She had a high-level security system around her home and even with this, there was no footage of her leaving. It took nearly a decade, a tenacious brother and a "Colombo" style cop to figure out what had happened.

Which then led to another crime that happened nearly 30 years earlier all perpetrated by one man; Jose Rodriguez-Cruz.

It was almost midnight—December 6th, 1991—when an Austin patrol officer noticed smoke rising over a strip mall in Austin, TX. It was later discovered to be the "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" shop and upon entering...not gonna lie, one of the most haunting crime scenes I've ever read about.

Four teenage girls—Eliza Thomas, Jennifer Harbison, her younger sister Sarah, and Sarah’s best friend, Amy Ayers—were found in a condition that makes your stomach turn. Two of them were working that night. The other two were just there for a sleepover. It was supposed to be a normal Friday.

We walk through the case from the start of the fire to the long, long, messy road that followed.

Let me be clear: this case was botched. Public pressure was making the police department look bad so they forced confessions out of teenage boys with zero forensic ties to the scene. Everything that could go wrong, did. And while those wrongful convictions unraveled years later, the real suspect (or suspects) were still walking around free - and committing more crimes.

Decades later, new DNA tech finally pointed to a name: Robert Eugene Brashers. A serial predator. Dead by his own hand since 1999. But the evidence? His DNA was on one of the victims. His gun matched a shell casing at the scene.

So why the hell did it take 34 years to get there?

Deputy Dan Kucharski is still on the stand and this time he's under cross-examination. He actually says that it's possible that the RAV4 key could have been planted.

How he never saw the key before Lt. Lenk "found" it even though it was right in Kucharski's eyesight.

Then, we learn that a bag containing evidence has his name on it but it's not his handwriting. Who bagged the evidence? Why did they sign his name? Is Kucharski being set up?

We continue with the direct examination of Dan Kucharski.

Kucharski tells us about the search inside Avery's garage, and especially the .22 caliber shell casings. He also talks about how they put some evidence tags over spots that "appeared" to be blood. He and the group of Manitowoc officers he was supposed to be in charge of, goes into Avery's home to collect two rifles and ammunition that appears to match the same kind that was found on the floor of the garage.

Then it comes to the discovery of the key. The key to Teresa Halbach's vehicle. He said that Lenk pointed it out from the doorway where it was near Colborn. He admits that it was possible that the key could have been planted without him noticing.

WHAT?

That single line "I guess it is possible" says so much.

And then he mentions aliens, so there's that.

It's the end of Day 8 of the trial and Deputy Kucharski takes the stand. Because it's the end of the day, the prosecution doesn't have a lot of time to start questioning him but they do what they can.

We learn how he went through Steven Avery's garage the first day and how several shell casings were scattered on the floor. He tells us about how each of them were documented and then describes working alongside Lt. Lenk, Sgt. Colborn, and Detective Remiker as part of the evidence collection team.

Kucharski is from Calumet county, the ones who are supposed to be taking the lead yet Lenk, Colborn and Remiker are all part of Manitowoc county; the county that was supposed to be taking a step back.

Lt. Lenk wraps up his testimony and under the defense's questioning, some things don't quite add up.

He gets called to a homicide investigation...but then stops at a fast food restaurant first?

During his deposition, he said he got to the Avery salvage yard around 6:30 to 7:00 PM but in trial, he said it was around 2:00 PM.

During the deposition, he said he volunteered to search Avery's property but during the trial he said he was just "asked to assist".

Put all of this together, and the credibility of the man who “found” the key is left hanging by a thread.

When the key to Teresa's RAV4 was located, it was after multiple searches had already been done inside Steven Avery's home. The discovery of it was...well...sketchy. In this episode, we'll hear how it was found straight from Colborn himself.

He was right near the bookcase, he said he was shaking the bookcase, and never saw the key until Lt. Lenk pointed it out. Sitting there in plain view.

Colborn also admits he felt pressure from Avery's lawsuit, you know that $36 million dollar one? Because he knew he could be named, personally. Which means he very well may be personally liable.

Another odd thing...Lenk and Colborn always did the searches of Avery's trailer together. Why?

This is where reasonable doubt starts to look like something more.

In this episode, we wrap up the testimony of Sgt. William Tyson, the officer from Calumet county whose job it was to watch the Manitowoc officers while they searched Steven Avery's home.

The prosecution made a big deal about this bleach bottle in the bathroom but conveniently failed to mention that this is also where Steven's washer and dryer were located. They also made it wound as if Teresa's number in a notebook found in Steven's house was a piece of evidence even though two different colored inks were used. And then there's the hood latch swab which didn't happen until 5 months after the crime lab had the RAV4 in their possession.

Why?

Piece by piece, it feels less like they were uncovering the truth, and more like they were making sure Steven Avery was their guy.

The jury learns about notebooks, phone numbers, a for-sale sign, and even a bleach bottle — framing them as incriminating evidence against Steven Avery. But are these items really proof of anything, or just everyday household objects twisted to fit a narrative?

In this episode, we continue with John Ertl's testimony as the defense continues to question him. We learn about the handling of the contents of the burn pit outside of Avery's residence, the garaage, and whether or not the evidence was collected and documented properly.

Ertl talks about how the contents of the burn pit was collected and sifted. Not only that, faint luminol reactions in the garage that turned out to be...not blood.

Bottom line is, the crime lab team wasn't allowed to process the scene the way they were trained to do because others stepped in.

Today, we hear from the state’s DNA expert, John Ertl. He walks the jury through his role in collecting and documenting key evidence: from Teresa Halbach’s RAV4, to suspicious stains in Steven’s garage, to burn barrels, a golf cart (another distraction?) and even the car crusher that has become weirdly infamous.

But here’s the issue it was Ertl's team, the field response team who was called in to do the professional processing. Yet, when they got to Avery's garage, it had already been done. Not by them. By who then?

Why did investigators raise the car crusher ramp only to be told by Fassbender, “we don’t need that anymore”? Did the field response team really have to investigate there or was it a distraction because at the same time, Teresa's RAV4 was being moved into the trailer.

By the way, it was an enclosed trailer. Who was in the trailer with the car? Do we even know?

This is the first of a couple Episodes where Ertl is on the stand. This is Part 1 - the prosecution questions him. In the next episode, the defense gets a stab at him.

Today, we hear from Special Agent Tom Fassbender. co-lead investigator in the case against Steven Avery.

From the time that officials begin showing up, including at first, Manitowoc county, we learn about all the early and what feels like a very chaotic scene in the early searches.

Here, we learn about what agencies were involved, how the searches were conducted (at first) of the property, the buildings, and vehicles. He flat out says that the first person they look at is the last person to see the victim alive...and yet...this WASN'T Steven Avery.

And then there's the burn barrels.

Fassbender's testimony is very long and this episode is all the prosecution's questions...and then they broke for lunch. The prosecution isn't even done yet. We'll hear more in Part 2.

He claims the vehicle was never disturbed. That scene security was airtight. And that, oh yeah, he wasn’t aware if his own colleagues had been deposed in Steven Avery’s $36 million lawsuit against the department. Sure, Jan.

O’Connor testifies that he arrived quickly—but didn’t verify the VIN. Orth spoke to Pam Sturm after her “search”—but he didn’t check the VIN either. Both officers kept their distance, claimed to avoid touching the vehicle, and deferred entirely to Pam’s call to dispatch.

Meanwhile, Pam Sturm had testified she walked right up to the RAV4, read most of the 17-digit VIN through the windshield, and reported it. So... why didn’t trained law enforcement confirm it? Why were they so hands-off when the most crucial evidence had just been found?

We learn how Bowe had set up a search system and how the property was locked down. Not to mention, we hear that Manitowoc County officers, James Lenk and Andrew Colborn - who had BOTH testified in Avery's civil lawsuit, were ALSO involved in this investigation even though it was supposed to be handed over to a different county. Why were people who had a direct stake in the outcome of Steven's legal lawsuit, also involved in a case where he was being looked at for murder? Sounds a little more than fishy.

After Bobby Dassey claimed he overheard Steven Avery confess to murder, the courtroom went into damage control. The jury was dismissed, and the afternoon turned into a battle over whether or not Bobby would take the stand so the defense could get a crack at him. The defense needed more time...they had never interviewed Bobby themselves. (Seems weird right?) They didn't know that he was going to say what he was going to say.

This is a long one folks. In this episode we hear from Bobby Dassey. Bobby is Brendan Dassey's brother (you know, the one who is also in jail), and he drops a bombshell that catches the defense completely off-guard. The prosecution barely...and I mean barely...escaped from having a mistrial called because of their underhanded little tactic. 

Timelines don't add up, witness statements from witnesses that aren't on the list are called into question, and the prosecution does a fabulous job of boring the jury to death by showing them multiple photos of Steven Avery's trailer (but it's from multiple angles...as if that makes a difference), shows tires, the car crusher, the 4,000 vehicles on the Avery property and...wait for it...golf carts! Yes, I said golf carts. 

There's a lot of courtroom drama in this one and that's why this portion is ONLY the prosecution questioning Bobby. The defense gets their turn in the next episode.
