- Cultural sin patterns and idolatry went unchecked despite the disaster

- Leaders called on God’s name without actually listening for him

The hypocrisy of many American politicians who eagerly motioned for non-biblical laws then turning around and calling on God’s name in a wave of patriotism is a great danger because it avoids examining what God may be doing with this calamity. David points to how this national tragedy should be a call for repentance and self-examination.
