Obadiah is the shortest book (21 verses) in the Hebrew Scriptures, found among the Minor Prophets. This powerful prophetic message delivers God’s divine judgment against Edom for their pride, arrogance, and exploitation of Jerusalem during the Babylonian invasion. Edom, descendants of Esau, is condemned for failing to support their brothers, the descendants of Jacob—they even captured fleeing Judeans and handed them over to enemies.

It was morally wrong for the nation of Edom to harm, rather than bless, their brother. This goes back to the very origins of the two nations — it began with Esau's hatred for his brother Jacob. That hatred eventually led to outright physical violence.

When they were invaded, you stood aloof, refusing to help them. Foreign invaders carried off their wealth and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem, but you acted like one of Israel’s enemies.

Obadiah 1:11

Edom watched with complete indifference to the pain and suffering of their close relatives, Israel. They saw what was happening but did nothing.

Why will Edom be judged? The prophet Amos provides this word from the Lord.

This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked.”

Amos 1:11

Head to Heart – God is a Righteous Judge, and He keeps the score. Under His watchful eye, no one will escape His judgment. Let us remember that the Lord is merciful and gracious. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Psalm 73:3-6, 16-28

3 - I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.

4 - They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong.

5 - They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.

6 - They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.

16 – So, I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!

17 - Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.

18 - Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.

19 - In an instant, they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.

20 - When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.

The book of Obadiah is an oracle of judgment – Edom will be humbled. God declares complete destruction. Nothing can be hidden from the Lord and His righteous judgment.

Every nook and cranny of Edom will be searched and looted. Every treasure will be found and taken.

Obadiah 1:6

Edom will be tricked and pushed out by its "friends." The men who are at peace with Edom will deceive and overpower them.

All your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace while plotting to deceive and destroy you. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won’t even know about it.

Obadiah 1:7

But God offers hope to anyone willing to turn away from their pride and sin. His gifts of love, mercy, and grace are offered freely.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.

God’s desire is for His followers to trust Him and live humbly with others. Love God. Love others. Today’s Bible lesson focuses on pride, including personal pride and the arrogant pride of a nation that believes it is invincible.

Obadiah is the shortest book (a single chapter) in the Hebrew Bible, located between Amos and Jonah. This book is a powerful oracle that highlights God’s judgment against Edom (the descendants of Esau) for their pride and betrayal of Judah.

Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom:

We have heard a report from the LORD,

and a messenger has been sent among the nations:

“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”

Obadiah 1

A struggle that started in the womb between twin brothers, Esau and Jacob, leads to a conflict between their descendants, the Edomites and the Israelites. Because the Edomites stubbornly refuse to help Israel, first during their wilderness wanderings (Nm 20:14-21) and later during an invasion, they are strongly condemned by Obadiah. This little-known prophet describes their crimes, reviews their case, and declares their judgment: TOTAL DESTRUCTION.

After her enemies invaded Judah, the Edomites celebrated and mocked her suffering. Because they lived in seemingly undefeatable cities carved out of rock cliffs—like those seen today in Petra—they confidently believed nothing could harm them. However, as Obadiah would reveal, they were wrong.

Head to Heart: The Almighty Lord is sovereign and rules over all nations, not just Israel. He is the Righteous Judge and will deliver judgment on all people with equity and fairness.

Title: God’s Everlasting Covenant

Today, we begin a new series on the podcast, Season #21 – Hope & Promise: The book of Obadiah. It’s a short prophetic book in the Old Testament, located between Amos and Jonah.

What is the message, and how does it relate to us today? To understand the book of Obadiah, let’s go back in history… all the way to Genesis.

God called Abram out of the distant land of Haran and promised that he would become a great nation. This was an everlasting covenant between God and Abraham and his future descendants.

“I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

Genesis 17:7-8

Abram’s name was changed to Abraham, and his wife Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah. Isaac was born when they were both old. Isaac married Rebekah and was 60 years old when they welcomed twin boys.

The rivalry between these two brothers—Jacob and Esau—began in their mother’s womb and lasted for many generations. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, and Esau’s name was changed to Edom.

Title: I Will Praise!

When we praise, adore, and worship the Almighty God, we acknowledge His holiness, supreme power, and loving character. This is our act of sacrifice to honor Him as Creator and Redeemer, and to celebrate His faithfulness, goodness, mercy, and love. We can offer praise and worship through song, scripture, prayer, and silent reflection.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Psalm 146:1-2

Notice the repetition: “Praise the Lord.” This reflects the psalmist’s personal commitment to live a life of praise. This word in Hebrew is Hallelujah! The commitment to praise the Lord involves choosing not to rely on others. We cannot place our trust or dependence solely on people.

Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.

Psalm 146:3

Praise and adoration belong to God. He is worthy, holy, and the Sovereign Creator. Worship is our way of showing gratitude to the Lord. God created us to worship Him. Praise opens a path for us to experience His presence. God inhabits the praise of His people.

Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name.

Worship, praise, and adoration. Over the past weeks, we've looked at many passages of Scripture. These lessons have caused me to search my heart and understand the importance of praise and adoration in my life. We have examined the hymns of praise in the book of Revelation. Oh, the glory surrounding God’s heavenly throne and the beauty of the new city and its streets of gold.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations … the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.

Revelation 22:1-3

When we teach in Israel, we often say: “Where there is water, there is life.” This river in the Holy City flows with healing water. It is fitting for Revelation to close around the throne of God and of the Lamb. God’s servants will worship, and they will reign forever and ever.

“Behold, I am coming soon. I am the Alpha and the Omega,

the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

Revelation 22:12-13

The message is clear—Jesus will return. He is the eternal Son—Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Revelation 22:17

The invitation, “Come,” is open to everyone. It is a free gift (Romans 3:24). He is coming soon. Are you ready to meet Him? Will you face Him as Lord and Savior or as Judge?

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Revelation 21:1-2

God will make all things new—a new heaven and a new earth. The holy city, New Jerusalem, will be filled with God's glory and its brilliance. John describes the city's magnificent beauty.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

Revelation 21:10-11

To be gathered with all believers, people from every nation, tribe, and tongue—the Lamb’s bride. What a glorious sight! God’s Holy Presence in the New Jerusalem. John warns his readers that only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life will enter the New Jerusalem. We must choose to follow the Lamb—accept His gift of salvation—today.

Head to Heart: What will that beautiful gathering of the Lamb’s bride be like? The description John gives falls short of its glory and magnificence! Still, these verses should fill our hearts with great hope and anticipation.

God originally created the earth and heaven to be our everlasting home. But sin and death entered the world, turning the earth into a place of rebellion.

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Revelation 21:1-2

The subtitle of the Holy City, “the new Jerusalem,” raises a question. The "old" Jerusalem was also called the "holy city" and described as a "bride" in Isaiah 52 and 61. Since the Jerusalem from above is the "new" Jerusalem, we can infer that it is somehow connected to the old one, meaning the new is the old renewed.

"And He who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also, He said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty, I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment." Revelation 21:5-6

God offers each of us a choice. Will you choose to drink from salvation's spring, the water of life? Those who accept His invitation and remain loyal to Christ as overcomers will inherit all the new things in the city of God. They will be God’s children, and He will be their Father.

Over the past few weeks, we have studied several Hymns of Praise in the book of Revelation, written by John, the beloved disciple. The opening verses in chapter 19 begin with the great multitude in heaven, the twenty-four elders, and the four living creatures offering praise and worship to our God.

After this, I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just.” …

And from the throne came a voice saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.” - Revelation 19:1-2, 5

The English word “hallelujah” comes from a Greek term, which itself transliterates the Hebrew halle-lu-yah, meaning “Praise unto Yahweh.” This transliteration only appears here in the New Testament in verses 1, 3, 4, and 6.

There is also rejoicing because the “wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” This contrasts with the prostitute and her immoral lovers mentioned in previous chapters, featuring the Lamb and his pure bride in “fine linen, bright and clean.”

The great vision, beginning in verse 11, shifts between Old Testament references and earlier mentions of Christ in Revelation. Christ will keep His word, because He is the Word of God. He is faithful & true!

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

In Revelation 5, a mighty angel loudly proclaims, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open this scroll?” John says he wept because no one was found worthy to open the scroll. Then, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb, takes the scroll from the right hand of Him who sits on the throne.

At the end of chapter 6, the sixth seal is opened, and people on earth try to hide from God (see Revelation 6:15-17). Chapter 7 of Revelation begins with God sending four angels to hold back the winds of judgment until His own are sealed and protected.

After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree.

Revelation 7:1

As the chapter ends, John sees a vast multitude from all nations and cultures standing before God's throne, clothed in white robes. They are identified by the angel as those “who have come out of the great tribulation” (verse 14). The angels are gathered around the throne, while the elders and the four living creatures fall face down before God and worship Him. What a beautiful worship scene!

Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will shelter them with His presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Revelation 7:15-17

"The Lamb will shepherd His people and lead them to living water. Every sorrowful memory of pain and suffering will be taken away by the Heavenly Father.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen!"

In Revelation 4 and 5, John is taken in the Spirit to heaven. He is shown the heavenly throne, surrounded by the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders. The majesty and splendor are breathtaking. Then, he saw a scroll in the right hand of the One seated on the throne, sealed with seven seals.

And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice,

“Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”

And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.

Revelation 5:2-4

John’s sorrow eases when one of the elders announces that someone has “triumphed.” He looks to see the mighty Lion (the conquering warrior-Messiah from the Root of David) but instead sees the striking figure of a “Lamb” as if it had been slaughtered, standing in the center of the throne room.

And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that He can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Revelation 5:5

The Lamb is victorious and has been given all power and authority from the One seated on the throne. When He takes the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fall down and sing a new song as they worship the Lamb.

And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the scroll and to open its seals, for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

Title: Worship at the Throne

In Revelation, chapter 4, we see a marvelous example: The Throne of God in heaven. Worship there is endless, unceasing, constant, and everlasting.

John is the last remaining disciple, living on the Island of Patmos. He is given a specific assignment from God. John is transported in the Spirit to heaven and receives a fresh view of God's majesty and power.

After this, I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.

Revelation 4:1-2

The throng surrounding the throne of God consists of twenty-four elders, seated on twenty-four thrones, and four living beings. The four living beings never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever.

Revelation 4:9-10

He is holy. The Lord God Almighty is worthy to receive glory and honor and power.

The Greatest Story

The central message of Christmas, found in Luke 2:11, is "Christ the Savior is born." Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, the promised Messiah, brings hope and peace to the world. This phrase symbolizes Jesus' fulfillment of prophecy, His divine identity as God's Son, and His mission as Redeemer. This is God’s story—His master plan.

Scene 1: Zechariah and Elizabeth (Luke 1:13-25)

Scene 2: The angel, Gabriel, visits Mary in Nazareth (Luke 1:26-38)

Scene 3: Joseph’s Dream (Matthew 1:18-25)

Scene 4: Mary Visits Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-45)

Scene 5: Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem is witnessed by angels and shepherds (Luke 2:8-20)

In Scene 6, Joseph and Mary take Jesus to the temple for purification as required by the law of Moses. Two trustworthy witnesses, Simeon and Anna, who had faithfully walked with God for many years and waited for this child—God’s gift—were present. Anna shares the good news of Jesus, and Simeon proclaims, “My eyes have seen Your salvation.”

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”

During the Christmas season, we hear the words, “Glory to God in the highest.” This phrase expresses both praise and adoration. The angel’s announcement and the heavenly host’s chorus of praise reflect their recognition of His majesty, greatness, and immeasurable worth.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they (shepherds) were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:9-10

The angel announces good news and great joy. The heavenly host glorifies and praises God for the gift of a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. The shepherds hurry to Bethlehem to find the baby lying in a manger, surrounded by a young mother, father, and stable animals.

"And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them." Luke 2:20

A prayer of praise from the biblical Gospel of Luke, where Mary "magnifies" or glorifies God for His power, mercy, and faithfulness. The focus is on God's greatness, with Mary exalting Him for choosing her to bear the Messiah and for His promise to lift the humble and lowly while bringing down the proud and rich. 

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked on the humble estate of His servant. Behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.” Luke 1:46-49 

Mary’s soul praises and magnifies God’s greatness and His plan for the world through her submission, even amid her confusion. The Magnificat encourages believers to praise God and join in His work of reconciliation and restoration in all aspects of our lives. 

We see God as He truly is—exalted and above all. He is mighty, and His name is holy!

Praise and Adoration. People and Angels.

Angels are a key part of the Christmas story, appearing as messengers of God. When Zechariah was ministering in the Holy Place, the angel Gabriel appeared to announce the birth of a son to Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth (Luke 1:18-19). 

Once again, the angel Gabriel appears to deliver God’s message in the town of Nazareth to a young virgin named Mary.  

"In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary." Luke 1:26-27 

Gabriel greeted Mary with an unusual greeting. You are the favored one. The Lord is with you. Luke tells his readers that Mary was deeply troubled.

"And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30 

Mary was chosen to be the mother of the promised Son. The angel told her that His name would be Jesus. He will be great, Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Mary’s response to the God’s messenger is an example for all of us today. 

"And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her." Luke 1:38

How should we praise the Lord? Why are we commanded to praise Him? The Psalms guide us in this vital part of worship. Specifically, Psalm 100 is a hymn of worship that urges us to thank and praise the Lord. 

"Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing." Psalm 100:1-2 

The psalmist calls for “all the earth” to come before the Great King. The nations must recognize that the Lord is God through His grace and blessings, which sustain His people’s existence. Submission to His rule comes from a joyful and grateful response to His covenant promises. The "gladness" reflects the joy of living in harmony with the Creator, Redeemer, and King.

King David calls the entire assembly to gather in Jerusalem. He contributed from his personal wealth to help build the temple and encouraged others to do the same. 

"Now with all my ability I have provided for the house of my God, the treasure I have … I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holy temple." 1 Chronicles 29:2-3 

The people gave their gifts wholeheartedly. Their hearts were filled with a genuine spirit of worship. David praises God in response to the people’s devotion to the Lord. 

"O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy name, it is from Your hand, and all is Yours. Since I know, O my God, that You try the heart and delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You." 1 Chronicles 29:16-17

The book of Revelation starts with a greeting and a blessing that blend elements of prayer and doxology. These verses strongly praise Jesus Christ (verses 5-6), and verse 7 offers a prophetic statement about His second coming. 

"John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne." Revelation 1:4 

The apostle John (the disciple Jesus loved) is addressing actual, historical churches. He speaks to them in the same way as the New Testament letters. These seven churches represent those from every era since the first century and show common patterns of obedience and disobedience. 

"Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So, it is to be. Amen." Revelation 1:7

A short letter at the end of the New Testament was written by Jude, the half-brother of Jesus, to early Christian believers. Jude finishes this brief epistle with a powerful benediction. 

"But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love." Jude 1:20-21 

This greeting highlights Jude’s personal message and his desire for these believers to strengthen their spiritual walk with God. He encourages them to grow in their faith—praying in the Holy Spirit, remaining in God's love, and eagerly awaiting Jesus's mercy. 

Jude urges us to persevere, and he encourages his readers to keep the hope of the Lord in sight. We have only a short time to wait before we see Jesus, so we must stay faithful to Him.

The Lord encourages us to pray for others and to dedicate time to pray for those who are hurting, struggling, or feeling discouraged. We can thank the Lord for the victories, gifts, and spiritual blessings in each other’s lives. We are meant to support one another. Pray for each other. Celebrate and rejoice together. 

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise." James 5:13 

James shares this: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” What a wonderful privilege! Effective prayer is characterized by earnestness, fervor, and energy to bring about results, as shown in the following verses' case study. 

"Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit." James 5:17-18

Practice to become a powerful prayer person:

The Apostle Paul traveled across Asia Minor and into Europe on three main missionary journeys. During his second trip (Acts 16:23-20:38), he visited Thessalonica and Corinth. The first epistles Paul ever wrote were those to the church he had established in Thessalonica, Macedonia. These were written from Corinth (Acts 18:1-18), shortly after Paul had left Thessalonica. 

"Dear brothers and sisters, we can’t help but thank God for you, because your faith is flourishing and your love for one another is growing. We proudly tell God’s other churches about your endurance and faithfulness in all the persecutions and hardships you are suffering." 1 Thessalonians 1:3-4 

Paul had previously been concerned about their faith and love for each other. In this second letter, he praises them for their growing faith and the increasing love they share. Paul also told others about their faithful perseverance through hardship, suffering, and persecution. 

When we examine early Church history, we gain a clearer understanding. What did believers in Jerusalem and Judea experience after Jesus Christ ascended to heaven? The Jewish religious leaders did not want “The Way” to spread and grow. A man named Saul persecuted them, having some arrested and thrown into prison. This man became Paul after his conversion on the road to Damascus. He personally knew that the church grew during persecution, which makes it even more remarkable. 

"So, we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call. May He give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do." 2 Thessalonians 1:11 

Paul and his companions prayed that the Thessalonians would continue to be purified through their trials rather than stray from the truth. Suffering and persecution can be a great blessing from God and can bring much glory to our Lord Jesus Christ, both now and in the future.

In this lesson, we explore the book of Colossians and review another prayer written by Paul. Once again, he writes this letter from prison in Rome. One unique aspect of his prayer for the believers in Colossae is that he did not establish the church there. 

Instead, a man named Epaphras likely visited Ephesus, where he heard the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and received the gift of salvation. Epaphras then returned to his hometown, Colossae, and started sharing the good news with his friends and fellow citizens. 

Later, Epaphras visited Rome and reported to Paul about the believers’ growth in Colossae. This letter serves as an example for believers to pray for one another. 

"For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people … So, we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you." Colossians 1:4, 9 

Two essential ingredients for knowledge are a divine measure of wisdom and understanding. How you live will honor the Lord's name and please Him. God’s Word transforms lives. 

"Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better." Colossians 1:10 

As believers, we can pray for one another to grow in the knowledge of God and to be filled with the strength of the Lord. It is divine power and strength that enable us to stand against the powers of the dark world (Eph. 6:12).

Paul’s heart rejoices, and he expresses his gratitude. Epaphroditus and others delivered the gift from the Philippians to Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome. They recognized his suffering—awaiting trial before Nero—and wished to demonstrate their care and concern for him. 

"Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles." Philippians 4:14

As their spiritual leader, Paul aims to assist them in developing the “grace of giving.” He uses a business term here—this gift is credited to your account. When they gave a gift to Paul, they gave it to the Lord and His work.

In the Old Testament, various types of sacrifices—incense, grain offerings, and animal sacrifices—were presented to God that pleased and were acceptable to Him. Sacrifices were also given in the New Testament, with the greatest being Christ's offering of Himself for the sins of all mankind. 

"Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:2

In his letter to the believers in Philippi, Paul shares that he prays for them with joy and a grateful heart. He recognizes that they have been partners in the gospel ministry. 

"I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all, making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now." Philippians 1:3-4 

Paul assures them that it is God’s purpose to do a good work in their lives, and His work is meant to shape believers into the image of Jesus Christ. This is God’s work of grace in every believer, and He will complete His work of grace! 

Paul’s prayer is for their love to grow in knowledge and discernment. This will develop the righteous character of Jesus Christ in our lives and bring great glory and praise to God!

Paul boldly shared the Gospel of Jesus and traveled extensively during his ministry. He now writes to the believers in Ephesus from a prison in Rome. He assures the Ephesians that he always remembers them in his prayers—both with gratitude and intercession.

"For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers." Ephesians 1:15-16 

Paul received news that their faith and love continued to grow. He tells them he prays that God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, will give them spiritual wisdom and insight.

Paul wants them to understand the incredible power of God. Divine power was clearly shown in Jesus Christ's resurrection and His exaltation to the position of authority—He sits at the right hand of His Heavenly Father. Because of Christ, the Church is made whole and complete.

"I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe in Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 1:18-19

In Acts 3 and 4, Luke describes Peter’s bold testimony for Jesus after he heals a crippled man at the Beautiful Gate. That afternoon at the temple, thousands of people heard the message and believed in the name of Jesus. Peter and John were arrested and kept in prison overnight before being brought before the Sanhedrin early the next morning. 

"They were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand." Acts 4:2-4 

As Peter addressed the religious leaders, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke truth. Peter experiences a special moment of inspiration that clearly highlights the person of Jesus Christ and the work of God's Spirit. The Sanhedrin warned Peter and John “not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.” 

But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:19-20

The church's response to the apostles' release was an immediate outpouring of praise and prayer. Most importantly, these early Christians were not praying for relief from oppression but for the ability "to speak Your word with great boldness" amid persecution and for God to act with mighty power. 

The focus of these new believers was on spreading God's word and glorifying Christ's name. Luke clearly made sure to include this prayer so that it can serve as a pattern for us to follow in our own prayers. 

"But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, all because of my name. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand about how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict." Luke 21:12-15

Reading in the book of Acts, just before Jesus ascended into heaven, He spoke these words:

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) 

His disciples and new followers of the Way have remained in Jerusalem, teaching, sharing fellowship with each other, and praying together. 

"Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple." Acts 3:1-2 

Peter and John were leading the new group of believers in Jerusalem. These men led by example. The early Jewish Christians continued to follow their former habits of worship in Jerusalem. 

The lame man had been in his condition for over 40 years (4:22). Moreover, he had to be carried by others. It was clearly a hopeless case. Almost everyone in Jerusalem would have known this beggar since he sat at an entrance to the temple for a long time. 

"And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God." Acts 3:8 

Peter testified to the power and presence of God's Spirit working in a new way in people's lives through Jesus. Now, he proclaims the power and authority of Jesus' name, by which His disciples were able to continue his ministry on earth.

In this high priestly prayer, Jesus first prays to the Father for His glorification and His soon return to heaven. The second part is His prayer for the Eleven Disciples, asking for their protection and sanctification. Finally, Jesus prays for future believers (John 17:20-26). 

As Jesus considered future followers who would believe in Him through the testimony of the Eleven, He asked His Father for two things: unity and glorification. 

II pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me." John 17:21 

The purpose of this unity is so that the world might believe that the Father sent the Son, meaning that Jesus is God's Son. The display of mutual love among Jesus' disciples demonstrates that they are His followers. Their love for one another shows that they genuinely follow His teachings and have His life. 

"I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them." John 17:26

Closing Thoughts … 

·      Jesus glorified the Father on earth. 

·      He completed the work that the Father had given Him to do. 

·      He revealed the Father’s name to His own. 

·      Jesus shared the Father’s words with the disciples. 

·      He cared for them just like the Good Shepherd cares for His sheep. 

·      He sent them out into the world. 

·      Holy Father, guard those You have given Me.

Jesus delivered this powerful prayer on the evening before He was betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. Some believe He was in the Upper Room, while others think He was on the Southern Steps of the temple as they walked toward the garden. Jesus’ purpose and focus was to bring glory to His Heavenly Father. 

In the second part of this prayer, Jesus expresses His concern for the disciples. This is the longest section of His prayer. He knows they will face intense spiritual battles. The disciples spent three years with Jesus during His earthly ministry. The disciples watched Jesus perform many miracles, and they listened to His powerful teachings. 

"Now I am coming to You. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so that they would be filled with My joy. I have given them Your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I’m not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do." John 17:13-16

Jesus came to earth with the message of God's love and forgiveness. He faced trials, danger, and death on the cross. The disciples would encounter many of the same challenges. Jesus did not ask the Father to remove them from danger or trials, but instead asked the Father to protect them from the evil one. Their mission was to proclaim the Good News to the whole world.

Today, we start a study of Jesus’ prayer in John 17. This prayer is often called “Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer.” It illustrates the high priestly ministry that Jesus officially began when He ascended into heaven.

"My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." 1 John 2:1

Many believe this was spoken before Jesus and His small group of disciples left the Upper Room or while they walked across the Southern Steps on their way to the Garden of Gethsemane.

"After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you." John 17:1 

Jesus looks toward His Father in heaven and prays. He acknowledges that the time of crisis has come – “The hour has come.” This is not a hopeless prayer; instead, Jesus looks ahead to the cross and recognizes that this is the work the Father has given Him. Jesus alone can complete this task.

"I brought glory to You here on earth by completing the work You gave me to do. Now, Father, bring Me into the glory We shared before the world began." John 17:4-5

During His earthly ministry, Jesus spent time praying, and the disciples asked Him how they should pray. 

"Once, Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus said, “This is how you should pray." Luke 11:1-2 

He has given us an example, a pattern to follow. We approach our Heavenly Father, acknowledge His holiness, and remember the promise of His coming kingdom. 

"Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." Matthew 6:10 

Jesus then taught that we can bring our needs and struggles to our Father in prayer. We can ask for what we need and for provisions. We confess our sins and offer forgiveness to others. Finally, it is important to stay alert against the schemes of the evil one and ask the Lord for His protection and strength during times of testing. 

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Do you remember when you first memorized The Lord’s Prayer? How old were you?

As children of God, we have a personal connection with our Heavenly Father. Each of us can approach Him to share our requests and burdens. He is holy and deserving of our praise.

The Kingdom of God is a fundamental concept in Christian theology, representing God’s rule and authority over His creation, especially among believers. It represents God's presence and power, both now and in the future. During His earthly ministry, Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God. People’s lives are transformed and renewed as they turn away from their sin and follow God’s will.

They listened to His teachings, witnessed His miracles, and heard Him pray. Many times, He would go off to pray in the evening or early morning hours. 

In today's lesson, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. He responds with the prayer we often call The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-15) or The Disciples’ Prayer (Luke 11:2-4). This prayer is the example or model Jesus gave to His disciples. 

One day, Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of his disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name.’” Luke 11:1-2 

God's "name" reflects His nature. Jesus called God His Father. We also call Him our Heavenly Father to give Him glory and praise. 

"But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy." 1 Peter 1:15

We look for lessons and examples from Scripture to guide our walk with God. In the first part of this series, “The Power of Prayer,” we examined many examples from the Old Testament. Now, we turn to the pages of the New Testament. In today’s lesson, we will explore Jesus’ words in Matthew 6. 

Jesus warns the disciples about hypocrisy. Yes, we are to live righteous lives, but “Watch out!” 

“You are the light of the world … let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:14-16). We are to perform good deeds openly in front of a watching world, not for our praise, but to draw attention to our Heavenly Father and give Him glory!

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others." Matthew 6:5

Again, “Do not be like the hypocrites.” He references the Pharisees and Sadducees, the two main religious groups. They are obsessed with what others think of them. They seek recognition for their “good and righteous acts.”

We pray for the same reasons children talk to their parents. We share concerns. We have a relationship and seek fellowship. We want help when facing tough times and confusing situations in life. Children need the wisdom of a Father and Mother. 

"Lord, hear my prayer! Listen to my plea! Do not turn away from me in my time of distress. Bend down to listen and answer me quickly when I call to you." Psalm 102:1-2

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 27 – Prayer of David (NIV).

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 

3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. 4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

Jesus often used parables to teach His disciples and followers. Today, we will examine one of His lessons about prayer from His earthly ministry. 

In this parable, a neighbor knocks on his friend’s door at midnight and asks for three loaves of bread. Wow! This seems like a daring and bold act. However, Jesus uses this short story to teach some essential lessons about our prayer requests to the Father in heaven. 

"And so, I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you." Luke 11:9 (NLT) 

In this parable, Jesus encouraged His followers to be persistent. Keep asking. Our Heavenly Father is not bothered by our requests—no matter the time of day. No matter how many times we have asked Him. We often hesitate to be truly bold in prayer because we don’t want to seem demanding or presumptuous. Surprisingly, Jesus tells us to come with bold prayer requests. 

"So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most." Hebrews 4:16

Two women, cousins, were brought together by God’s sovereign plan. In Luke 1, the young betrothed Mary quickly travels to the home of Elizabeth and stays with her for three months. Elizabeth welcomes her with words of blessing. 

"And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb.

And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!'” Luke 1:41-42 

The word 'blessed' means to be especially favored because of God’s grace. Mary was most blessed because her Son would be blessed, and He is the greatest blessing ever given to all people. 

Mary visited Elizabeth, an older, godly woman. Their time together was filled with praise and prayer. Elizabeth shared wise words, comfort, and encouragement. Mary gave glory to God for His power, holiness, and mercy. 

"And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked on the humble estate of His servant.'” Luke 1:46-48

An inspired leader, Nehemiah, served as King Artaxerxes’ cupbearer in Persia when an envoy delivered the report of Jerusalem’s distress. Nehemiah's initial response to the discouraging news about Jerusalem's condition was emotional. He then turned his face to the Lord and cried out in prayer. 

"When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. Then I said, 'O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people, Israel.'” Nehemiah 1:4-6 

However, the enemies surrounding Jerusalem tried to discourage, mock, and deny their right to the city. Nehemiah responded with firm confidence in the God of heaven and reported that the people in Jerusalem would start rebuilding the wall. 

We conclude this lesson with the prayer in Chapter Nine. This is one of the great prayers of the Old Testament. It praises God for His character and His conduct. 

“Stand up and praise the Lord your God, for he lives from everlasting to everlasting!”

"Then they prayed: 'May your glorious name be praised! May it be exalted above all blessing and praise! You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you.'” Nehemiah 9:5-6

You might be familiar with the story of Job in the Old Testament. This man faced profound loss and suffering, and in chapter 42, Job makes a heartfelt confession of his folly. 

"Then Job answered the Lord and said: 'I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.'" Job 42:1-2 

Job acknowledges that he spoke without knowledge and understanding. He now holds a deeper spiritual insight. He views both God and himself more realistically. Job had previously expressed remorse for his losses, but now he mourns his sins. He has changed his mind and released his rebellious pride and arrogance toward God.

"I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore, I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Job 42:5-6

In this season, The Power of Prayer, we have explored the prayers of many different people. Today, let’s take a closer look at the words of Jeremiah found in the book of Lamentations. This prayer is more than just a lament; he asks the Lord to remember the plight of His people and to restore them to their promised covenant blessings. 

"Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace!" Lamentations 5:1 

Life without the comfort and encouragement of God is “desolate and barren.” God forgives and restores us in a personal relationship with Him, but there will be consequences for our disobedience and sin. He genuinely desires to bring His children to restoration – a true and authentic change of heart.

"Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old." Lamentations 5:21

In the book of Jonah, we learn about God’s assignment for His prophet, Jonah. He was to go to the wicked people of Nineveh and proclaim God’s impending judgment upon them. Jonah decided to flee from God, so he boarded a boat in Joppa and set sail toward Tarshish. God sent a violent storm upon the sea, and the pagan sailors hurled Jonah into the turbulent waters.

"And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights." Jonah 1:17 

The Lord rescued Jonah from drowning. A great fish swallowed him, and Jonah sat in its belly for three days and three nights. During that time, he must have engaged in a lot of soul-searching and reflection about his decision to disobey God. He began to pray and call out to the Lord. 

"I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice." Jonah 2:2

We can always pray to God – at any time and in any place. He wants to listen to us. We can cry out from the deep pit of disobedience and rebellion.  

"When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you." Jonah 2:7

Daniel was a man of prayer and set a godly example for us. He studied the historical scriptures and prayed to the Lord faithfully every day. 

He approaches the Lord based on God’s loyal, covenant-keeping hesed love, which promised a covenant relationship with Israel. In chapter nine, Daniel confesses both his sin and the sins of Israel to the Lord. Israel had transgressed against the law of the Lord and refused to obey His commands. 

"While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice." Daniel 9:20-21 

“The man Gabriel” suggests that this mighty archangel appeared in a human-like form and spoke to Daniel clearly, as one man speaks to another. Gabriel serves as a messenger from God, delivering messages and explanations to Daniel. 

"He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision." Daniel 9:22-23

Gabriel conveys a message filled with hope and promise. He assures Daniel of God's great love and pledges to provide him with insight and understanding.

Season 19: The Power of Prayer

Daniel was a man dedicated to prayer. In previous lessons, we have examined two other instances when Daniel turned to the Lord and sought His wisdom and counsel. He was not afraid of the king; rather, he chose to continue his regular daily practice: “I will pray to the Lord three times each day.”

"I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So, I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes." Daniel 9:2-3

In the following sixteen verses, Daniel associates himself with the people of Israel and confesses their sin and disobedience. He acknowledges the greatness, lovingkindness, and mercy of the Lord. 

"Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of Your servant. For Your sake, Lord, look with favor on Your desolate sanctuary. Give ear, our God, and hear; open Your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears Your Name. We do not make requests of You because we are righteous, but because of Your great mercy. Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act!" Daniel 9:17-19

Daniel cried out with fervent prayer to the Lord on behalf of his people. He has provided a powerful example of prayer for each of us.

Daniel was an amazing man who believed in the power of fervent prayer. The more we study his life, the more we are challenged by his commitment to the Lord and his faithful prayer life. He was taken captive to Babylon as a young teenager and served there for over 60 years. In this historical episode, he learns that the king has signed a decree stating that no one should pray to any god or man for thirty days, except to King Darius. 

"Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him to criticize or condemn. He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy." Daniel 6:3-4

The text does not explain why the other officials wanted to remove Daniel. Perhaps his integrity made it difficult for them to engage in bribery, fraud, and political corruption. They knew Daniel was a God-fearing man who did not worship pagan idols, so they devised a plan to trap him.

"When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house, where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously." Daniel 6:10 

Daniel’s choice: obey his God or the government. It was very clear to Daniel that he would obey God. The new decree did not deter him! He would continue to pray three times each day for the city’s welfare and give thanks before his God! 

Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” Daniel 6:16

Daniel was a man of fervent prayer. He was taken captive to Babylon and served there for over 60 years. In this first historical episode, he learns that the king had a dream and wants to know both the dream and its interpretation. The wise men of the court cannot reveal this information to the king. 

The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” Daniel 2:10-11

Daniel learns of the king’s harsh order—kill all the wise men—and requests time to find a solution to the king’s dilemma. He returns to his house, calls his friends—Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah—and asks them to join him in prayer. 

"He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon." Daniel 2:18 

They asked for God's compassion to manifest through a revelation of the king's dream and its interpretation to Daniel. God revealed the secret mystery to Daniel. He believed this vision was an answer to their fervent prayers. 

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king's matter.” Daniel 2:20-23

What is prayer? How do we pray? Does God hear our prayers? Does He answer our prayers? 

Have you ever pleaded with God for something? Today, we will share two personal stories with you. God does answer prayers, and we have personally experienced this in our lives.

"Hear my prayer, Lord; let my cry for help come to you. Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly." Psalm 102:1-2

In this current season, we have considered the prayers of people in the Bible—leaders, women, and kings. There are moments in life when we lose hope, feel overwhelmed, confront terminal illness, find ourselves surrounded by destruction, and face inevitable defeat. Where do we turn, and how do we navigate these challenging times?

King Hezekiah was the king of Judah who reigned in Jerusalem and walked with God. The mighty Assyrian army threatened to destroy the city, while their king, Sennacherib, mocked the Lord God. 

"And he (Hezekiah) did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done." 2 Kings 18:3

During this time, King Hezekiah suffered from a terminal illness. The prophet Isaiah visited his bedchamber and declared that he would die. Upon hearing these words, Hezekiah prayed to the Lord.

"Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, saying, “Now, O Lord, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly." 2 Kings 20:2-3

King Hezekiah exemplifies his reliance on Yahweh. He approaches the Lord when the king of Assyria threatens Jerusalem. He cries out to the Lord when the prophet Isaiah informs him that he will die from his illness. God demonstrates His power to answer the prayers of a defeated, discouraged, and ill king who is facing certain death.

This is true in our lives. This is our God! He may not choose to heal us physically, but He is more than capable, and indeed, all who trust in Him will spend eternity with Him, healed and whole.

King David’s prayer of gratitude offers us a significant lesson. He sat before the Lord and prayed, demonstrating humility in his posture while acknowledging the many good gifts and blessings bestowed upon him. David also pours out praise for his Sovereign Lord, who is holy, merciful, and gracious.

“How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!” 2 Samuel 7:22

God’s greatness overwhelms David. He has performed great wonders! His name is exalted! God chose to bless David despite his sins because, ultimately, David sought to glorify God and serve Him with his life. God extends life and His unfailing love to each of us. 

“Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.” Isaiah 55:3

Prayer is an essential part of our spiritual journey. Scripture is filled with examples of prayer and praying people. 

Today’s lesson is Hannah’s prayer and praise for the Lord’s answer to her petition. She rejoices and takes great delight in Him. Hannah found her strength in the Lord. He miraculously delivered her from barrenness by giving her a son and turning her weeping into rejoicing.

Then Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the Lord! The Lord has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because You rescued me. No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God." 1 Samuel 2:1-2

As Hannah offers this prayer to the Lord, she boldly acknowledges God's sovereignty and celebrates His holiness. The heart of this prayer is the importance of trusting in the Lord. Hannah exemplified this, and her faith led to a miraculous blessing from God.

Prayer is an essential part of our spiritual journey. Scripture is filled with examples of prayer and praying people. These individuals were not perfect, yet they sought the Lord. 

The Lord is the Everlasting God. His name—Yahweh—expresses His desire to establish a covenant relationship with His chosen people. He is the One True God and is eternal. 

God’s clock is not like ours! A thousand years feel like a fleeting day or just a few hours at night. He exists eternally in relation to time. However, we are mortals, constrained by time. 

Teach us to understand life's brevity, so that we may grow in wisdom (hokmah—the practical skill, discernment, and ability to live a life that pleases God, encompassing both spiritual and worldly aspects). 

"May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands." Psalm 90:17 (NIV)

We are excited to explore the prayers of individuals in the Bible in our new series, The Power of Prayer. Today, we will look closely at Joshua 10:12-14. A faithful leader offered a bold prayer. God heard his request, suspended the laws of nature, and granted the Israelites a miraculous victory! 

"At that time, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance on their enemies." Joshua 10:12-13

The prayer of Joshua serves as a powerful expression of faith, showcasing a wise leader and illustrating God's sovereignty and divine intervention. 

God answered Joshua's prayer by causing the sun and moon to stand still. This prolonged the day and allowed the Israelites to achieve their victory. 

Do you often "talk to the Lord?” Joshua had a close, personal relationship with the Lord and communicated with Him openly! We can learn valuable lessons from Joshua's life.

In this new series, The Power of Prayer, we are excited to explore the prayers of people in the Bible. This lesson will examine Exodus 15, where God provided a miraculous escape for the Israelites as they crossed the Red Sea while Egyptian chariots closed in on them. 

The Lord hurled Pharaoh’s army of chariots into the sea and delivered the Israelites. With praise and celebration, Moses and his sister, Miriam, led the people in a powerful praise service.

The entire community unites to praise the Lord. They recognize God’s strength, salvation, and His mighty right hand. The Lord is awesome, holy, and majestic, performing mighty wonders.

In this new series, The Power of Prayer, we are excited to explore the prayers of people in the Bible. Today, we look closer at the stirring prayer of young King Solomon at the beginning of his reign. 

Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar at Gibeon. That night, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” 1 Kings 3:4-5 

King Solomon dedicated himself and offered his genuine worship to Yahweh. God’s response was to bless Solomon. He acknowledged God’s goodness and faithfulness and his dependence on God.

"Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:9

Solomon requested an understanding heart, acknowledging that governing God’s chosen people was an immense challenge.

Wisdom is invaluable; however, godliness holds far greater significance.

This is the beginning of a new “Walk with God” season. Prayer is an essential topic for believers. Ask this question, “What is Prayer?” The simple answer is spiritual communication between man and God. 

In this lesson, we will examine three parts of David’s prayer: 

1.        Praise & the blessing of God (vv. 10b-13) 

2.        Perspective on their utter dependence on the Yahweh whose greatness has just been proclaimed (vv. 14-17) 

3.        Petition (vv. 18-19) 

First, David’s praise was public. Although praise is usually more private, in this case, his official words needed to be heard and heeded by everyone!

The God of Israel is our Father. He is eternal and exists “forever and ever.” 

David’s praise recognized that all things belong to Israel’s great God. This principle forms the foundation of the doctrine of stewardship. ‘Everything’ we possess ‘comes from’ and belongs to God. 

Our devotion to the Lord is evident in our gifts to Him. David desires that his people have hearts truly and wholly dedicated to God.

David’s Prayer of Praise: 

"O Lord, our God, may You be praised forever and ever! 

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. 

Everything in the heavens and on earth is Yours. 

We adore You as the one who is over all things. 

Wealth and honor come from You alone. You rule over everything. 

Power and might are in Your hands. 

Our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name!"

The Book of Philippians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Philippi. Paul deeply loves these brothers and sisters, who have been his partners in spreading the Gospel message. He extends the grace and peace of Christ to them. Paul desires to see these believers again, but he is uncertain about the outcome of his trial before Nero in Rome. 

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21 

Paul reminds his readers to reflect on Jesus’ example: Jesus Christ humbled Himself as a servant and died a criminal's death. He encourages us to “press on.” Even though we have not yet achieved perfection, we will be spiritually perfected when we are welcomed into heaven. 

"Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14

Paul concludes his letter with a beautiful doxology and benediction.

"And to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen." Philippians 4:21

Paul’s heart rejoices, and he expresses his gratitude. Epaphroditus and others delivered the gift from the Philippians to Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome. They recognized his suffering—awaiting trial before Nero—and wished to demonstrate their care and concern for him. 

"Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles." Philippians 4:14

As their spiritual leader, Paul aims to assist them in developing the “grace of giving.” He uses a business term here—this gift is credited to your account. When they gave a gift to Paul, they gave it to the Lord and His work.

In the Old Testament, various types of sacrifices—incense, grain offerings, and animal sacrifices—were presented to God that pleased and were acceptable to Him. Sacrifices were also given in the New Testament, with the greatest being Christ's offering of Himself for the sins of all mankind.

What brings you joy? Are there specific moments when your heart feels joyful?

Paul uses "rejoice" in the book of Philippians 7 times and "joy" 5 times.

"I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it." Philippians 4:10

The Philippian church had encouraged and financially supported Paul earlier in his ministry. Once again, they ministered to Paul, and he expressed his joy and gratitude to them.

Paul wants them to understand that he has learned to be content in every circumstance of his life. Contentment is not natural for most of us; it must be learned and experienced over time.

Paul identifies the source of his sufficiency as being “in Christ,” who grants strength to believers. He had learned to trust God in every circumstance.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

As Paul concludes his letter to the believers in Philippi, he urges them to apply these teachings in their lives.

·      "Do not be anxious. Pray about everything."

·      "Give thanks for all He has done." 

"Then, you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds." Philippians 4:7 (NLT)

The believers in Philippi had learned and received many valuable lessons from Paul, their teacher. They had personally heard his teaching and witnessed his example. Paul urged them to apply these teachings in their daily lives. 

"Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8

The most challenging area of sin in a believer's life is not the sphere of actions but the discipline of thought. Dr. Dwight Pentecost

In chapter one, Paul tells us that he is writing from prison, most likely in Rome, where the wicked Emperor Nero reigned. While it may seem easy to rejoice from a place of safety and comfort, Paul can rejoice because of his deep relationship with the Lord. 

There will be attacks from the world and personality clashes among believers; nonetheless, Christians are called to maintain a spirit of joy in the Lord. We are not immune to sorrow, discouragement, or pain, nor should we be insensitive to the troubles of others. However, we should view God's will as our highest joy and thus be able to experience inner peace and joy in every circumstance. 

"Keep your gentle nature so that all people will know what it looks like to walk in His footsteps. The Lord is ever present with us." Philippians 4:5 (The Voice) 

Paul argues that believers cannot find true happiness without striving to bless others. To encourage his readers, Paul reminds them that "the Lord is near." This establishes a crucial link between having a longsuffering, gentle spirit and the reality of the Lord's presence with us. 

We are called to prayer instead of sitting in our anxious thoughts and worrying. The phrase "the peace of God" does not appear elsewhere in the New Testament. This peace comes from God. It envelops us when we pray, allowing us to experience the tranquility of God's presence. We cannot fully comprehend this peace or its release from the pressure and strain of our circumstances.

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

Season 18: Partners in the Gospel

SCRIPTURE: Philippians 4:1-4

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul reminds them that they are his close friends. He regards them as brothers and sisters. We read his passionate appeal to them: Live in unity and be steadfast in your walk with God! 

"Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!" Philippians 4:1

After this strong expression of care and affection, Paul highlights a conflict between two women. While he does not specify the issue, Paul names both women. He also requests a respected leader in Philippi to assist these women in restoring fellowship and unity. 

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4

Paul was not urging Christians to be unrealistic or to never feel sad—even Jesus wept (John 11:35) at the tomb of Lazarus. However, he encouraged us to focus on our blessings in Christ and to be grateful for them, no matter how sad we may feel at any given moment.

Paul expresses affection for his readers several times in chapter three of Philippians. 

"Dear brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us." Philippians 3:17 

His invitation is not prideful but reflects his personal journey with the Lord over the past few decades. Paul has faced many trials, endured much suffering, and confronted significant challenges in life. He is a bit further along the path and encourages them to follow his example and those of Timothy and Epaphroditus.

In verses 18 and 19, Paul expresses strong emotion as he warns against those who “walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.” Do not follow these people! Their minds are set on earthly things, but we are citizens of heaven, and we are eager for Him to return as our Savior.

"He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control." Philippians 3:21

As we begin today’s passage, remember that Paul is not looking at his Damascus Road conversion and saying, “I’ve arrived.” For Paul and each of us, the spiritual life is a journey, and we should seek to progress in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We want to know Him better. 

"Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own because Christ Jesus has made me his own." Philippians 3:12

Progress, not perfection. Paul encourages us to “press on.” We have not yet attained perfection. We will be spiritually perfected only when we are promoted to heaven. 

Many of us are familiar with this famous quote – 

“I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am.” - John Newton

Worship is a way to show God that we love Him and recognize Him as our Creator, Lord, Savior, and Redeemer. It also allows us to express gratitude for all He has done—His great and mighty deeds. 

King David’s song of praise in 1 Chronicles 16 offers words of worship and guides our thoughts toward honoring the Lord. This praise song, which reflects several psalms, begins with a call to worship that includes the nations. Worship embodies our declaration of God's greatness and glory.

This hymn emphasizes God's deeds, words, greatness, and worth. Worship should focus on God rather than on man. In this New Year, let’s encourage one another in the spiritual discipline of worship. The Lord God Almighty deserves our praise and worship!

Christmas looks different for everyone around the world. Whether you live in a small town or a large city, your Christmas traditions are likely distinct from those in my family. Yet, many centuries ago, the angels announced this message to the shepherds: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

In this podcast, Brenda shares phrases from the renowned poem “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Despite being surrounded by tragedy and sorrow, Longfellow's words of hope flowed from his pen, and today, we sing the song inspired by his poem.

What do you truly value in life? The apostle Paul had an impressive resume and presented seven significant points in Philippians 3:5-6. However, he then writes this statement for his readers.

"But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ." Philippians 3:7 

Paul had to unlearn much of what he once took pride in, as all these separate gains had become worthless. What Paul had previously viewed as "gain" was now lost because of his personal relationship with Christ. Additionally, a significant shift occurred in the focus of his life. 

"So that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ." Philippians 3:8b-9a

Paul recognized the importance of knowing Jesus, which includes both intellectual and heartfelt understanding. To gain a deeper insight into Christ, Paul sacrificed everything else in his life. God attributes the righteousness of Christ to anyone who places their trust in Him. Paul encourages us to approach the Father and attain righteousness through our faith in Christ.

In the book of Philippians, Paul praises the believers in Philippi and calls them to unity as they share the gospel of Jesus Christ. He reminds them that the key to achieving unity is for each one to adopt Christ's humility. Paul also speaks of joy and rejoicing despite the opposition of others. 

"But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy." Philippians 2:17-18

In the opening verses of chapter three, Paul warns his readers about the Judaizers, who emphasized the importance of circumcision. These leaders believed it was a prerequisite for justification (Acts 15:1).

Without life-changing faith, circumcision is merely an outward sign without an inward reality. Similarly, baptism without life-changing faith is just a submersion in water. We should be cautious of those who focus only on the external. (See 1 Samuel 16:7)

Paul adopted the Judaizers' attitude of confidence in the flesh to strengthen his argument. He did this to demonstrate that his rejection of Jewish advantages was not due to a lack of them in his life.  

"Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also, if anyone else thinks he has a reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more …" Philippians 3:4

What does it mean to do the work of Christ? To serve the Lord? Jesus came to serve, and He paid the ultimate price... on the cross... for our sins. Out of gratitude for His unspeakable gift, we serve Him and live our lives to bring glory to God. 

"But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. I hope, therefore, to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. " Philippians 2:22-24 

How has Timothy proven worth? His faithful service to Jesus Christ. Paul offered kind and truthful words of commendation for his ministry partner, Timothy. Now, he speaks to them about one of their church leaders, Epaphroditus.  

"So, receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. " Philippians 2:29-30

In these verses, Paul strongly commends Timothy and Epaphroditus. They have served, suffered, and fought for the Gospel message. Receive them with great joy!

Paul offers wise words of instruction for his dear friends in Philippi. The first word, therefore, ties us back to the example of Christ’s obedience (2:5-11). As the believers in Philippi considered what this message meant to them, Paul gave them a challenging command. The Philippians would have to learn to stand on their own two feet spiritually, whether Paul returned to be with them or if his life was taken in Rome. 

"Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent " Philippians 2:14-15

How do we act? What do we say to God and others? Do we grumble, complain, and murmur? Many times, we have an argumentative spirit or attitude. 

When the Israelites were in the wilderness, they grumbled and murmured, arguing with and challenging Moses. “What have you done? You’ve brought us into the wilderness to die. It would have been better for us to stay in Egypt.” 

"Holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain." Philippians 2:16

These people are brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul was sent to Philippi to share the Good News of Jesus, and they received the gift of salvation. Paul encourages them to live boldly and shine brightly.

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men." Philippians 2:5-7 

Jesus, the Eternal Son, became a servant and submitted to His Father's will. When He was tired, He needed to sleep. He ate food when He was hungry. These are aspects of His humility. His appearance did not provide visual clues that He was sinless or divine. 

"He (Jesus) humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross." Philippians 2:8

Jesus was humiliated by wicked rulers and religious authorities, and they sentenced Him to a cruel death on the cross. He fulfilled the will of His Father when He faced death by crucifixion, a form of execution that was without equal in its pain and humiliation.

Given the Son's submission, God the Father raised Him to the heights of glory. Jesus received great exaltation and a name that corresponds to His position. Every person will bow in submission to His authority.

Philippians is Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi—beloved friends and partners in the Gospel. We are working our way through chapter two, and we’ll begin with verse 5 today. This paragraph (verses 5-11) is the most important one in the epistle and the most difficult to interpret.

"You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had." Philippians 2:5 

The simple thought here is, “Make Me Like Jesus!” Paul explains what he meant when presenting the concept of humility, namely, the example of Jesus Christ. He wanted the Philippian believers (and this includes us) to remember that the very quality he had advocated in 2:1-4, a humble unity, was observable in the Lord Jesus.

"… who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped." Philippians 2:6 

Now for the “hard theology” of this passage! The Son of God’s pre-incarnate state is clearly in view in verse 6. Jesus is — was—and will always be God! 

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God." John 1:1-2 

In God’s perfect plan of the incarnation, the Son of God left heaven and came to live on the earth as a man—fully God, fully man. 

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

Paul urges the Philippians to live a life that pleases the Lord and brings glory to His name. In addition, Paul wants believers to walk in unity and “be steadfast.” 

All believers should embrace humility as the foundation for unity. How do we live? How do we walk with the Lord? 

·      Is there encouragement from belonging to Christ? Yes, there is. 

·      Is there any comfort from His love? Yes, there is. 

·      Is there any fellowship together in the Spirit? Yes, there is. 

·      Are your hearts tender and compassionate? This is a sign of a new heart and a new spirit. 

"And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart." Ezekiel 36:26

Paul informs these believers that his joy will be complete when they function together in unity. He instructs them to have the “same mind, same love, and one mind.”  

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12:10

Paul wrote this letter to encourage and instruct the church at Philippi. These people have been partners in the Gospel for more than ten years. 

Paul’s words challenge us to live every day in a manner worthy of Christ's gospel. He encourages believers to be united—"stand firm, in one spirit, with one mind, side by side.” 

"Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel." Philippians 1:27  

Lord, give us the courage to stand against the enemy and endure suffering for the sake of Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote the book of Philippians while he was sitting in a Roman prison waiting for his trial before Caesar. We do not have many details about Paul’s imprisonment, but he was facing an incredible ordeal. However, Paul’s perspective as he awaits his trial and the outcome is a powerful example. 

Paul wasn’t concerned about others' motives (their jealousy, desire for power, or position). The most important priority for Paul’s life and ministry was sharing the message of Jesus Christ and the free gift of salvation. Paul’s response, “I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice!” 

"For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death." Philippians 1:19-20

Paul reminds us that our prayers are important and necessary. Believers united in prayer for each other. Perhaps you have a prayer journal where you keep requests for other people. When the Lord reminds you of someone’s prayer need, stop and pray for them by name. 

"If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose, I cannot tell. I am hard-pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account." Philippians 1:22-24

Paul believed the Lord still had ministry and work for him to complete here on the earth. This would be fruitful labor for Paul. Therefore, he is “convinced” that he would remain and continue the ministry. Paul has a servant’s heart and desires people to know the Lord and live for God’s glory!

Paul shared his bold testimony of the Gospel of Christ even though he was imprisoned in Rome. His example and perspective spurred others to share the Good News. 

"I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ." Philippians 1:12-13 

Paul’s desire was for the gospel message to advance—to the Jew and then to the Gentile—and to all of the world. When we share the Good News, we must guard our hearts from jealousy and selfish ambition. Ask the Lord to purify your motives and keep you humble as you endeavor to serve the Lord. 

"What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice." Philippians 1:18 

Give us confidence and greater boldness to share the gospel. It is all about You and the sacrifice You made for us. We rejoice when Christ is proclaimed!

"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6 (NASB1995)

It is the Lord who does the spiritual work in every believer. A number of theological terms describe the relationship we have with God from the moment we receive Jesus until we come into His presence.

Justification – We are declared righteous because of Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross. By faith in Christ, our sin is forgiven.

Sanctification – Daily, we are being conformed to the likeness of Christ, growing in Him & displaying the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Glorification – The believer’s full realization and perfection of salvation.

"For this … mortal must put on immortality. But when ... this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:53-54 (NASB1995)

Warren Wiersbe shares this insight. “Paul uses three thoughts in Philippians 1:1-11 that describe true Christian fellowship.

I have you in my mind (1:3-6)

I have you in my heart (1:7-8)

I have you in my prayers (1:9-11)

"And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." Season 18: Partners in the Gospel

The book of Philippians is Paul’s thank-you letter to the church at Philippi. He has great affection for the people who have partnered with him in the Lord’s ministry, and this is another opportunity for Paul to encourage the believers. He greets them with these words, “May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.” (Philippians 1:2)

A small city, Philippi was a Roman colony. Paul and his mission team were specifically called from Asia Minor (current day Turkey) to Macedonia. They immediately departed and, a few days later, arrived in Philippi.

A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them … setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. (Acts 16:9-12) 

Paul met Lydia, the seller of purple, and a group of women praying by the river. After hearing the Gospel message, she and her house believed and were baptized. Following a conflict in the marketplace, Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. God sent an earthquake that night, and the doors were opened, and their chains unfastened. Everyone in the prison that night saw God’s mighty power. 

You have been my partners in spreading the Gospel from the day you first heard it until now. Philippians 1:5

The Book of Proverbs teaches moral and ethical principles which will lead to a wise life. The word “wisdom” (hokmāh) occurs 48 times in this book. The words “wisdom and instruction” (1:2a) complement each other because “wisdom” includes the idea of “skill” in living. The word for “instruction means “discipline.” No “skill” in living can be developed or perfected without “discipline.” 

The final chapter in Proverbs offers sound words of advice – a mother to her son, the king. And, the closing verses share a beautiful portrait of a godly and wise woman. 

"She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise. She guards her tongue, and she gives instructions with kindness." Proverbs 31:25-26

These words of instruction are valuable for both men and women to practice daily. Choose words carefully. Guard our tongues and speak with kindness. The Lord is our strength, and He will direct our steps.

The Book of Proverbs is filled with wise sayings and uses repetition as a teaching tool. In chapter 29, the conjunction "but" connects ideas that contrast each other. 

"When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, BUT when a wicked man rules, people groan." Proverbs 29:2

As we work through these verses, pay attention to the contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. When we have righteous hearts and walk with God, we will show care and concern for others. 

We can learn more about the Lord daily by studying His Word, praying, and meditating on Scripture verses. In chapter 30, the author admits that he has not acquired wisdom and does not know God well. He recognizes God’s word is true and pure. 

"Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him." Proverbs 30:5

"Consider the small creatures of this world, for they are remarkably wise: ants, rock badgers, locusts, and lizards." (Proverbs 30:24-28). These simple beings offer valuable lessons to each of us.

The Book of Proverbs provides wise counsel and instruction for righteous living. Chapters 27 and 28 include many wise sayings for us to “chew on,” ponder, and meditate on. The depth of insight and knowledge in these two chapters provides guidance and direction for each of us. 

"Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

It is our sincere desire to be righteous people. We cannot live righteously without the help of the Holy Spirit and Your strength and guidance. Fill us with Your wisdom and direct us according to Your perfect wisdom and purpose for our lives. 

"Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all things." Proverbs 28:5 

The heart reflects the true nature of a person. By examining our heart attitudes, we gain genuine self-awareness. Seek the Lord, and He will guide and direct your steps.

The book of Proverbs provides insight and guidance for relationships, including how to interact with kings, neighbors, enemies, fools, and sluggards. 

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear." Proverbs 25:11-12 

Our words can encourage and bless others, so it's essential to choose them carefully. We should avoid boasting about things we won't follow through on, and when we need to correct or admonish someone, it's vital to do so kindly. Our words have the potential to be as precious as gold apples and beautiful ornaments, providing support and comfort to the souls of those around us. 

A fool is a person who acts unwisely and lacks judgment or sense. Be cautious when using the word or referring to someone as a "fool." Do not argue with a fool but rather refute the fool. 

"Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool." Proverbs 26:1 

Who do we honor? Those who are worthy of recognition. Fools do not deserve to be honored. They consistently make poor choices and bad decisions—over and over—and do not learn from mistakes.

We are advised to delight in God’s teaching and commands. It takes discipline to walk with God and practice applying His Truth to our hearts and lives. God’s Word is true and provides wise instruction and guidance.

The chapters in the book of Proverbs give us positive and negative examples. The Lord provides wise words of instruction because He wants to lead us on the path of righteousness. His Word presents guidelines for the right way we should live. 

"Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord, how then can man understand his way?" Proverbs 20:24 

We have choices to make each day. How will we act? What will we say? Where will we spend time? Who will we do business with? Consider your path and the choices you make. We pray each of us will yield our thoughts, actions, and words to the will and purpose of our Heavenly Father.
