We discussed how she grew up with both parents and had a normal life until she finished her undergraduate at UC Berkeley in just 3 years, married her childhood sweetheart at 21, and had a baby at 23. Unfortunately, the baby passed away and Dr. Mellin was scarred from surgery as a result and was given the news that she would not be able to have more children. We discussed how she grew up in a family involved in Alaska Tourism, which earned her father the nickname “Mr. Alaska.” After moving to Anchorage, she opened her first business which was a marketing consulting firm specializing in tourism. After setting up shop in an executive suit, she met the boy across the hall that would eventually become her husband. 

After a while they decided to focus on her husband’s business, Hawaiian Vacations, and began chartering wide body jets to carry Alaskans to Hawaii, as the existing air service was a bit variable. They were able to grow the business to the point that it was acquired by Alaska Airlines.

Today on the Women Influencers podcast, I spoke with Josie Legido Correa, the President-Elect of CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) Miami. She is also JWR Construction’s Director of Business Development for Florida.

We discussed her family’s immigration to the U.S. from Bolivia to get away from the revolutions and adversity when Janet was only 12. During her last year of college she met her first husband and they went on to have 3 children. Unfortunately, when her boys were 3, 5, and 7, Janet’s eyesight began to worsen until she was left totally blind. Despite this and many other challenges she faced, Janet was able to find solace in God’s word.

She decided that although she had blindness, blindness didn’t have her. She focused on taking care of her boys and moving forward. This led her to become a Spanish/English interpreter, and her tenacity led her to rise the ranks and become a trainer of interpreters. 

Now, she is a best-selling author and motivational speaker.

Rubi picked up working as a wedding photographer in order to leave her 9-5 job and spend more time with her son. Eventually, after some hardship, Rubi had to make a decision, either she was going to give up her hobby, or she was going to dive into the world of entrepreneurship. I think she made the right choice.

We discussed the challenges she faced in her childhood and early adulthood, having been raised in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California with her brother by their Father who is disabled. When things got tough, and they did, Denise remembered the recurring dreams she had of a future where she gave public speeches and helped people in different countries.

After her deployment, Denise took the opportunity provided to her by the G.I. Bill to complete her college education, earning her Bachelor’s and her Master’s degrees at California State University. She never felt she really fit in at any of the various jobs she tried, and after a boss refused her request to leave work to care for her sick sister, she decided she would make it her mission to never have a job again and quit on the spot. As Denise said, some people are just meant to be Entrepreneurs.

We discussed how she was born and raised in Puerto Rico and how, around the time Monica was graduating High School, her mom told her that the family was moving to the United States. After the move to Coral Springs, she racked up the family’s long distance phone bill keeping up with her friends and feeling homesick. At the time it didn’t seem like it, but now she knows the move was the best thing for her.

Monica attended FAU studying Business and Marketing in her undergrad and earning her MBA. After college, she worked a few corporate jobs and did a bit of residential Real Estate on the side until deciding to open her own brokerage. A few years into doing residential Real Estate full time, Monica realized it was not her forte and switched over to commercial.

We discussed how she grew up in Houston with her two siblings and their two cousins, under the guidance of her hardworking parents. She shared how her Grandfather was a self-made Entrepreneur who made sure that, although he was there to help if needed, his family worked to earn their own way. This taught Tiffany the value of hard work from a young age, and led her to attend Texas Southern University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), where her mother worked for 30 years.

While Tiffany was in her undergraduate studies, she met another student who was pursuing her Real Estate License and Tiffany decided she wanted to do that, too. She planned to practice Real Estate for 6 months before going to Law School, but that 6 months turned into a 17 year (so far!) fruitful career.  Today, she is the Broker Owner of Berkshire Hathaway Houston Tiffany Curry & Co.

After finding an opportunity to work in the sales side of the Hotel business, Robin remained in the Hospitality industry for 13 years running 28 hotels across the Southeastern US. At 32, he decided to get out of the Hotel business and later started his own business to sell hotels despite having no background in Commercial Real Estate. 3 years after starting his business, CCIM came into his world and taught him Real Estate.
