With approval from both House and Senate, the bill was awaiting the Governor's signature at the time of the broadcast of this interview.

Emory & Henry graduate Kevin Saxton will be getting a Superbowl ring as a team member of the Kansas City Chiefs following their 25-22 Superbowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas on Feb. 11, 2024.

After stints as an assistant coach for a North Carolina high school coach and for Benedict College in South Carolina, he won a Bill Wash minority fellowship and was assigned to the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Andy Reid hired him as an offensive assistant coach.

Saxton played quarterback from 2014 - 2017 at Emory & Henry College where he set a school record with 8,536 passing yards and notched 69 touchdown passes. After graduation, he joined the team's coaching staff.

Nuclear energy -- along with nuclear waste may be coming to Wise County in Southwest Virginia.

Volunteer with SW Virginia Nuclear Watch Coalition Rees Shearer presents objections to the idea.

Plans are underway for a Small Modular Nuclear Reactor on a 65,000 acre site in Wise County. Utility companies Dominion Power and American Electric Power/Appalachian Power want to build the reactors in conjunction with large data center -- and are asking the Virginia Legislature to allow them to start charging existing customers now for the cost of investing and building the sites.

William Isom produces a series of programs focused on being Black in Appalachia.

This interview precedes 2024 celebrations of Martin Luther King Day and airs in advance of Mr. Isom's presentation in Abingdon about some of the history and contraditions in views toward Blacks in the area. For example, support for abolition of slavery was often expressed by slave owners. The SW Virginia area has high numbers of lynchings and some localities are beginning to memorialize the achievements and landmarks of Blacks and also memorializing some of the injustices.

MY EXPERIENCE IN GAZA with Rev. Boyd Evans

Rev. Boyd Evans of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon, Va. reflects on his own experience in Occupied Gaza in the light of the current Israel -Gaza war that began on October 7, 2023 with an attack on Israel by Hamas operatives.

The conversation includes an intro to historical background to the establishment of Israel and the ongoing violence and tensions between Israel and the occupied West Bank. Later in the discussion, Evans talks about his connection to the Ahli Anglican Hospital in Gaza. Shortly after our conversation on Dec. 18th, he learned that the Israeli army had, on the same day, destroyed the hosital front entrance and detained most of the staff. Two junior doctors, four nurses and two janitors were left to tend more than 100 seriously wounded patients -- all without running water or electricity.

A tank, parked on the rubble of the hospital entry wall, blocked anyone from entering or leaving.

At the end of the interview, Rev. Evans answers a question about how Christians can maintain faith in an all powerful God who sends his son as a prince of peace -- and yet allows the horrors of this war to leave tens of thousands dead, including thousands of innocent children, with no end in sight for the massive bombing, death, and destruction.

He talks about coming to the acceptance of being truly included in a place he wouldn't have envisioned belonging.

As a college student, Matt Shannon found an interest in the Middle East and gradually narrowed his attention to the connections between Iran and the U.S. Dr. Shannon is now a professor of history, preparing for the release of his second book, Mission Manifest , a look at the experience of U.S. evangelicals and missionaries in Iran. The country continues to play a significant role in U.S. international relations with the backdrop of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the taking and holding of American hostages for 444 days. Occasional and ongoing uprisings in the Muslim state continue, most recently after the country's morality police arrested a woman for not wearing her hijab properly. She died in custody. The slogan that protesters chant in her memory: Women. Life. Freedom. The title of Shannon's first book captures the emotional essence of the relationship between the two countries: Losing Hearts & Minds: American-Iranian Relations, 2017. That book, examined earlier close educational ties between the two countries. In this interview, we see how the overall history and culture of Iran captured Dr. Shannon's own heart and mind and has led his research in a successful academic career.

James Gibbs has worked in mining for 40 years and knows a thing or two about mine worker issues. IN fact, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine invited Gibbs to be his guest at President Biden's 2023 State of the Union address. Gibbs used the opportunity to plead his case for continued support in protections for miners -- and for assistance in good paying jobs with benefits for replacing lost mining jobs. Gibbs has plenty to say about politics and how miners have been treated by everyone from major political parties and coal companies to specific lawmakers.

Ban on abortion affects Bristol in both Virginia and Tennessee

The Greensboro Four -- Lunch counter sit ins.

In this interview, Jones previews his presentation in recognition of Martin Luther King Day at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Jan. 13, 2022. He talks about his education in segregated schools, reasons for his choice of a college, and his 50 year career as a teacher. It's not an every day occurrence that you hear from someone who had to make travel plans, including finding a restaurant where you could be served. This interview is a reminder of the irrational days of segregation in our recent past.

New voting maps in Virginia

In November, 2020, Virginia voters approved a Constitutional Amendment establishing a bi-partisan commission to fix the problem of gerrymandering and take redistricting power away from the legislature. When the new commission was unable to agree on a map, the Virginia Supreme Court took over, as specified in the amendment.

New voting maps are now in place.

How have things changed? Is the new system a success?

League of Women Voters members Peggy Layne and Chris DeRosa were deeply involved in the process of change and provide great insight into the new plan.

They suspended teacher Matthew Hawn for sharing a profane poem about white privilege on video by Black poet Kyla Jenée Lacey in a high school class on "Contemporary Issues."
