One example is the intersection of Park Avenue and 57th St… where it used to take three light cycles before vehicles could get through the intersection. Now, the delays have disappeared. In California, unprecedented wildfires in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties have burned roughly 40 thousand acres, forcing evacuations of hundreds of thousands of people, and destroying more than 12,000 homes and businesses. To help with evacuation efforts, LA METRO suspended bus and train fares, and provided the Los Angeles Police Department with buses to safely evacuate residents in the Hollywood Hills. King County Metro in the Seattle area started a pilot project, installing cameras with artificial intelligence on buses to watch for drivers in transit only lanes. At this time, they are only gathering data, so no tickets will be issued to violators.

The new $9 toll for the most gridlocked part of Manhattan will go into effect on January 5th. After six years of hard work, the new Gordie Howe International Bridge has been connected in the middle over the Detroit River. For over 100 years, traffic lights have used red, yellow, and green signals. But now researchers want to introduce a fourth color, white, for the arrival of autonomous vehicles. Keolis North America released a study sharing the top priorities of transit executives, with 78 percent saying decarbonization is their focus for the next five years.

Since the Chicago Transit Authority launched a new chatbot, riders have issued over 8,000 chats, which has helped CTA respond quickly to issues like malfunctioning air conditioning units.

Over the weekend, Saline County Area Transit in Nebraska commemorated National Ice Cream Day by handing out free pie and ice cream to the public.

And on the streets of Boston, you might see trains looking back at you. After a tongue in cheek community protest led by Ariel Locke and John Sanchez, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority agreed to put googly eyes on five of its trains. The goal is to bring joy to riders.

Amtrak broke ground on the S Line that will connect Raleigh, North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia. This route will save travelers 90 minutes per trip while more efficiently connecting the South to Washington, D.C. and the Northeast Corridor.

Windsor, Ontario received its largest federal investment of 117 million to upgrade its transit system.

And if you love music, the Chicago Transit Authority is kicking off another season of entertaining commuters with live music from local DJs at the 95th Red Line train station.

Anaheim Transportation Network opened a new electric bus charging facility. As one of the first all-electric bus fleets in California, the new facility will manage the charging of over 80 electric buses.

Las Vegas is starting a pilot program to use artificial intelligence to reduce pedestrian related crashes. The program will be implemented in the busy Fremont Street corridor. With a fiscal cliff coming for many transit agencies who are nearing the end of COVID relief subsidies, farebox revenue is becoming increasingly important and now there are efforts to step up fare enforcement.

Last year, the Toronto Transit Commission lost nearly $124 million dollars to fare evasion. Today, the TTC is rolling out a new campaign to remind riders about the importance of paying fares.

Washington DC Metro Transit Police have additional support when dealing with fare evasion, thanks to a new District of Columbia law. Violators could face up to $100 fines.

And the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is celebrating transit driver appreciation month by featuring operator stories on YouTube and collecting thank you notes for riders’ favorite bus drivers and rail operators.

A one-year multi-modal pilot is underway in Vancouver, BC. The RideLink smartphone app integrates rides between TransLink, car-share, and bike-share by providing trip planning and booking services. Source: TransLink

And the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority’s (TARTA) Paratransit Division has become the first transit agency department in Ohio to become a Certified Autism Center. The Smart Streets program plans to go into pilot mode this summer, where cameras will enforce parking violations. Last week, the American Public Transportation Association participated in the White House Roundtable for Clean Bus Manufacturing. APTA's task force presented suggestions to create a more competitive and stable domestic bus manufacturing industry.

And in related news, the U. S. Federal Transit Administration announced 1. 5 billion in grants to support American transit vehicle manufacturing. This is the third bus grant package since the bipartisan infrastructure law was signed. The application period is now open.

The 14-story building in Alexandria, Virginia will serve over 1,400 employees and act as a technology hub, housing the data center, cybersecurity operations, bus and rail video teams, communication, and administrative support. Privately owned high speed rail operator Brightline debuted its expanded

service linking downtown Miami to the Orlando International Airport. Many see

this as the beginning of a new era for passenger rail, creating a blueprint to

travel with ease between two nearby cities which are too far apart to drive,

but too close to travel by air. The trip between Miami and Orlando is 235

miles, and Brightline's new rail service takes up to three and a half hours

depending on stops. Brightline's next rail project is to connect Los Angeles

with Las Vegas through all electric trains. They are expected to break ground

With the help of public input, this newly designed bus network aims to make bus service more accessible by increasing frequency of buses, enhancing connections, and improving evening and weekend services.
