Op 1 februari 1953 hoort Jan Anderson op de radio over de extreem hoge waterstand bij de Spoordijk waardoor een overstroming dreigt in de Oostwijk en de VOP. Een deel van de Nederlandse regering is in allerijl op weg naar de Haringstad.  

Theo van Everdingen weet mooie verhalen naar voren te halen:

Wat was er aan de hand met de hoed van de burgemeester?

Er wordt hard gewerkt op stadhuis maar wie weet dat er ooit ook bokswedstrijden waren op het stadhuis?

Ooit was atletiek vereniging Fortuna actief op het hoogste niveau van Nederland. Hoe kon dat gebeuren?

Henk Blaauw (89) haalt herinneringen op aan zijn tijd als politieagent van 1961 tot 1989 in Vlaardingen. Hij arriveert als eerste bij de enorme kunstmeststoffen brand bij de ENCK in 1963 waarbij een deel van Maasland ontruimd moet worden. Hij voorkomt een miljoenenbankroof aan de Schiedamseweg, maar het droefst blijven de ‘kleine’ zaken waarbij kinderen betrokken waren.

Vlaarse Dingen was onlangs te gast bij DFDS, de grootste ferrymaatschappij van Noord-Europa. Vanuit de vrachtterminal in de Vulcaanhaven varen vijf schepen lijndiensten tussen Immingham, Felixstowe en Vlaardingen.

In het DFDS kantoor, de yard en aan boord van een schip vertellen zij ons wat DFDS vervoert en hoe dat in zijn werk gaat.

Dick van der Werf en Dirk van Vuuren waren twee reizigers in één van de drie betrokken treinen. Zij zaten beiden in de stilstaande trein. Ernst’s vader voer bij de Holland Amerika Lijn op m.s. Veendam en legde regelmatig aan in Rio de Janeiro. Dat was ook de woonplaats van de beroemdste voetballer aller tijden, en die kwam vaak even buurten aan boord. Zo ontstond een bijzondere vriendschap.

In 1273 kreeg Vlaardingen stadsrechten, en daarmee mocht de stad ook het recht in eigen hand nemen. Op de Markt werden misdadigers en bedelaars op het schavot gefolterd, en wie geen genade kreeg werd opgehangen op het Galgeveld. (de huidige Galgkade).
