Trained as a classroom music specialist having gained a 1st Class Honours degree from Trinity College of music and a PGCE at Kingston Polytechnic. Spent over 30 years then teaching in the Midhurst area in the middle of the South Downs, first as an upper secondary teacher, then as an Intermediate school teacher gaining AST (Advanced Skills Teacher) status which gave me the opportunity to support teachers in primary schools. I then worked as a primary music specialist for 10 years working in several schools. On my retirement I then started up a private music business from home, teaching children to be musicians through the piano. I also run two choirs and am a member of two other choirs as well as playing in a recorder group and a steel band.

Piano performance anxiety is a manifestation of certain beliefs that your student holds.

Some of these thoughts might be:

Fear of failure

Fear of judgement or criticism

Messing up in front of their peers

Expectations on how their performance should go

Thinking that the performance must be a perfect rendition

Not trusting in their abilities

There might also be some aspects of the performance or exam itself that might make your student feel nervous, such as:

How prepared your student is

Experience level of performing

How many people will watch the performance?

Length of the performance – if a student has a 20-minute recital, this will be very different from a 1-minute performance.

Context of the performance - for example, performing for an examiner would be very different to playing just for their family.

Getting to the root thoughts of anxiety with your student can be really revealing and a good place to start.

Do you struggle with your mindset around money? Do you feel like you don’t have a good grasp over your finances or never quite seem to make enough as a music teacher?

It’s not surprising many music teachers struggle to make enough money and end up taking on day jobs to pay the bills. And that’s not because teaching music is inherently unprofitable.

It’s because we don’t talk about money.

We don’t face it head-on and say, “Hey, money, wanna be my friend?” 😍

So. Why not? Why do so many of us avoid even thinking about our finances?

I believe there are three biases that might be making you think of money as your enemy.

You’re an artist.
You’re on a mission.
You’re female.

Even just one of those things means that society has taught you that money should be neither seen nor heard. And if you’re three for three? Well, that’s a tough one and I’ve been there.

But none of those things should mean that you can’t make a good income, if we stop and think about it.

The gender pay gap is very real, but I don’t think any of us think it’s how things should be. (If you do think women should be paid less for the same work or that the jobs women tend to do have a lower value, please just go away. Thanks!)

Having a greater purpose behind our work shouldn’t mean that we don’t get paid properly, either.

We need good people to do good work. In order for those people to have the mental space to do that work, they need to not be worrying about money.

And, finally, we need artists. At the risk of making you blush, humanity needs you to create beautiful things and teach other people to create beautiful things.

Otherwise, honestly, what is the point of it all anyway? The folks trading on wall street and investing in silicon valley have nothing to play with if artists don’t create.

Teaching sight-reading skills to piano students is not always as simple as teaching them great reading skills.

To be a great sight-reader you need more than just note names and intervals. You need to be able to translate those to movements that make sounds...quickly.

The difference between reading and sight-reading is time. Or, rather, the lack thereof.

When we read music that we’ve never seen or heard before, in the moment, we have to move fast. We have to be quick on our fingers and make guesses when our brain doesn’t have time to figure it out.

Solid sight-reading skills are a wonderful asset to have as a collaborative musician or accompanist. They’re also super useful to have in your backpocket for any performance situation to get you out of a jam.

But after we teach our students to read, how do we take them beyond slow deciphering of notes and towards cat-like sight-reading reflexes?

Teachers can find lessons everywhere if they look carefully enough. In this article, I want to share with you the lessons I learnt from my years of folk dancing that show up today in my music studio.

I was that student growing up. You know the one that you complain to other teachers about because they’re too overscheduled to practice?

Yeah, that one.

The thing was, I wasn’t actually overscheduled. My parents weren’t the driving force behind my busy timetable. It was me.

I wouldn’t quit anything.

One of the many things I wouldn’t quit was Irish dancing. (Before you ask...Yeah, sure, kinda like Riverdance.)

I could’ve been a better pianist if I focussed entirely on piano. However, I believe it’s experiences outside music that made me the teacher I am today.

As you read through my lessons from folk dancing, I hope you’ll take some of them with you. But, more than that, I hope you’ll investigate some of your own experiences and think about how they’ve affected the teacher you’ve become.

Your music studio brand prioritises your strengths and is

honest about your weaknesses. It differentiates you, as a teacher, from
