Help I can't get my words out!

Why Podcasts are great for awareness building

I'm putting that to the test this month by working with a client to produce 30 podcasts - one for every day of November to raise awareness of Pancreatic Cancer for Pancreatic Cancer awareness month.

Putting On An Online Live Podcast Recording

I’ve been looking back over some of the recent episodes of this podcast and I’ve noticed a thing that I do. A lot.

I say “ohh that’s a good idea” about something I’ve come up with and then go on to say “I might try that myself”.

Dealing With A Lack Of Podcast Motivation In The Summer

Where Are Your Listeners And Why Should You Care?

Fun fact. May has been National Walking Month, it’s a shame nobody told the weather that little snippet. Although as my dad always says “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices.” I disagree.

And that’s made me think about the podcasts I listen to while walking, which then got me thinking about the different places I listen to podcasts and which podcasts I listen to at different times of the week.

But why does this matter?

Because if you know or at least have an idea of where your listener is and what they are doing at the time they are listening to you then that gives you a real advantage over others who don’t know or haven’t considered that.

The joy of podcasts is they are mobile, on demand and don’t need your attention on a screen. That means you can listen to podcasts in lots of different places.

According to recent data from OFCOM podcast listening is popular when people are walking, doing housework, in the car or on public transport, at home relaxing as well as just before bed. They also help people get through other exercise too.

Please don’t think these are the only places people listen to podcasts but this is a useful indication of what people might be getting up to when they are listening to you.

It’s up to you to do a bit of your own market research to understand where you’re listeners are listening but I can (and will) help you understand some of the battles you might be facing for each of the places they are listening.

Five Ways To Grow Your Podcast

My, soon to be reclaimed by nature, back garden is the inspiration for this episode. More specifically the lawn, although calling it a lawn is a stretch, it’s more like a wildflower field.

But it caught my eye just how much the wildflowers (or weeds if you must) have grown along with the grass this past few weeks. The biggest clue was when the cat got lost in the wilderness.

But the conditions for growth in the back garden have been spectacular - rain and not too cold = an explosion of growth.

And that got me thinking about how you can help your podcast grow. The good news is it doesn’t involve rain.

It breaks my heart when people tell me they want to start a podcast, but they won't because they don't like the sound of their voice.

Hearing your voice played back to you can be quite a shock because it often sounds nothing like the voice we hear in our head.

There's science for this.

Nic is a voice coach and voice actor, Kate coaches presenters to present better.

Get Over Podcast Imposter Syndrome

What do Tom Hanks, Michelle Obama, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Agatha Christie and the CEO of Starbucks Howard Schultz all have in common with me (and probably you)?

Well, only Kate Winslet grew up in the same county as me so that's not it. Jodie Foster and I share a surname but that's not it either.

Of course it's experiencing Imposter Syndrome at least once in our lives. And we're in even more good company because according to the International Journal of Behavioral Science, 70 percent of people go through those feelings.

So in this episode I'm talking about imposter syndrome in the podcasting world.

Two Million Podcasts On Apple Podcasts! Where Do You Fit In?

It's been revealed by Podcast Industry Insights courtesy of Daniel J. Lewis that we've now tipped over the 2 million mark for the number of podcasts available in Apple Podcasts.

Now, I'll be honest 2 million podcasts doesn't really sound all that impressive compared with YouTube's 37 million channels.

BUT this time last year I was getting excited because we'd just reached a million.

Yes. The number of podcasts has doubled in a year. And not just any year a year of lockdowns, toilet roll shortages and Zoom everything.

Where do you fit in to all this?

If you've not got a podcast you might be wondering if you've left it too late to start. Numbers are doubling year on year, bigger and bigger players are entering the field and so many more podcast production companies are springing up left right and centre. It's the cool thing to be audio - just look at Clubhouse! Or rather, just listen to Clubhouse.

Some of these thoughts may well be going through your head

The world and it's wife has a podcast so what's the point in you having one...

Podcasting is for the likes of the big boys and girls, the big studios, the professionals so how will I make a difference?

How will I even get heard in such a fast moving market?

Heck even if you've got a podcast and it's active I bet some of those thoughts have crossed your mind.

And hearing that podcasts are growing and attracting so many people is either exciting you or leaving you feeling a bit scared about you and your podcast.

Podcasting Lessons Learned In The Pandemic

On March 23rd it will be a year since the UK was put in to a national lockdown.

I wanted to reflect on the podcasting lessons I've learned over the last 12 months.

1) Having a podcast helped keep me focussed and possibly saved my business

2) Having a plan to change is far better than not having a plan to change

3) I don't need a podcast studio and neither do you

4) Zoom will do

5) Human relationships are important and the podcasts I listened to are now my "friends"

6) A commute is useful for podcast listening but not essential

How Often Should I Publish My Podcast?

This time last year it began to change to "how long should my podcast be?" and now over the last couple of months I find my most asked question is "how often should I publish my podcast?"

Why You Should Plan Your Podcast Like It Belongs On Netflix

Planning your podcast is absolutely vital if you want it to succeed. Of course you've got to understand what success looks like for your podcast first. But we covered that in last week's episode so if you haven't listened to it you might want to go back and catch up.

Of course I'm going to talk about my podcast planning tool kit at this point. But it is how I plan my podcasts. The tool kit is my place to get down all my thoughts, and the processes I use to make sure nothing is missed out when it comes to planning my podcast and the episodes.

It's a tool to understand your podcast and plan your episodes so you can get the best from it. It's not just a pdf you also get a masterclass from me. Here's my planning method - I'll be honest there's a lot of ground work I ask you to do so if you want to just dive in and start recording your podcast you might think you can skip this. But the ground work is so important. You wouldn't build a house without decent foundations - what would Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs say about that? (Yes I've been watching the telly again this week!) So why would you start a podcast without solid foundations? The effort you put in now will be rewarded.

Build Your Foundations

Last week I told you the 5 questions you want to ask and indeed answer before you start your podcast. There's loads on why those questions are important in that episode so rather than go through them all again I'll just sum up what they are

Why are you doing a podcast
Who is your podcast for
What does success look like for you
How much time do you have to commit to your podcast
How much money do you have to commit to your podcast

The first three are the ones you need to bring in to your building foundations stage of planning. Your why, your who and your definition of success for your podcast. These are all very personal questions and what is the right answer for you might be the wrong answer for somebody else. I work with people who use podcasts as an "in" to reach people they want to connect with, I work with clients who use their podcast to build their email list and equally I work with clients who just want to spread the message of their charity. As long as you understand why you are doing your podcast and who the podcast is talking to you will be on the way to success.

We're not moving from the foundation stage just yet because there's a few other things you can do before you've even picked up your microphone.

Have a think about the format of your podcast. Will it just be you? Will you have a co-host? Will you have guests? And while you're thinking about that I want you to think about why you've made that decision and what it means for your podcast and your podcast audience. You want to be adding value. How will you do that on your own, with a co-host or with a guest? The answer will depend on your why, your who and your success definition.

And finally you want to be thinking about your publishing schedule. How often do you want to publish your podcast episodes? Will you do it in a series or season if you must, or will it be ongoing with no breaks? How will you deal with holidays if you're doing an ongoing podcast? (we will go on holidays again. I promise.) If you're doing a series will you still release them weekly or do a series drop so people can binge all in one go. In the same way I binge everything on Netflix. S-Town from the same people who brought us Serial and This American Life did the whole series drop. I think it's an interesting way of doing it. And a great way to get yourself in the charts - if people are devouring your content in one go then you'll get a lot of listens over a short amount of time.

These are your foundations. And also where the building analogy ends because I don't know the process of building anything more than you want a foundation, some walls and a roof and windows. I'll stick to the podcast stuff.

Create a Podcast Brief

This might feel like an unnecessary step but after doing all the work in the foundation stage it makes sense to pull it all together in to a document and have it to hand. I constantly refer back to my podcast brief to make sure I'm on track with my podcast planning, when I do my 90 day review and also I would use it as a base for my media kit if I was asking guests to come on.

You don't have to publish your podcast brief anywhere but it's a great resource to have to hand.

I recommend your podcast brief covers these areas. None of your answers need to be an essay. In most cases two or three sentences is more than enough.

Your mission statement - in a couple of sentences sum up what your podcast is about and how it does what you say it's going to do. It's an executive summary. My mission statement for this podcast is "Turn Up The Volume On Your Voice is a podcast about podcasting. It offers guidance, advice and resources to help people start and keep on podcasting. It is a friendly listen.

Host or hosts - I love this bit because I like to talk about myself in the third person. Here is where you explain who is hosting the podcast. It's a bit like the introduction you give to people at networking meetings.

Format - Are you doing solo monologues, round table discussions, news style documentary, interviews? Is your podcast ongoing or series

Who is your listener - It's for business owners and entrepreneurs who want to use podcasting to boost their visibility, brand and sales but who don't quite know how to do this.

What problem you are solving for the listener - This is in general, the over arching reason for doing the podcast. And remember boredom is a problem too so you want to be interesting. So for this podcast the problem I'm solving is getting business owners and entrepreneurs podcasting by giving advice, tips and removing barriers.

How long the podcast will be - pretty obvious how to answer this.

Work out your themes

By now you're probably pretty excited about getting going with your podcast planning. You've got your foundations, you've grown that into your podcast brief (maybe that's your walls if I want to keep the building analogy going...) now you need to figure out your big themes, your big topics. Oh sod it, your rooms.

You want to think of your podcast in the same way as TV producers think of TV series, authors think of book series (JK Rowling and Harry Potter), film makers think of film franchises and bands or performers think of song writing.

Stick with me on this. When you pick up a book, listen to an album, watch a programme on the telly or even listen to the radio - everything is coming to you in an order. You're hearing and seeing things in a certain way to take you on a journey.

And that's what you need to do with your podcast.

Let's take The Crown for example. We've had 4 seasons of The Crown so far. Ultimately it is a story of Elizabeth the second told through her role as Queen.

Each of the seasons tells a different part of the big story - Queen Elizabeth's life - but each season has its own theme or story arc running too.

In season 1 the focus was on becoming queen and Princess Margaret's relationship with Peter Townsend

Season 2 is told through the story of Queen Elizabeth's marriage

Season 3 has the theme of a changing world and where the Royal Family fits in to it

Season 4 is all about Prince Charles and Diana.

And in each of the seasons each of the 10 episodes has a story to tell within it.

So you have the big overarching story arc going across the whole thing, the story arcs of each season and the story arcs of each episode.

How does this work for your podcast?

Your big overarching story arc is your mission statement, your one or two sentence sum up of your podcast. If The Crown was a podcast its mission statement would be to tell the story of Queen Elizabeth.

We've nailed this bit so now we need to nail our next level story arc - our themes.

At this point I want to explain that whilst The Crown is in seasons this also works for ongoing dramas (or soaps). They will have short, medium and long term story arcs that they are working on. Usually these climax with peak points such as Christmas or anniversaries when they want the big numbers.

So having themes through your ongoing podcast will work for you, so keep sticking with me as I explain a bit more.

To come up with your themes I want you to spend 10 minutes writing down all the thoughts, topics, questions you get asked, in fact any and every little thing to do with what you want to talk about on your podcast. What I tend to do with this is write them all on separate post it notes or bits of paper.

Once you've got those down on paper I want you to group them together in themes. You might have noticed that my theme for the past few (and next few) weeks is starting a podcast. Your themes will be down to what it is you cover. But you will notice that naturally questions, thoughts etc belong under certain umbrellas.

Once you've grouped them together under their umbrellas or in their rooms (I haven't forgotten our podcast house or should it be a castle? ) you want to arrange them in to an order that makes sense. That flows from beginning to end.

Yes our episodes are our pieces of furniture!

But seriously you want your episodes to be like chapters in a book, songs on a really good concept album from the 1970s or a really good TV series. You want to keep people's ears on your content for as long as possible - that way you'll build your audience, you'll share your knowledge and you'll build your reputation and all the other things you want to happen from your podcast. And by creating episodes that flow from one to the next you are inviting your audience to stay with you, or indeed come back next week whether that's in a series sense or in an ongoing sense.

Understand what you want from every episode

Your podcast castle is built, your furniture is in place so it's job done? No. Sorry not yet. You've got to now plan those episodes because as much as the furniture looks nice and you're not bashing in to it, you actually need it to be comfy and functional.

To make sure you get the best for your audience from every episode you need to understand what you want from every episode.

To do this I want you to have an objective written down and in place for each of your episodes, a call to action for each episode and the key takeaway that your audience should have.

Doing this keeps you on focus. You should be referring back to your mission and your current or series theme. Does that episode serve your series theme? Does it serve your mission statement? Yes? Brilliant you crack on and get that episode recorded, edited etc. It doesn't? Then you need to tweak, change or maybe throw away altogether. Yes I am that harsh.

Review your plans

Plans are great. But I don't want you to be blindly following a plan without checking in on the plan.

I've got all my podcast episodes planned out until the end of March. But given how much has happened in January alone this year I am prepared for these to not work out the way I think they will.

It's certainly one of my biggest lessons from last year being more adaptable.

At the beginning of February I will get my planner and just make sure that the tone and messaging of my podcasts is still right. And I'll do the same at the beginning of March too.

Last year at the beginning of lockdown I did a week of special episodes about podcasting in a pandemic. I certainly didn't have those in my plan this time last year.

But it doesn't have to be a global pandemic that changes your plans. It could be feedback from listeners, something a client says or asks you or a new trend that you want to address or discuss.

I also enjoy a 90 day review. 90 days, three months or a quarter - whatever you want to call it - it's a decent amount of time to assess how something is going.

So every 90 days I go through my analytics, the responses I've had from listeners, on social media. I also listen back to a couple of episodes. Either random ones I select or if one got reaction that I wasn't expecting I'll listen back to that one to try and identify why.

I also look at whether my mission statement needs changing or adapting. And sometimes it does. As you grow and develop as a podcaster and as a business you should be growing and adapting your mission statement.

5 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself Before You Start A Podcast

The beginning of a year, a quarter, a month, a week or even the start of a new day all feel like great times to start something new. Including that diet that always starts next Monday, even if today is Monday.

And right now there is a lot going on - coaches are selling courses, there are more 5 day challenges than you can shake a stick at and if you're listening to this close to when it comes out you're more than likely in some form of lockdown and maybe dealing with childcare and homeschooling. A pandemic is a lot to to deal with, especially when it's been going on for quite some time and the rules keep changing.

Obviously I want you to be podcasting. It's a brilliant medium to get your message across, build your audience and even make sales. But I only want you to be podcasting if it's the right thing for you and at the right time for you. It's so easy to get caught up in the latest distraction, shiny thing - the MUST HAVE for 2021! There are some great FOMO tactics going on to get you to spend money!

Last week I told you how to podcast for free, this week I'm going to be telling some of you not to start your podcast. I'll forgive you for thinking I'm still on the Christmas sherry given my whole business is based on podcast services. And yes it does feel counter-intuitive, except I want you to be successful at podcasting. There's no point doing this half-heartedly. You won't see the results and you'll give up, get frustrated and potentially lose money. I've seen too many podcasts start only to suddenly stop 3 or 4 episodes in. No explanations, no nothing.

How do you make sure that doesn't happen to you? Well before you start you should ask yourself these questions. And make sure you're honest with your answers.

Why am I starting a podcast?
Who is my podcast for?
What does success look like for me?
How much time do I want to commit to this?
How much money do I want to commit to this?

Once you've answered these questions honestly you'll know whether a podcast is right for you and more importantly if a podcast is right for you now.

How To Start A Podcast For Your Business With Zero Budget!

It's January so if you're anything like me you'll have a million ideas and plans flying around your head for 2021, but maybe not the budget for all of them.

And with lockdown 3 taking place in England right now and restrictions across the rest of the UK and parts of Europe I totally understand why you might be wanting to think twice or maybe three times before you invest tonnes of money in a new podcast for you business.

Here's my guide to starting your podcast on zero budget.

Kit

First and foremost you need to be able to record your podcast. And whilst I'm sitting here with 8 different microphones I promise you do not need 8 microphones. Or even one to start with.

You can record your podcast on your mobile phone. The microphone in phones are actually fairly decent as long as you use them well.

What do I mean by use them well?

Speaking in to my phone in the same way I would if I was talking to a friend on the phone. So holding the top to my ear and the microphone is pointing at my mouth. This is how phone microphones are designed to be used best.

The other option with your phone is (and this is a reference for the UK mainly) to use it in the same way as contestants on The Apprentice use it. Although this sounds far breathier and my ps are really popping and not sounding great. If you do this I recommend you talk over the phone and not in to it. And if you can get a mic foam to go over the bottom of your phone that will take the edge of the breathiness off. (Super saving tip - you can use a sock. I have in the past.)

You also have a microphone in your phone headphones (or if you're posh your Airpods). Again this works absolutely fine if you want to record in to your phone or your computer.

If you're using your computer I would use headphones over the computer's in built microphone any day of the week.

You don't need any fancy software to record your podcast either. If you're using your phone (which I did when first starting my first podcast) you can simply use the voice memo app that comes with it.

If you're recording directly in to your computer you can record into zoom (which is free) or if you have a Mac you can record into GarageBand which is ready installed on your computer.

There is also a piece of software called Audacity which you can use. You have to download it but it is 100% free.

I'll come back to Audacity in a minute because you can also edit using this software. For now just keep in mind it's free and allows you to record your podcast!

Just a side note - if you're using Zoom to record make sure you've selected the right microphone in the settings and I would record on to the computer not the cloud. By recording locally you are not reliant on a good internet connection!

Studio

A studio would be lovely right. Sound treated room so there's no echoes etc. But that can be expensive to make for yourself and in the middle of a pandemic you might not want to be traveling to a podcast studio you can hire out.

But don't panic, your house or office is ok to record in. You just need to make wise choices about where you are going to record.

Soft furnishings are your friend. Choose a room with carpets and curtains. One that doesn't have huge ceilings too.

You want it to be cosy. I am recording this in my back bedroom. The curtains are drawn to protect agains the hard surface of the window. There is carpet. I've got a couple of dressing gowns hanging on the door and there is a bed covered in all my un-ironed but clean clothes.

There's lots of soft surfaces to help stop my voice sounding echoey. And that's all a recording room needs to be. A room that isn't an echo chamber (in the sound sense, not the social media sense).

There's a great description that somebody told me or I read somewhere that you want to imagine your voice as a ping pong ball. What you want is that ping pong ball (your voice) to hit the wall or the floor or the ceiling and just drop. Not come bouncing back at you full pelt. The more you can do to dampen those surfaces the better. Even wallpaper on the walls helps.

Essentially don't record your podcast in the bathroom...

If you live in a beautiful high ceilinged house with exposed brickwork walls and wooden floors then a) I'm jealous and b) don't worry. You can make a blanket den. I've been known to chuck a duvet over a few chairs and sit underneath to record. Or you can pop some sofa cushions on your desk around where you are recording to make a soft cave.

You don't need to spend money! Use the soft furnishings you've already got.

Software

I've touched on a couple of bits of software that you can use to record your podcasts already. Your voice memo app on your phone, zoom on your computer as well as GarageBand if you have a mac or you can download Audacity if you have a mac or a pc.

When it comes to editing first of all remember there is no law that says you need to edit your podcast. You can do it as live and put it out exactly as it is.

If you do want to edit you can use Audacity or GarageBand to do that. You can't edit at all in Zoom, but your voice memo app should allow you to trim or cut the beginning and end.

You need to be able to save your file as an mp3 so that it can be uploaded to a hosting platform.

Hosting platforms

There are a few free options out there when it comes to hosting platforms. I'm not here to recommend one over the other because I've not used them all so it's not fair for me to say one is better or worse.

Off the top of my head (and there will be more out there) I can think of Podbean, Anchor, BuzzSprout and Acast as platforms that offer free podcast hosting. I recommend you have a look at each of them (and ask around other podcasters) and decide which looks like the best fit. Anchor is the most free in that there are no other pricing plans apart from free. The others all have different pricing structures with a sliding scale of what you get.

Don't be afraid to get in touch with the platforms and ask questions. See how they treat you and make your decision from that.

Tits and Tinsel

I mentioned on my LinkedIn and Instagram that I was doing this episode and asked people to get in touch with any questions they had about podcasting on a budget.

And Matthew wanted to know about getting an intro or outro recorded by a Voice Over artist economically.

I have a few thoughts on this. First off it depends on what you mean by economically. If you mean cheap then I have bad news. The reason why good quality Voice Over work might feel as though it costs a lot for "just speaking" is because it's not just speaking. There's a lot more too it and with many professions you get what you pay for.

My friend and Voice Artist Samantha Boffin talks about this in her podcast Talking Creative which is as she describes it is "The podcast that looks at voiceover direction from both sides of the mic.

And this blog post by Sam sums it all up nicely

There are websites such as fiver or upwork where you can find people willing to do you a voice over intro and outro but I personally don't like recommending these because it becomes a race to the bottom and our creative industry in the UK is having a tough enough time as it is without pushing rates down further.

So if your budget doesn't stretch to a professional voice artist what can you do instead? There is no law in podcasting that says you need to have a voice artist record your intro and outro (there's no law that says you need an intro or outro). I've recorded my own for my podcasts and the person you hear at the beginning of this podcast saying welcome to Turn Up The Volume On Your Voice etc is actually my sister. But everybody thinks it's me because I put an effect on it.. So that was a waste of time on both our parts - might as well have done it myself.

If you want to have a jazzy intro and outro you can add music. There are sites out there that provide free music for podcasters to use with a credit. Copyright free does not always mean royalty free though. You must read the small print on any of these sites . Also be aware about what you are and are not allowed to use the music for. Some allow YouTube videos but not podcasts, some allow non-commercial use only.

For Turn Up The Volume On Your Voice I made the music using the loops available in GarageBand so I am the composer and it's all mine. And it's free. I am quite tight.

If you have a small budget I would spend it on a good microphone before I spent it on a voice over. Then I would spend it on treating the room, then I would buy slightly fancier kit and then I would start to worry more about the extras such as voice over and jazzy intros and outros. This bit is the tits and the tinsel - the shiny stuff but there's a saying about polishing certain things....

Should You Talk About Christmas On Your Podcast?

But actually there are good reasons to mention the C word and good reasons not to.

What to do when you’re overwhelmed but still need to record your podcast

It’s been a ridiculous week for me.

Lots of great stuff has been happening and hopefully lots of exciting stuff is going to happen too.

And on top of that I had a few last minute bits of work - which were great fun and I loved doing but all of that combined threw me off course a little bit.

I don’t know why but I need systems and short deadlines to get any work done. I blame years of radio where I had to have things done by a certain time because you can’t just put back the news bulletin because it’s not ready.

In this episode I explain the tools I use to give myself headspace to record my podcast. As well as dish out advice I'm obviously not following right now about focusing in Minecraft.

What To Do With Your Podcast At Christmas.

This week I’ve been having the best time at Janet Murray’s #2021Sorted event, planning my business for next year - which means planning my podcast topics for next year too. I think I’ve got the first twelve nailed. Which is exciting. No sneaky peaks.

But the highlight for me was being asked to lead the Women In Podcasting panel on Wednesday as part of the Level Up Sessions.

I spoke about my most asked question "How long should a podcast be?" and then covered the hang up I think stops most women from grabbing that microphone and hitting record.

Should You Have Guests On Your Podcast?

Like all questions in podcasting the answer to whether you should have guests on your podcast is “it depends”.

But there’s a good reason for this. It all depends on your podcast and what the point of your podcast is.

Is your podcast a way of building up your reputation, your authority and to show off your knowledge? If so then you need to think hard about whether a guest will help you achieve that.

There are two types of guests:

The Expert and The Case Study

There are others who can appear on your show - listener questions or comments but they are contributors, not guests.

The expert is the guest who knows more than you about a particular subject.

The Case Study is somebody who has gone through or experienced what you talk about.

When you are planning your podcasts - using the framework I gave you - then you’ll see where you want a guest to come on.

Why I Use My Podcast Planning Toolkit

I generally plan at least a month in advance, but I know what themes I am covering each quarter.

Last year I came up with my task lists for each podcast I work on because I was concerned keeping everything in my head wasn’t really a good idea

And that worked really well.

So then I started looking at the podcast planners that I could see out there. And I was disappointed. The ones I found were missing a lot of key planning elements.

How To Plan Your Podcast Episode whether you are a solo podcaster, have a co-host or a guest.

Planning your podcast episode is as easy as opening your mouth and talking, right?

Well no. The difference between a well researched podcast and somebody delivering a stream of consciousness verbal brain dump is very easy to hear. And it isn’t always good.

So how can you make sure your podcast hits the mark?

Here is my planning formula that works every time.

There are 4 questions you need to keep in mind when planning your individual podcast episodes.

What is the key point of the podcast?
What is the podcast not about?
How am I going to keep the listener listening?
What is the key takeaway/point the listener will remember at the end of the episode?

Once you've understood these questions you need to work through the following framework.

Come Up With Your Episode Objective
Plot Your Main Points To Cover (and who is going to cover them if there’s more than one of you!)
Understand Why You Are Covering These Points And Why Now
Decide on Your Call To Action
Decide How You Want Your Listener To Feel At The End

Follow these steps and you’ll be planning your podcasts quicker and with more confidence.

How To Record Your Podcast Outside

IT’S SUMMER

And in the UK that can only mean two days of ridiculously hot weather where even your eyeballs are sweating followed by thunderstorms for days on end.

But in all seriousness better weather also brings more opportunities for you to record your podcast outside.

Why would you want to do that though?

Personally after what feels like a millennium of being cooped up thanks to lockdown I want to get outside of the normal four walls so I’m using all the opportunities I can to do so.
Being on location - if you’re talking about a certain place or a certain area can actually add to your podcast. You get the atmosphere of the place through the noises going on around you
You might want to talk to people “on the street” and do a vox pop. It’s hard to do that in your office.

You don't have to go far to record your podcast outside but you do need to consider a few things such as how you're going to record it, the safety of your location and the extra noises you'll encounter.

With record numbers of podcasts being uploaded to Apple Podcasts your are probably wondering if there's any point in starting a podcast if you've not already got one going?

Surely the ship has sailed right? You might as well just get on TikTok because that's where all the cool kids are hanging out now.

Well no.

And before you say "of course you'll say that Charlotte... your whole job is podcasting", there's actually some good evidence to show just how much room for growth there still is in podcasting. You might want to get your bags packed and on board the good ship podcast sooner rather than later though.

Charlotte Geeks Out Over Stats

Charlotte probably needs to get out a bit more. OK we all need to get out a bit more right now, but even when we could get out Charlotte actually enjoyed looking at listener figures.

It goes back to her days in radio when listener numbers were the difference between keeping your job and being fired.

Now the same people who produced the figures for radio do the same for other listening - including podcasts.

So Charlotte has got her geek on and had a look at them and what they say about podcasting in the UK.

Help! I Hate The Sound Of My Voice

You've recorded your podcast. You're about to get on with editing it. You press play and WOAH!!! Hang on, that's not your voice is it?

Yes. Yes it is. It does sound different. It does sound a bit higher pitched than you were thinking it would right? But I promise you it doesn't sound terrible.

Science tells me we hear our voices differently to others because we get added bone conduction to hear ourselves talk. (It's not just for posh headphones!). If you want to know more about why we react so badly to the sound of our own voices you should listen to this very good TED Talk by Rébecca Kleinberger. You can listen to her here

This episode though focusses on what you can do to get over not being comfortable with the sound of your voice.

I've been there, but 20 years later I'm absolutely fine with listening to myself. Yes there are moments where I cringe - but that's more often than not because I've performed badly, rather than simply being uncomfortable with my voice.

My top tips include

Stop writing lists and Post It note ideas. Record them instead. You'll have to get used to hearing your voice.
Wear headphones when recording. It sounds more like what others hear.
Slow down - a slower pace tends lowers the tone of your voice.
Don't take up smoking as I was once (jokingly) advised to do!

HELP! I've lost my voice

There's been a lot of bugs around recently and even Charlotte's been hit by a really nasty one.

So much so she lost her voice.

And whilst it may feel like March is a strange time to think about looking after your voice to protect it from sore throats and strain, actually you need to be looking after your voice all year.
