I run four online businesses. I started the first one, a professional decluttering and organizing business, in 2015, and trademarked my Seven Clutter Triggers framework in 2021. But I let that business and another business slide for more than two years. In early 2024 I dusted everything off, decided to revive both businesses, and ended up opening two more new businesses during the year!

I've always been a multi-passionate person with more ideas than I knew what to do with. That's idea clutter! So I had to learn how to pare it down so that I didn't have too much work to manage, and so that I didn't spiral into overwhelm from having massive amounts of ideas and not enough time to do them all.

Luckily, Val was instrumental in making me see that I didn't have to keep my four businesses in silos. I actually could apply my own Seven Clutter Triggers framework to my own businesses and declutter what I no longer needed. And more importantly, I could help others apply this framework to their businesses, too!

The great thing about the Seven Clutter Triggers framework is that it works for both business and personal decluttering - because it's all about mindset. I LOVE helping people understand HOW and WHY clutter accumulates for them, because it's always a mixture of two or three different clutter triggers that have become habits and behaviours. And when you know your own habits and can recognize them, that makes it much easier to change them!

Sharing my way of approaching clutter is what I love doing most. It will be a pleasure to talk about any or all of the Seven Clutter Triggers so that listeners can learn how to recognize where they can make changes that will help them run their businesses with more ease.

We're taking it back to basics, folks. Yes, that's my mantra for the year, and it's all about figuring out what absolutely needs to get done and matching it to the energy I've got. It’s like sorting through a pile of sparkly things to find the real gems.

I received an email from a fellow pro who's been in the same boat. After some time off, we both had to re-evaluate our expectations and productivity levels. It’s not just us – there's a general energy slump going on, especially during these sunny summer days. So, let's be real about our energy and time commitments.

Continuing our journey of not letting words scare the crap out of us, Val breaks down what a funnel actually is.

She briefly reminisces on a time when she had no idea what a funnel was and was throwing spaghetti at the wall, trying to build her list. She let everyone know that this was NOT the way to go, but it was during this time that the proverbial light bulb came on for her. After creating workshop after workshop and collaborating in bundle after bundle, she realized that a funnel is just a flow, a path, a journey you have outlined for your prospective clients.

Val emphasizes that a funnel does not end with a high-ticket item and suggests that thinking of it as a continuous pipeline of related products can be less intimidating and more effective. She gives an easy example of structuring your flow, starting with a lead magnet that provides instant value. Then, continue to the next offer that is congruent and makes sense. She stresses that you should not start throwing out things that don’t make sense based on what they originally bought from you. She reminds us of the importance of ensuring each subsequent product or service logically builds on the previous one to maintain customer engagement and drive conversations to keep interest high.

Val acknowledges being in a season of extreme overwhelm and shares the importance of identifying and changing old habits that resurface during such times. Sharing personal experiences, she emphasizes the need to be aware of these habits and recognize which ones need to be altered. One major habit she has identified is self-sabotage, which manifests as enticing new ideas that distract the mind and lead it off course. While new ideas may seem beneficial, they often contribute to further overwhelm and hinder progress.

In this episode, she reveals a valuable lesson learned - focusing on what is already working. By scaling back and narrowing the focus on tasks that yield the most significant results, it becomes possible to optimize limited time. The challenge lies in resisting the urge to engage in many tasks simultaneously, as the brain may trick us into believing that progress can be made in different areas simultaneously. Acknowledging that working excessively or ‘multi-tasking’ in a condensed time frame is not sustainable, Val advises making a realistic plan of what can realistically be accomplished. This involves prioritizing and postponing certain tasks without setting a definite time frame for their completion. Val aims to continue to overcome overwhelm and achieve greater productivity by understanding personal habits and consciously diverting attention from self-sabotaging behaviors. Val found out that she has been spending an extra $600 per annum just to sustain her email list she had built up over the years through packages and giveaways. This was the wake-up call to remind her to activate her re-engagement campaign.

If you are a regular to this podcast, you will know Val often goes through adventures we are also familiar with and shares them openly, which is what makes her such a brilliant coach. In this episode, she talks about beginning her re-engagement email campaign journey. This campaign involves sending a series of emails to your list with the aim of re-engaging or reactivating inactive subscribers. Through this exercise, she aims to identify her true community and let go of inactive subscribers. This experience will help her detect her actual community and get rid of the dead weight.

What are you excited about for 2023? Val is back and ready to crush her 2023 by following a few simple steps. Awareness of what you are doing, stopping the ‘shoulds’ and the ‘coulds’, and then getting back to the basics. Be more mindful of what’s on your list and what really is a priority. Sometimes those items are on there because they are expected but are they really necessary? If you aren’t already doing them, then they probably aren’t.

Val is nailing down the basic tasks where she’ll see success and traction. Working on those tasks will make it easier to see growth in your business. Easier to work in and on your business when you are seeing success and growth. Relook at your old views – are they relevant? Could they be changed? Brought back down to a basic level? Relook at your goals and re-evaluate where you need to be. Goals can be overwhelming, but it is important to have them so that you can benchmark your success.

We all know it’s coming but do we have to always do it now?

With so many ideas coming at you fast and furiously, perhaps it’s time to analyze, reflect and purge. But not just now, make this a monthly habit. Hey! Nice to meet you. I’m Val Selby, the entrepreneur. I am a business owner, coach, and podcaster. I’m also the GFWC Valley Volunteers Club President. We so often find ourselves giving to others. Helping others and labeling ourselves without taking ownership of who WE really are. I am open to possibilities. I am grateful for the awareness. I am me and I’m not sorry. How often have you found yourself starting the conversation with “I’m sorry…”? We are so conditioned to start a conversation this way but are we really sorry? Sometimes you have to sit in your feelings, feel those “feels” and realize that no… we aren’t actually sorry.

Today’s episode brings a raw look at how we work through our feelings and how to push forward. When you stop and reflect, you then have a chance to think about whether you’d do something differently. It’s time to stop the “I’m sorry…” concept. By acknowledging that you aren’t sorry, it can bring you a little peace. Imagine the possibilities!

She let her tea leaf reader decide which country! Can you believe that?! She made a complete career change. Teaching herself about freelance writing with YouTube videos. She’s had her income completely wiped out due to Facebook and Pinterest business model changes. And through all that, she’s still winning. She is a true bada$$.

Expertise Vs. Imposter Syndrome

Consider yourself to be an expert? Is an expert required to have a degree, certification, or to be a professor? Many of us overlook the fact that we have decades of experience. You may not realize it, but as you learn and share, people see you as an expert. Don't let imposter syndrome rob you of your expertise. If you've helped people, you are an expert.

Val shares valuable advice about how to know when you are an expert at something in this episode. And whether your expertise is credible, even if your own social media does not reflect that. Take a moment to reflect on that internal struggle, learn why you think you might not be an expert, and she will give you options on how to quiet that voice or shut it up for good. Other people may view you differently than you view yourself. Now is the time to understand that!
