Director John Badham convinced a room full of designers, including legendary visual futurist Syd Mead, the man behind the look of Blade Runner and Tron, to design something genuinely unlike anything seen on screen before, built by ex-Green Beret Eric Allard and a team of mechanics. The result? A robot so convincing that audiences genuinely believed Number Five was alive.

Number Five remains a remarkable achievement in robotic design, conceived to be able to show a range of emotions, and voiced by Tim Blaney. He was the star of the show, so much so he got the same respect on set any major actor would, including hugs every morning.

But while Johnny Five, as he named himself, remains a high point of the movie, the movie itself has faced criticism in the years after its release, for casting Fisher Stevens, a white Jewish actor, to play the Indian character Ben in brownface; a decision that both Stevens and John Badham regret.

Where AI is concerned, much of science fiction is now becoming science fact. In 2022, a Google chatbot claimed it was also alive, and feared being switched off, however that was quickly debunked by experts. Can AI ever truly be alive? Can AI have a soul? Johnny Five not only learns empathy, compassion, and defies his war machine programming, he reminds us all that life is not a malfunction.

The Hunger Games has a remarkable journey from page to screen, and the Hollywood landscape had to shift before Katniss Everdeen could take her place as one of cinema's defining heroines. When Color Force and Lionsgate snapped up the film rights in 2009, the studio was gambling on a post-Twilight world that had just learned a crucial lesson: young adult fiction, with its fiercely devoted fan bases, could be franchise gold. But the path to production was anything but straightforward.

The casting of Jennifer Lawrence; blonde, fair-skinned, fresh off an Oscar nomination for Winter's Bone, ignited fierce debate online, with fans questioning whether she could embody a character whose identity was so tied to her dark haired and olive-skinned complexion in the books. Katniss Everdeen would become the ultimate hero for young adults, showcasing empathy and strength in a movie with heavy themes of oppression and dystopia without watering anything down (except maybe the removal of some blood!)

What makes The Hunger Games' success so striking in retrospect is how deliberately unglamorous it was. Director Gary Ross made a conscious choice to ground the story in grit and restraint, resisting the temptation to turn Panem's spectacle into Hollywood spectacle. The result was a film that felt unusually serious for its target audience, and all the more powerful for it. Opening to over $152 million domestically in its debut weekend, it became one of the biggest non-summer openings in box office history, and signalled that the franchise era of YA cinema had truly arrived.

Puss's journey in this film isn't just about chasing wishes; it's about confronting fears and embracing life, showing that even legends can feel vulnerable.

The legacy of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish extends far beyond its box office success and critical acclaim. In 1989, animator Don Bluth dared to go it alone, without the might of George Lucas and/or Steven Spielberg, and pushed the boundaries of what animated movies could explore in All Dogs Go To Heaven; the third and final movie to celebrate this podcast's seventh birthday.

Released on the exact same day as Disney's The Little Mermaid, this darker, grittier tale of redemption featured a con-artist dog literally escaping heaven to seek revenge on his murderer, complete with a terrifying nightmare sequence that traumatized a generation of kids.

But the real horror wasn't just on screen. All Dogs Go To Heaven became a haunting memorial to ten-year-old Judith Barsi, whose voice brought orphan Anne-Marie to life just over a year after she and her mother were killed by her father, with the movie released posthumously, and its end credits song dedicated in her honour.

Despite being overshadowed at the box office by Disney's juggernaut, All Dogs Go to Heaven has endured as a cult classic that represents both the peak of Don Bluth's artistic ambition and the beginning of his studio's commercial decline.

Bluth's rebellious approach to animation, rejecting Disney's formula in favour of raw emotion and moral complexity, created a film that dared to ask whether dogs have souls, whether redemption is possible, and whether animated movies need happy endings. From its chaotic production with multiple story contributors to its lasting impact on viewers who still remember that nightmarish boat ride to hell, this is the story of an animated film that refused to play it safe.

In 1988, three Hollywood titans, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Don Bluth, came together to create what would become one of the most emotionally devastating animated films ever made, and it is the second movie to celebrate this podcast's seventh birthday.

The Land Before Time wasn't just another dinosaur movie: it was an ambitious attempt to recapture the magic of Bambi for a new generation, complete with a mother's death scene that traumatized millions of kids and made it a cultural touchstone. Despite the cutting of over ten minutes of footage deemed too scary, the film still pulled no punches in its portrayal of loss, survival, and the harsh realities of a prehistoric world.

What makes The Land Before Time so enduring isn't just nostalgia, it's the film's willingness to treat young audiences with respect, addressing grief and fear head on.

Working with both Spielberg and Lucas wasn't exactly the dream scenario Bluth expected it to be, though, and the partnership between Amblin & Sullivan Bluth would, like the dinosaurs they depicted, quickly become extinct. Despite this, The Land Before Time remains a masterclass in emotional storytelling that still resonates nearly four decades later.

The 1986 Don Bluth animated classic An American Tail, a film that became the highest-grossing non-Disney animated feature of its time and helped reshape the animation industry, is the first movie to celebrate this podcast's seventh birthday.

The project began with a concept by David Kirschner that was first pitched to Jeffrey Katzenberg at Disney, but when it reached Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, the legendary director saw its potential as a feature film. Spielberg, making his first foray into animation, brought aboard Don Bluth, a former Disney animator whose 1982 film The Secret of NIMH had impressed him with its return to the lush, detailed style of classic Disney animation.

The film's story held deep personal significance for Steven Spielberg. Fievel was named after Spielberg's grandfather's Yiddish name, and the narrative of Jewish immigration and escape from persecution in 1885 Russia drew directly from stories Spielberg had heard about his own family history.

An American Tail doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of immigrant life in 1880s New York, either. The film portrays sweatshops, tenement poverty, political corruption, and exploitation, though it wraps these difficult themes in the accessible framework of a mouse family's journey to find each other in a new land.

Don Bluth's unique animation style revolutionized the industry, proving that animation is a powerful medium for all ages, and should not be pigeonholed as just movies for children. An American Tail tackles serious themes like immigration, anti-Semitism and child slavery, making it relevant for audiences of all ages.

The CGI animation boom and the disappointing box office returns of the early 2000s had left a scar at Disney, and behind the scenes, there was huge change in the animation department. By 2004, then-CEO Michael Eisner had closed Disney's traditional 2D animation department, convinced that hand-drawn animation was dead.

What followed was a corporate coup, with Roy E. Disney leading a campaign to oust Eisner, which worked spectacularly. When Pixar's John Lasseter took over Disney Animation in 2006, his first act was to bring back the very art form Eisner had killed.

Lasseter immediately re-hired legendary directors Ron Clements and John Musker, who had left Disney just months earlier after years with projects in development hell following Treasure Planet's failure.

Despite the numerous controversies around representing Disney's first Black princess—from changing her name from "Maddy" and her job to avoid slavery connotations, to criticism that she spends only 17 minutes of the film in human form, they ended up with Tiana, one of Disney's most accomplished, hard-working and important princesses, and what was being developed as The Frog Princess became The Princess and the Frog.

The film's stunning animation style, represents a heartfelt return to traditional hand-drawn techniques, combined with modern digital artistry to create a visually captivating experience, but as we all know, it didn't last, and The Princess and the Frog became both a creative triumph and a bittersweet swan song for an art form that defined Disney's legacy.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise in total has accumulated $1.15 billion across six movies from three studios since 1990, and so when Paramount were looking to reboot existing IP, it made total sense to go for the heroes in a half shell, and to get permanent teenager Seth Rogen aboard.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem blends 2D and 3D elements to create a fresh visual experience that sets it apart from previous Turtles adaptations, and for the first time uses actual teenagers to voice the Turtles, capturing their essence and making their teenage struggles relatable and authentic. It addresses themes of family and acceptance, resonating with audiences through the Turtles' journey to find their place in the world, as well as finding mutants just like themselves along the way.

While the visuals are iconic, the film's soundtrack might be even more so, which features classic East Coast hip hop tracks, and a bit of Vanilla Ice's iconic 'Ninja Rap' from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. You had to be there.

When director Maggie Kang set out to create an animated musical combining K-pop, Korean mythology, and a demon-slaying girl group, she had a clear vision: to make a film authentically rooted in Korean culture. After more than a decade working on major animated projects, Kang pitched what she called her "love letter to K-pop" and her Korean heritage to Sony Pictures Animation. The result was KPop Demon Hunters, a film that would go on to become a global phenomenon that no-one saw coming.

The film's success exceeded all expectations. KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix's most-watched film ever with over 500 million views, surpassing even Squid Game. The soundtrack made history as the first film soundtrack to place four songs in the Billboard Hot 100's top ten simultaneously, with lead single "Golden" holding the number one spot for eight weeks. The song earned five Grammy nominations, and songwriter EJAE became the first Korean American woman nominated for Song of the Year.

KPop Demon Hunters represents a significant evolution in the Korean Wave. Created by a largely non-Korean production team in America, the film nonetheless maintained deep cultural authenticity, from its references to Korean girl groups of the past, and to Korean shamanism, to the small details like how characters use their chopsticks. It combines vibrant animation with KPop culture, creating a unique visual and audible feast. The soundtrack is not just catchy; it's Golden.

Animation Season 2026 kicks off with Pixar's fourth feature, turning 25 years old this year, the incomparable Monsters, Inc.

In the world of Monsters, Inc., fear is a power source, and children's screams fuel the world of Monstropolis, which is both clever and a bit dark. This is a bright colourful movie, that cleverly hides its darkness from kids, but adults will see it everywhere.

James P. Sullivan, as Monsters Incorporated's number one scarer, has no idea that his world is literally about to be changed by a three-year-old human girl, who finds herself in Monstropolis. His best friend Mike Wazowski is an eyeball with arms and legs who just wants to put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!

Originally titled Monsters, Monsters, Inc transformed from the story of an accountant in their 30s reliving childhood fears of monsters, to a story about scaring just being the monsters' day jobs. Neither Sulley nor Mike were in the original pitch, both characters evolved massively over time.

The production of Monsters, Inc. involved significant technological advancements for Pixar - only six years after Toy Story - especially in fur animation, making Sulley's character feel more lifelike and relatable. And bizarrely, also tentacles.

Animation isn't just for kids; it’s a versatile art form that can tell deep stories, as seen in the exploration of themes like fear and love in Monsters, Inc. It cleverly critiques societal fears and misconceptions, showing how characters are shaped by the narratives they believe—like the monsters thinking children are toxic.

I'm pretty sure kids aren't toxic, though, right? RIGHT?

The Salkinds' signature approach to filmmaking, taking beloved existing characters and mounting lavish international co-productions outside the Hollywood system, had worked brilliantly for the first Superman films but was now straining under financial pressure. The father-son team assembled an impressive cast, constructed elaborate sets at Pinewood Studios, and poured resources into cutting-edge visual effects for Santa's flying sleigh. They envisioned a franchise that would become as iconic as their Superman films, a movie that would define Santa Claus for generations of children.

Instead, the film became another expensive disappointment that Christmas season, unable to recoup its massive budget despite its technical achievements and heartfelt performances. The planned holiday classic flopped at the box office in the US, but it has nonetheless found an affectionate cult following in the decades since, especially here in the UK.

It remains one of Britain's most loved Christmas movies. It’s pricey, overly-stuffed, extravagant, best enjoyed with a tipple, and full of nostalgia - a little bit like a traditional British Christmas to be honest.

After a four-year hiatus following the overwhelming success of Ghostbusters, Bill Murray returned to acting for this passion project. But before signing on, Murray literally tore apart the original script with screenwriters Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue to completely rework it, particularly the romantic subplot and family scenes.

What followed was one of Hollywood's most notorious productions. Director Richard Donner and Murray clashed constantly throughout the three-month shoot in New York City and Hollywood. Murray felt Donner rushed through takes and kept pushing him to perform louder and broader, while Donner struggled with Murray's improvisational style.

The $32 million production took a physical toll as well. Murray worked on dusty, smoky sets filled with fake snow that made him cough up blood. Co-star Carol Kane accidentally split his lip so badly during a scene that filming had to stop for several days. Co-writer O'Donoghue was equally miserable, claiming less than half the original script survived.

The film's iconic ending speech was almost entirely improvised by Murray, who went off-script and received a spontaneous ovation from the crew. O'Donoghue was less than impressed, but the moment became one of cinema's most memorable holiday monologues.

Scrooged adds layers of comedy and modern critique to Dickens' original text, showcasing not just the spirit of Christmas but a satirical look at the entertainment industry, and the commercialization of Christmas.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Howard, a great mattress salesman, but a less-than-adequate husband and father. When his disappointed son tells him he wants a Turbo Man action figure, Howard springs into action on Christmas Eve, only to find every store out of stock. This is why you don't leave your Christmas shopping to the last minute!

Despite the initial poor reception, Jingle All the Way has become an unlikely holiday classic, and an effective satire of the commercialization of Christmas. The movie has found new life through annual holiday season rewatches, with nostalgia playing a significant role in its enduring popularity.

And in a weird twist of fate, the movie, which came out in November 1996, predicted exactly what parents would do to get a Tickle Me Elmo that year...

It was only a matter of time before these sinister men were turned into a comic book, and then adapted into a movie, but how did a dark, obscure comic get transformed into a summer blockbuster that would gross over $589 million worldwide and launch a franchise?

Director Barry Sonnenfeld and screenwriter Ed Solomon made the bold decision to completely reimagine Men in Black as a buddy-cop action-comedy, keeping only the core premise while building something entirely new around it, with the premise of New York being the hub of alien activity, and Earth a sanctuary for alien refugees.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' on-screen chemistry made the titular Men in Black iconic, with Jones bringing his signature stoic humour to create the perfect counterbalance to Smith's energetic comedy, resulting in one of cinema's most memorable buddy cop pairings.

Men in Black's impressive practical effects work earned Rick Baker's team an Academy Award, with cutting-edge animatronics and makeup seamlessly blended with CGI from Industrial Light & Magic, creating a visual experience that still holds up today.

It's the perfect summer blockbuster, that was never intended or seen as a summer blockbuster. The script was constantly evolving, even into post-production, and the movie's plot was changed after test screenings forced an edit, and those changes would make Frank the Pug one of the most important characters in the movie...

What made the film revolutionary wasn't just its structure, but its willingness to interrogate the rom-com fantasy itself. Tom isn't a charming hero—he's a guy who projects his own idealized narrative onto Summer, a woman who's been honest about not wanting a relationship.

It influenced how a generation thought about relationships and romantic expectations. The film's famous split-screen "Expectations vs. Reality" sequence became an instant classic for how brutally it captured the gap between romantic fantasy and truth. It sparked endless debates: was Summer the villain, or was Tom?

500 Days of Summer arrived just as the traditional studio rom-com was beginning its decline. It represented a self-aware turning point; proof that audiences were ready for more complex, honest explorations of modern relationships. In deconstructing the romantic comedy, it created something that resonated even more deeply: a bittersweet, deeply human story about growth, self-delusion, and the messy reality of love.

Three wildly different film adaptations, a legendary unmade version; this story of humanity's end keeps haunting Hollywood.

This is not the first adaptation of Richard Matheson's book I Am Legend. Vincent Price battled zombie-vampires in 1964's stark black-and-white thriller The Last Man on Earth. Charlton Heston faced off against intelligent albino mutants called "the Family" in 1971's, The Omega Man. Each adaptation changed the creatures, the cause of the apocalypse, and crucially, gave audiences hope where the book offered none.

With only 16 weeks of prep time, the Will Smith/Francis Lawrence version, this time named I Am Legend, spent years in development hell, and quickly went from a 40-page outline to a greenlit blockbuster, and to say it was chaotic is an understatement. Whole New York City blocks were closed off for filming, and one scene on the Brooklyn Bridge cost $5 million for just six nights of filming. One week into filming, director Francis Lawrence panicked and switched from practical makeup effects to CGI, extending post-production and inflating the budget. The team was still seeing finished visual effects shots just one month before the film's release, leading to last-minute reshoots to adjust the controversial ending.

I Am Legend offers a unique blend of action and deep emotional storytelling, highlighting human isolation and the struggle for survival, with one of the bestest canine companions in film. Will Smith's performance as Dr. Robert Neville is both captivating and heartbreaking, showcasing his character's descent into loneliness, and the eerie depiction of an empty New York City resonates deeply in today's world, reflecting on themes of loss and solitude in a pandemic context.

Evil Dead II was not the sequel to The Evil Dead that Sam Raimi intended. With a bigger budget, and more experience, he essentially remade the first film with a comedic twist. Released in 1987, Evil Dead II became the perfect bridge between horror and comedy.

Ash Williams transforms from every man survivor to wisecracking action hero. Campbell's physical comedy is next-level; the guy gets beaten up by his own possessed hand. His performance became so iconic, it launched an entire franchise and Ash as a cult hero. Practical effects, makeup, and prosthetics created some truly memorable (and gross) moments.

Evil Dead II helped define the horror-comedy genre and influenced countless filmmakers. It became a cult classic that's still celebrated decades later, leading to Army of Darkness and eventually the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series. Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi became legends in genre filmmaking.

Evil Dead II proved you could be terrifying and hilarious at the same time. It's a masterclass in creative filmmaking on a budget, and proof that sometimes the best sequels are the ones that aren't afraid to reinvent themselves.

Bruce Campbell's on-screen suffering was real—those bruises, cuts, and exhausted reactions weren't acting. The crew ended up living in the dilapidated cabin, inventing techniques and visual effects out of creativity and desperation. It was the epitome of low budget, inexperienced but passionate filmmaking.

The Evil Dead could have easily disappeared into low budget horror movie obscurity, though. They struggled to find domestic distribution until Stephen King saw it at Cannes and called it "the most ferociously original film of the year." That single endorsement transformed everything.

When it was released in the UK, it became the best selling VHS of the year in 1983. It was subsequently banned as the "number one video nasty" in the UK, and called too extreme for mainstream distribution. Thanks, Mary Whitehouse.

The Evil Dead rewrote the rules. It proved indie horror could be artful, that gore could be kinetic poetry, and that a cabin in the woods could become the most terrifying place on Earth. It showed a generation of filmmakers that you don't need studio money to make something revolutionary; you just need vision, determination, and friends willing to suffer for the cause.

Virgins! Get ready to light the black flame candle, and summon the iconic Sanderson Sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, who brought the sistahhhs to life with their unforgettable chemistry. It would lead to Hocus Pocus' eventual resurgence, with the Sanderson sisters as queer icons, and huge influences on the drag community.

What started as a simple bedtime story evolved after years stuck in development hell. It would be The Divine Miss M herself who essentially got the movie greenlit, and Midler fully committed to the bit.

But after a disappointing July 1993 release, VHS and DVD releases started to make it profitable and Hocus Pocus become a Halloween staple, as well as a cult classic.

Freddy Krueger had officially died in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare in 1991, and from 1984 his character had evolved from terrifying villain to quipping and comedic, and New Line Cinema had already started merchandising the character. Realizing that maybe they had killed Freddy too soon, New Line wanted a way to resurrect him without actually resurrecting him. There was always something deeply unnerving about putting Krueger on a pedestal, and no-one thought it more than his original creator, Wes Craven…

Wes Craven's New Nightmare cleverly blurs the line between fiction and reality, creating a unique meta-narrative, starring original final girl Heather Langenkamp as herself, focusing on her journey from horror star to mother and how that reflects the personal impact of the franchise on her fictional life. Craven specifically wanted to focus on how horror movies affect children, showcasing the blurred boundaries between protection and temptation.

Despite its initial box office struggles, New Nightmare has gained a cult following, mostly in the wake of Wes Craven's next project, Scream, which took what New Nightmare had attempted and refined it. Wes Craven said that Scream was a movie for people who watch horror movies, and New Nightmare was a movie for people who make horror movies. Scream is credited for refreshing the slasher, but we all know New Nightmare is Wes Craven’s real life meta masterpiece.

In 1992, director Bernard Rose transformed Clive Barker's British ghost story, The Forbidden, into one of horror's most intelligent and thought-provoking slashers. But the inspiration ran deeper than fiction. The tragic 1987 murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy, who called 911 claiming someone was breaking into her Chicago apartment through her bathroom mirror, is a chilling real life inspiration to one of cinema's most enduring, and gothically romantic horror icons.

Candyman is not just a horror movie; it’s a reflection of societal fears, racial injustice, and the haunting legacy of violence against black people in America, specifically black men. The film, set in the Cabrini Green housing project, serves as a backdrop for a story that’s both supernatural and tragically real. Tony Todd's portrayal of Candyman is chilling yet tragic, highlighting the character's backstory as a victim of racial injustice rather than just a typical horror villain.

Helen Lyle, a white woman who becomes entangled in the Candyman myth, exposes the privilege and naivety that often accompany the quest for truth. The contrast between her character and the realities faced by the residents of Cabrini Green is not just a plot device; it’s a commentary on who gets to tell stories and which voices are heard.

Andrew Neiderman's novel was originally going to be adapted in the early 90s, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Brad Pitt, but casting Satan proved difficult and so the project was halted.

Speak of the devil, the O.J. Simpson trial gave new life to this story, and everyone became interested in courtroom drama and corrupt lawyers. The movie was resurrected, with Keanu Reeves choosing it over Speed 2, and the production desperate to entice Al Pacino to play the devil. Maybe they made a deal with the devil?

In a bizarre twist worthy of the film itself, a copyright violation lawsuit forced the studio to digitally amend key scenes, proving that even fictional devils face real-world consequences.

Inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, and the Faust legend woven into late 90s Manhattan, The Devil's Advocate remains a fascinating time capsule of '90s excess while asking timeless questions about the price of success and the susceptibility of human ambition and greed.

An idea based on a line from Casablanca, The Usual Suspects takes five felons in a line-up and creates the layers of deceit and twists, before the final realisation that Keyser Söze may not be who we thought it was - or was he?

Who is Keyser Söze?

With a heavyweight cast of big names and character actors, everyone in this movie is impeccable to the very end. The film's iconic twist ending cleverly invites viewers to question everything they thought they knew about the characters.

The Usual Suspects' atypical non-linear storytelling made it stand out against other neo-noir crime dramas of the 90s, along with its extremely unreliable narrator. What is true? What isn't? The line-up scene and Benicio del Toro's unexpected flatulence during filming is very true, and led to a scene that became one of the film's most memorable and humorous moments.

But really the legacy of the film and how it became a cult classic, aided by a brilliant marketing campaign, is the lingering mystery and pop culture creation of Keyser Söze.

Showgirls is remembered for its outlandish dialogue, the over-the-top performances, culminating in controversy, cult status, and unapologetic campiness. It's widely regarded as a mess, a critical and commercial flop, and poor Elizabeth Berkley took the brunt of the blame.

Showgirls is polarizing, for many it's a guilty pleasure drenched in excess, but for others, it’s a train wreck that’s hard to look away from. This movie is no financial flop though, in fact it's one of MGM's most lucrative of all time. Sex sells.

Nomi Malone hitchhikes her way to Las Vegas, dreaming of stardom and glory in the world of top tier showgirls. Writer Joe Eszterhas dreamed of a script that contained the real life stories of the women who worked in Vegas clubs, but director Paul Verhoeven wanted a not-so-subtle commentary on the darker side of fame and ambition in show business.

It’s looking at the American dream in a dark, twisted mirror, showing the misogynistic rot of show business, the dark reality of a patriarchal society that on the surface claims to love, idolise and promote women, it actually exploits and degrades women in the name of entertainment. Just like what happened to Elizabeth Berkley.

It wasn't until real life Producer Barbie, Margot Robbie, contacted Mattel, with her ideas for a meta take on Barbie that Warner Bros started to take notice. Producer Barbie contacted Director Barbie, Greta Gerwig, and together they assembled the brightest and best Barbies in Hollywood to join them to celebrate Barbieland and all their achievements by having Barbie and Ken going to the real world and discovering that Barbieland's version of matriarchy isn't quite the experience of the real world.

Sonja/Sonya's evolution from Robert E. Howard's historical 16th-century warrior to Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's iconic Marvel Comics fantasy heroine, each brought something unique to the Red Sonja legacy.

Kalidor (definitely not Conan!) is in an interesting case study of Hollywood rights navigation, where creative solutions led to a character that channels the spirit of Conan while remaining legally distinct.

Red Sonja's innovative approach to special effects, and the decision to shoot everything in-camera created a distinctive visual style that prioritized practical filmmaking techniques over post-production polish.

While it has its flaws, Red Sonja represents an ambitious chapter in fantasy filmmaking that pushed boundaries and took creative risks, offering valuable insights into the evolution of the sword-and-sorcery genre and Hollywood's ongoing relationship with strong female protagonists.

Natasha made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Iron Man 2 as a mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, quickly becoming a core member of the Avengers despite lacking superpowers. The character evolved from a supporting femme fatale into one of the MCU's most complex heroes; a former Russian child assassin grappling with her dark past while seeking redemption through heroic acts, and finally finding a family. Her journey culminated in the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, giving her life to obtain the Soul Stone and save the universe.

Marvel had been talking about a solo Black Widow film for years since her 2010 debut, but it had never come to pass. It's not the first time a solo film had been talked about for Natasha Romanoff. Lions Gate held the rights to the character in the early 2000s, but that movie idea was scuppered due to the failure of other female-led action movies.

Black Widow's solo film finally arrived in 2021, making it an eleven-year wait from her MCU introduction. The delay was attributed to Marvel's former leadership's reluctance to greenlight female-led superhero films, concerns about their commercial viability, as well as the planned Infinity Saga narrative needing to focus on introducing other characters, like Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

Black Widow would give fans a much-needed backstory for Natasha, as well as introduce her sister, Yelena. The importance of both characters extends beyond individual heroism to representation. From George Clooney's regretful reflections on his rubber nipples to Arnold Schwarzenegger's $25 million payday for delivering ice puns, this production reads like a masterclass in studio interference gone wrong.

Schumacher's vision clashed with studio demands for maximum merchandising, costume designers prioritized sculpted anatomy over actor comfort, and how plot came a distinct second to ensuring characters and vehicles were as toyetic as possible.

A fun, comedic mid-2000s action flick, capitalising on the chemistry of its two stunningly beautiful leads; it became the movie that defined a generation of celebrity culture, and sold hundreds of thousands of gossip magazines.

But it all could have been very different, had it not been for The Stepford Wives.

The film's inception, a chaotic filming schedule that resulted in significant budget overruns, and a constantly changing script pale in comparison to the media circus that followed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, affectionately given the portmanteau 'Brangelina', and how their relationship flourished as they played married assassins; oblivious to each other's secret lives until they’re pitted against one another to finish their respective jobs. Not to mention his previous marriage failing at about the same time they were filming this movie - surely it's all a coincidence?

Their journey from co-stars to Hollywood power couple to eventually married and sharing six children would not lead to their happily ever after, unlike John and Jane Smith.

You think the gunfight at the O.K. Corral was dramatic? That's nothing compared to Kevin Costner's alleged studio sabotage campaign, the director who got fired just one month into filming, and how Kurt Russell allegedly secretly took over directing duties while refusing to put his name on the film.

A bitter rivalry with Costner's competing Wyatt Earp nearly killed Tombstone before it reached cinemas, and Val Kilmer's career-defining performance as Doc Holliday only really happened because of studio interference, which came from Costner's attempt to derail the production.

From the scorching Arizona heat, to the replacement director brought in with just three days of preparation; a director who made the cinematographer quit three times, as well as various other crew members, Tombstone is a masterclass in how great movies can emerge from absolute production disasters.

It's a tale of Hollywood hardball, Western justice, and that sometimes your worst enemy can accidentally become your greatest asset.

In many ways, Cutthroat Island might just be more of a misunderstood gem, that happens to have been created when Carolco Pictures was at the very end of its life - mired in debt, and struggling to stay afloat. Cutthroat Island was its last chance. Cutthroat Island was never the reason Carolco fell into bankruptcy, but it didn't exactly help matters either.

It is true that the movie faced a storm of production woes, casting drama, and a box office disaster that left it walking the plank. Female-led action movies like Cutthroat Island often face harsher scrutiny than their male counterparts. But Cutthroat Island also deserves a second look, showcasing epic stunts, lush visuals, huge pyrotechnics, and a swashbuckling adventure that’s way more fun than its critics would have you believe.

It's time to navigate the choppy waters of pirate cinema, and explore why it’s high time we give this movie more love! Savvy?

To mitigate that cost, and to the benefit of this movie, they decided to rely heavily on practical animatronic snakes. The real hero of this movie was Walt Conti, whose company Edge Innovations faced an impossible challenge: creating two colossal animatronic snakes that could actually swim. Drawing on his experience with aquatic mammals, like the whales of Free Willy, Conti engineered a waterproof marvel requiring ten puppeteers to operate, with pre-programmed movements.

The legacy of Anaconda extends far beyond its box office success and Jon Voight's memorably unhinged performance. This film helped launch Jennifer Lopez's movie career and established the template for "so bad it's good" cinema.

But is it really "so bad it's good"? Or is just actually one of the greatest creature features of the 90s?

The possibility of losing the rights led to New Line and Warner Bros fast-tracking The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, itself an ambitious anime that needed help from 60 international animation studios to get finished on time.

This is the end. The everlasting legacy of The Lord of the Rings, from Tolkien’s stories, through each adaptation we’ve gone into, to this, the end of all things. It’s time to drop the One Ring into the fires of Mordor and think about how far we’ve come...

The Return of the King had a monumental impact on the film industry, and epic box office success, raking in over $1.1 billion worldwide. The film swept the Academy Awards, winning all 11 nominations, including Best Picture, a feat shared only with Titanic and Ben-Hur.

But it's not all awards and box office records; it's an incredible journey of characters we love, breathtaking visual effects, and the unforgettable musical score by Howard Shore, which has left an indelible mark on cinema. This episode also goes into the incredible work by Weta Workshop on the rest of the visual effects, plus the award-winning hair, make-up and prosthetics.

Peter Jackson proved unfilmable material was not only filmable, but that he could create a cinematic trilogy masterpiece with an inimitable legacy, that even he himself couldn't match again, but I’ll come back to that next episode.

The Two Towers ups the ante from The Fellowship of the Ring, balancing intense action with rich storytelling. This episode focuses on the pivotal Battle of Helm's Deep and the groundbreaking introduction of Gollum, a character that redefined motion capture in film. Gollum's evolution from CGI concept to a fully realized character, is thanks to Andy Serkis' groundbreaking performance.

The filming for The Two Towers included gruelling night shoots, and the sheer scale of the battle scenes meant that the crew ended up with "I survived Helm's Deep" t-shirts. It was a monumental filmmaking achievement, taking months to shoot under challenging conditions.

The Lord of the Rings wouldn't be The Lord of the Rings, if it didn't feel like The Lord of the Rings, and esteemed Tolkien illustrators Alan Lee and John Howe were brought on as conceptual designers, ensuring visual continuity with the imagery many readers associated with the books. The artistry behind the sets and props in the series reflects a rich history, with every detail crafted to enhance the authenticity of Middle Earth.

Acquiring the rights from Saul Zaentz took a while, and at the time Jackson was contracted to Miramax, so Harvey Weinstein took charge.

With a planned two-film adaptation, filmed back-to-back, this The Lord of the Rings adaptation was worked on under Miramax. Then the budget started to balloon, but parent company Disney refused to help.

Jackson was given an ultimatum by Weinstein - either reduce the number of films to one, continue with two on a heavily reduced budget, or abandon the project entirely and find another studio willing to take it on within four weeks.

Jackson and his "fellowship" would choose their own quest to find a new studio, and they ended up at New Line Cinema, where something incredible happened...

With several failed attempts struggling to adapt the "unfilmable" material, including one which would have starred The Beatles, animator Ralph Bakshi had first expressed an interest in making a version of The Lord of the Rings in 1957. It would take twenty years for him to get his opportunity, but even then the Dark Lord's forces were against him.

Enter producer Saul Zaentz, who stumped up the cash to buy the rights to Tolkien's work, and allowed Bakshi control over his ambitious, passionate attempt to make an animated version of the books, in two parts.

Bakshi would choose to shoot an entire live-action film first to use as a visual reference to rotoscope the animation, which was a controversial, expensive and time-consuming choice, but it would lead to a young Peter Jackson becoming inspired to read the novels and find out more...

Flash Gordon has been on our screens for almost 90 years, and the story of the dashing all-American hero, his companions, and his battles against Ming the Merciless laid the groundwork for modern sci-fi, influencing everything from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and Doctor Who.

From his humble comic strip roots, Flash's adventures were perfect for a modern film adaptation, and legendary film mogul Dino De Laurentiis was adamant he knew what he wanted for his Flash Gordon; a visual feast, a lavish production, a playful tone and his friend Danilo Donati as the production and costume designer.

From its colourful costumes to its campy dialogue, Flash Gordon is a spectacle that has transcended time, and cinema owes Flash a huge debt of gratitude, but it was not an easy movie to make. Its original director Nicolas Roeg ended up leaving after a year, and Mike Hodges stepped up, but with very little control over what you see on screen.

Queen's iconic soundtrack for Flash Gordon was groundbreaking, blending rock music with film scoring in a way that had never been done before. Flash Gordon remains a cult classic, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans, and continues to be celebrated for its unique charm and creativity.

Despite the issues behind the scenes, and the behaviour of their leading man, Flash Gordon has an undeniable charm that has kept it alive in the hearts of fans worldwide.

It alive? Sorry, I meant... GORDON'S ALIVE!

Instead of the serene and pious behaviour expected of her, she brings a vibrant, modern flair to the convent that has everyone questioning their notions of faith and community.

The new Sister Mary Clarence's vibrant personality clashes with the strict convent rules. From her unique take on the church choir to her interactions with the stern Reverend Mother who, of course, puts her in charge of the choir.

Sister Act's iconic soundtrack not only makes you want to sing along, but also showcases how the power of gospel and Motown can turn a group of nuns into a sensational choir, transforming traditional Catholic hymns into toe-tapping gospel hits.

But Sister Act wasn't always intended as a starring vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg, and nor did the screenplay end up how it started, but it did lead to the writer, Paul Rudnik, visiting a convent in rural Connecticut, hoping to meet with the only Catholic nun to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences...

From Sega’s fierce rivalry with Nintendo, to the chaotic path of bringing Sonic to life on the big screen, there are more twists and turns in this story than Green Hill Zone.

Sega’s quest for a mascot that could rival Mario led to the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog, but several attempts to make a movie fell at the first, second, third and fourth hurdles. Finally, after Sony put their project into turnaround, Paramount Pictures sped in and Sonic's new design was finally launched!

The muscular legs, the fur, the gloveless hands, the human teeth!

The fan criticism and backlash to Sonic's design was unprecedented, but so was what happened next...

The uproar from fans was the catalyst for a superfast redesign, that not only respected the character’s legacy, but made him relatable to new audiences. Sonic’s evolution and the importance of fan engagement shaped the movie, leading it to become a beloved franchise.

Queen Elizabeth I was a powerful female figure in a male-dominated society, and Elizabeth accurately emphasizes her real life ability to navigate political waters with grace and power. Cate Blanchett's performance as the young Elizabeth is not just iconic; it's a masterclass in acting, showcasing her transformation from a naive young woman to a formidable queen. That doesn't mean this movie is particularly historically accurate in other things, though.

There was no poisoned dress. It was totally fabricated. ;-)

Regardless of accuracy, Elizabeth's legacy gives us a glimpse of what life may have been like for the UK without the Virgin Queen's influence, and its implications for contemporary discussions on gender and power. Elizabeth herself is not just as a historical figure but a symbol of resilience and strength for women everywhere.

Watching The Woman King is like stepping into a vivid tapestry of history, action, and empowerment that celebrates the resilience of women in an often overlooked narrative - 19th century black women in positions of power and influence.

It’s not just about battles and victories; it's about the emotional journey of these women, their struggles, and their triumphs against the backdrop of a kingdom at war. There's no way to sugar coat the fact that the film's portrayal of Dahomey's involvement in the Atlantic slave trade isn't entirely accurate, however there are always nuanced discussions about historical representation in movies that are here primarily to entertain.

And The Woman King does indeed entertain, as well as tell an important story of sisterhood, strength, bravery and shines a light on black women's excellence. While The Woman King is fictionalized, it still sheds light on significant female roles in African history - history that we may not know without this movie's existence.

Representation matters, and The Woman King serves as a powerful example of how narratives centred around strong black women can inspire future generations. Let's just hope Hollywood sees fit to make more of them...

If Atlantis really existed, no one wrote about it until Plato, who did so 9,000 years after its destruction. Atlantis: The Lost Empire draws from Plato's original Atlantis myth, as well as classic adventures stories like Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), Victorian-era adventure fiction and steampunk, various New Age interpretations of Atlantis, and elements from Edgar Cayce's "readings" about Atlantis.

This movie's interpretation of the Atlantis myth is firmly rooted in a technologically advanced civilization, with its own language (a language that only Milo Thatch can read!), and visually inspired by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola; everything about Atlantis: The Lost Empire was huge, in both style and scope.

It remains one of the most beautiful and epic movies of Disney’s animated back catalogue. Despite its lacklustre box office, it's grown into a true cult classic and fan favourite in the years since its release, but it has also been accused of white saviour tropes, clichéd characters and plagiarism...

The story of Heracles is revered across Greek mythology, but this isn't Heracles. This is Hercules. Same guy, kind of, but this isn't just a retelling of a Greek myth—it's a whole exploration of what makes a true hero; taking some "creative liberties" with the original myth—goodbye tragic backstories, hello superhero narratives (as well as Disney's penchant for merchandise!)

Hercules’ journey from zero to hero is basically the story of Superman (with a bit of Rocky thrown in for good measure) and the celebrity of Michael Jordan, introducing everything from his quirky sidekick Phil, antagonist Hades, love interest Megara, and the Muses who steal the show with their gospel flair. It's a stark contrast to the serious, more Oscar-bait films that preceded it, like Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

A movie about Hercules isn't really focused on Hercules though, because Hades exists, and Meg is also one of Disney's most complex and interesting heroines. The film's animation style was a bold departure from previous Disney works, merging traditional and modern techniques, taking inspiration from Gerald Scarfe.

Hercules is fun, flawed and fascinating, it’s timeless and so very late '90s, and only exists so that John Musker and Ron Clements could make the movie they actually really wanted to make instead....

Basil may just be a little mouse, but this little mouse packed a mighty punch for Disney during a time when the animation studio was teetering on the edge of disaster. With a mix of clever storytelling, dark visuals, and a villain who’s as charismatic as he is frightening, Basil proves that sometimes, the smallest heroes can save the day—or in this case, an entire animation division!

The Great Mouse Detective (or Basil the Great Mouse Detective!) played a crucial role in ushering in the Disney Renaissance, and how its success helped revive the company's animation legacy, after the critical and financial disaster that was The Black Cauldron.

Coming out at a crucial time for Disney, with a changing of the senior management guard, and combining traditional animation with early CGI, Basil has never had the acknowledgement he deserves for persuading Disney's senior management that investing in new movies, rather than just re-releasing old ones, was the way forward...

And they did all of this in one year, with a massively reduced budget.

Shrek 2 builds on its predecessor, exploring themes of self-acceptance and the chaos of familial relationships, giving us more depth, elaborating on the story we’ve seen, and carrying it on naturally. He’s married the princess, now he has to meet the parents.

Shrek 2 is seen by many as a perfect sequel. Not a perfect movie, but a perfect sequel. This is also a movie with heart, with a great central villain who’s clearly been in it for the long run, and all Fairy Godmother wants is her boy on the throne. The longest-running American animated series, longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American scripted primetime television series, both in seasons and individual episodes. The Simpsons is, quite frankly, a phenomenon, and the long-awaited The Simpsons Movie took nearly two decades to come to fruition, as fans eagerly anticipated a feature film adaptation of their beloved show.

But despite being a long-running, beloved show, the making of the movie wasn't easy, and it faced numerous rewrites, with the script being revised over a hundred times before its release. Many iconic characters from the series made appearances, with a total of over 320 characters included throughout the movie, with creator Matt Groening aiming to create a cinematic experience that would appeal to both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise.

But appealing to newcomers led to many fan-favourite characters being omitted from the script, and somehow Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rainier Wolfcastle exist within the same universe? But who copied whom? I guess we'll never truly know...

ParaNorman's unique approach to horror allows it to explore serious societal issues through animation, and creatively blends animated horror with heartfelt themes of acceptance and understanding.

Laika Studios have never been one to follow the leader, and while other studios were focusing on CG animation, Laika removed it's CG department purely for stop-motion. Developing groundbreaking techniques first used on Coraline, enhanced further for ParaNorman, including colour 3D printing, to create over 31,000 props.

ParaNorman, which also features the first openly gay character in an American animated film, emphasizes the importance of communication and empathy in overcoming fear and prejudice. This is a movie that doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of the past, with historical references shaping ParaNorman’s story, particularly the Salem witch trials

Like Norman’s Grandma says when Norman tells her the zombie eats brains… “he’s going to ruin his dinner. I’m sure if they just bothered to sit down and talk it through, it would be a different story”.

All Of You probably know the intergenerational trauma this movie perfectly depicts, but it's also a movie that took the time to show deep love and respect for Colombia, mi encanto. By having a Colombian Cultural Trust, and directors willing to take on suggestions and ideas, to make Encanto diverse and representative of real Colombian life, traditions and culture.

Tuns out, Stephanie Beatriz was also Waiting on a Miracle, while recording that exact song.

We Don't Talk About Bruno, except we do. Because Bruno is one of the most complex and interesting characters in this movie. And while Abuela has suffered great loss, become a refugee and a single parent to triplets in the space of one day, beautifully encapsulated by the Academy Award-nominated Dos Orugitas, she's also making her entire family suffer through her own anxiety and trauma.

Basically Encanto is pretty special, and it's one of Disney's greatest modern animated films because of it.
