It was a risky venture for Studio Gibli, but arguably it's the movie that made them an international powerhouse animation studio. Animation nerds love this movie. References to it have shown up in the Toy Story franchise and even Bob's Burgers.

Will Allyson like My Neighbor Totoro as much as just about everyone else on the face of the planet?

After a long hiatus, the Bobbitts return to making each other watch a movie the other has never seen before. This week Mike makes Allyson watch Promising Young Woman.

Before Saltburn, there was Promising Young Woman. Emerald Fennell's 2020 movie dissects the so-called "nice guy". It's one-part thriller, one-part revenge porn, and one-part romantic comedy. Those three parts make up one hell of a movie. It stars Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham, and features more knockout performances from people like Sam Richardson, Laverne Cox, Jennifer Coolidge and Alison Brie. This movie was horribly underrated, but hopefully the success of Saltburn means people will go back and check out this pretty phenomenal picture.

Where The Heart Is

Where The Heart is got lost in the Star Wars hoopla even though it stars Queen Amidala herself Natalie Portman. It's the dramatic tale of a young pregnant lady abandoned at a Wal-Mart by the baby's father. Stuck in the middle of Oklahoma she's challenged with building a life for herself and her child.

A character piece set in America's heartland? This definitely seems like a surefire hit for Mike's taste. Oh! Stockard Channing and Keith David are in it too? It's going to be hard for this one to fail.

Now that he's closer to the icy cold hand of the grim reaper readying his scythe to usher Mike to the other side, will this still be as gripping as it once was? What will Allyson think of this existential film that largely flew under the radar?

Defending Your Life was written, directed and acted by Albert Brooks. It costars Meryl Streep, Rip Torn and Lee Grant. There's so much trivia about this, Mike doesn't even have time to mention that silent film star Maxine Elliott Hicks in a small role.

Frances Ha

Premiering in 2012, the same year as the HBO series Girls, it was difficult to not draw comparisons with Noah Baumbach's film Frances Ha. Heck, 11 years later it's still easy to connect the two. Both are about the post college lives of a female New Yorker trying to figure out her place in the world and in the lives of her kith and kin.

It's easy to dismiss Frances Ha, particularly if you found Lena Dunham's character Hannah on Girls to be a bit grating. But I urge you to put your prejudices aside and give Frances Ha a chance. Greta Gerwig, who has since gone on to write and direct stunning films on her own, collaborated with Baumbach to create a flawed character, but one who is easy to root for. Frances is the antithesis of Hannah.

She has an unstoppable forward momentum which ends up making for a really inspiring film. Shit, I'm a 50-year-old Midwesterner and this twenty something heroine inspired me to kick my forward momentum into a higher gear.

Just Friends

It's crazy to think that as recently as 2005 it was still considered a gamble to let Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris lead a movie, but New Line did that and struck gold! This helped launch both actors on their paths towards super stardom. Sure, the fat jokes won't land well with today's ultra sensitive audiences, but the concept of someone being stuck in the friendzone is so universal that this movie is a very funny comedic gem.

Amy Smart is also really solid in this, as she is in everything. It's a shame she didn't get the career that Reynolds and Faris have gotten. Maybe it was her knack of bouncing back and forth between comedy and grit, but in my opinion that just goes to show what an incredibly talented artist she is.

Chris Klein plays with his American Pie aw shucks expectations to create a really fun villain. And my MVP has to be Chris Marquette as the sex starved little brother from hell!

In 1987 Shane Black changed the face of cinema by making action movies more than just testosterone fueled set pieces to showcase muscles and pyrotechnics. His screenplay debut Lethal Weapon blended humor, complicated characters with...well...muscles and pyrotechnics.

Nine years later he got a chance to not only write Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr, but to direct it as well. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang not only includes all the elements that makes a Shane Black film great, but it's also a biting commentary on Hollywood, the system that made Shane Black who he is.

Mike is a well-documented lover of everything punk, and in his eyes, there are few writers out there as punk rock as Shane Black!

Will Allyson enjoy this dip into Shane Black's filmography as much as Mike? She grew up on the Lethal Weapon franchise and really enjoyed a screening they did of his 2016 unlikely action paring The Nice Guys.

Strangely, Die Hard is often debated as to whether it's a Christmas movie or not. The Christmasness of Die Hard always felt wedged in to me. In my mind, Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang clearly is a Christmas movie. More than that. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a Christmas Classic!

Mike is eager to share this Robert Downey Jr./Val Kilmer action mystery buddy picture with Allyson, and optimistically thinks she'll love it as much as he does.

Home for the Holidays

Jodie Foster considers this the second in an extremely personal trilogy of films she directed. Little Man Tate and The Beaver round out that trilogy.

The always excellent Holly Hunt goes home to spend Thanksgiving with her very dysfunctional family. Robert Downey Jr. is insanely wonderful and wonderfully insane as her black sheep brother. Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning play the parents doing everything in their power to keep the family together and the holiday tradition alive. Cynthia Stevenson completes the family as the tightly wound oldest sister. The entire cast is extraordinary and the writing and directing is so sharp. It's like a Thanksgiving David Mamet cinematic feast!

Commando

1985 is the summer that kicked off the box office rivalry between action powerhouses Slyvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Stallone had Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Arnold had the fun version of that movie, Commando!

Commando costars Rae Dawn Chong, Alyssa Milano, David Patrick Kelly, Bill Duke, and a very odd Dan Hedaya accent. This was a movie Mike loved to the point that a grease painted Arnold poster for this movie on his bedroom wall. To be fair, he also had an oily Stallone for First Blood Part 2 and a matchstick chomping Stallone Cobra on his walls too.

Will Allyson embrace the cheesy 80s over the top action as much as Mike did?

Stir of Echoes

Allyson makes Mike watch the 1999 Kevin Bacon thriller Stir of Echoes. It's a creative ghost story based on the 1958 Richard Matheson novel of the same name. Unfortunately, the timing of this big screen adaptation likely got lost in the shadow of the hugely popular M Night Shyamalan hit The Sixth Sense.

Still, Stir of Echoes has some great qualities, namely the outstanding supporting cast that includes the always wonderful Illeana Douglas and Kevin Dunn.

Dennis delivered with an absolutely trippy mindfuck of a heavy metal descent into madness starring Nicolas Cage. Mandy was written and directed by Panos Cosmatos. It not only serves as a bizarre love letter to all things dark and metal, but also the over-the-top action movies his father George Cosmatos directed like Stallone classics Cobra and First Blood Part 2. It would have been really cool if Cosmatos also directed Stallone in Over the Top.

Pirates of Penzance and the George Rose Murder

When life gives you lemons, make a murder podcast. Mike tries to salvage the episode by taking a deep dive into the complicated life and death of Penzance's Modern Major General George Rose.

George Rose was a Broadway legend, but his murder in the Dominican Republic leaves him literally lost to history in an unmarked grave. At the center of the eccentric thespian's death is his 18-year-old adopted "son".

Salem's Lot

Sharon Bobbitt joins Mike and Allyson for this special Halloween bonus episode of You Made Me Watch. Sharon, who I'll refer to as "my mom" here on out, read the Stephen King novel Salem's Lot when it first came out in the late 70s. She was disappointed by the made for television two-part event that premiered on CBS in 1979, but was eager to revisit it to see how it holds up. Mike has very vague recollections of it being terrifying, but he may be confusing those memories with the story his mom tells of reading the novel late at night while the kids were asleep, and Mike's dad was out of town. A storm crashed outside, and the electricity went out leaving my mom in the dark!

If there's one take away from this, it's that David Soul is no Harrison Ford, but then again Han Solo and Chewbacca are no Starsky and Hutch!

Spielberg's Second Box Office Disappointment and Recommendations

It was once explained to me that what makes Tiger Woods such a good golfer isn't the fact that he's the best, but the fact that he's very consistent. That can be said for Steven Spielberg too. I can't think of any movie he's made that's bad. All of them are somewhere between great and really good. 1941 was a flop at the box office, but it's really no worse than any of the other cocaine fueled John Belushi movies of that era. It's a fine spoof. Hook is a movie Spielberg kicked around for about a decade before taking a stab at it. He isn't super proud of the results, but it's a movie that has touched Allyson as well as many, many people her age.

Allyson, with great hesitation, recommends the Sword and Scale podcast.

Mike, true to form, recommends the all-female cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Then Allyson comes back and highly and confidently recommends Bridget Everett's HBO series Somebody Somewhere.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore

Mike had a pretty good hunch Allyson was going to love this movie about a woman who just gets fed up with people being assholes all the time.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is Jeremy Saulnier's main collaborator and best friend Macon Blair's dark comedy starring the always amazing Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Both are phenomenal and we can't wait to see them together in the next season of Yellowjackets on Showtime.

Macon Blair put together a great cast including a completely unrecognizable Jane Levy for this one, and he must be doing something right because just about everyone in this is reteaming with him next year for his take on the Troma classic The Toxic Avenger.

We simply cannot recommend this movie nearly enough!

Macon Blair's revenge fantasy preview + recommendations

I'm keeping the name of the next movie out of the title of the episodes going forward so you can find out the same time one of us does, which movie we're watching next week.

Next week Mike makes Allyson watch writer/director/actor Macon Blair's 2017 Netflix original about a woman who just wants people to stop being assholes.

Blair has said his film I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is the perfect companion piece to the Michael Douglas film Falling Down.

Mike recommends a little-known television show called Better Call Saul. Perhaps you heard of it? It's a sequel/prequel to another cult classic called Breaking Bad.

Allyson recommends a show that actually needs some attention, it's the true crime podcast The Fall Line. It covers murders that have gotten little to no media attention because apparently attractive white women aren't the only people going around getting murdered these days.

Rob Reiner had a pet project that he waited almost a decade to have enough pull in Hollywood that he could get this made. He wanted to adapt his friend Alan Zwiebel's novel North, about an exceptional kid in search of new parents, into a major motion picture. In spite of its pretty stellar cast including Elijah Wood, Jon Lovitz and Bruce Willis, the movie flopped hard.

Will Mike agree with both Siskel and Ebert that North is the worst movie of 1994, or will he side with Allyson and feel that North is a pretty charming and magical kid movie that the critics got wrong?

Mike recommends people, especially those in America who may only know the song "Tubthumper" to check out Chumbawamba's back catalog. The album WYSIWYG is a great starting point in his opinion.

Allsyon, to the surprise of absolutely no one, recommends the true crime podcast The Thing About Pam. It unwraps the multiple murders committed by the monstrous Pam Hupp.

The World According to Garp

Mike loved the movie and watching it for the podcast inspired him to finally read the book. Will Allyson find this John Irving adaptation as insightful and moving as Mike?

Mike read the 40-year anniversary edition of the book where Irving laments about how he hoped this investigation of the imbalance of genders would be a thing of the past, but it is unfortunately as relevant today as it was then...if not more so during this 40th anniversary of the movie now that Roe vs Wade has been reversed.

Mike explores in depth the differences between the 500+ page novel and what didn't make it to the 2 hour 16-minute-long film. He and Allyson also dream cast an HBO Max mini-series version of the novel too. Yeah, obviously they both picked Laverne Cox to play Roberta Muldoon.

The World According to Garp is an examination of gender, gender politics, feminism, radicalism, creativity, identity, parenting, and death. While that may sound daunting and heavy, this is also, at times, a whimsical story.

First Blood

The character of John Rambo become the personification of rightwing machismo, but he didn't start off that way. Much like using the song Born in the USA to rally behind, the Rambo character is a broken man, a dehumanized killing machine, a Frankenstein monster created by the US government.

The franchise suffers from the laws of diminishing returns, but will Allyson find enough there at the beginning to pique her interest, and will this hold up as well as ten-year-old 1982 little Mikey Bobbitt remembers?

Ice Pirates

My old high school friend Ted Craig stops by to watch Ice Pirates with us! Ice Pirates is pretty much the nail in the 1980s sci-fi adventure films. It just made it under the radar in 1984, making its budget back. A year later, it's likely to have been a PG-13 film and because of that, a huge flop.

Ice Pirates' budget was cut in half during production and rewritten as a comedy. It stars the late great Robert Urich, with a scene stealing segment featuring legendary writer/raconteur Bruce Vilanch and a troupe of Amazons! Or is it a gaggle of Amazons when they're with someone as witty as Bruce Vilanch?

It's a movie that features Space Herpes, Castrated Slaves, spandex galore, and Angelica Huston wearing rebar!

Hail Satan?

Allyson is a huge fan of the Last Podcast on the Left, where cohost Henry Zebrowski often speaks about satanism. So, Mike knew this 2019 documentary about The Satanic Temple would be right up Allyson's alley.

Penny Lane's documentary follows The Satanic Temple's efforts to use activism and ingenuity to expose the severe lack of separation of church and state within the United States. It also shows how with the rise in popularity of the organization, it begins to suffer its own division.

Mike finds a way to talk comedy too!

After doing research, the only place he was able to find the Chad Daniels bit about buying tampons was on a compilation called Farts: The Best of Bathroom Humor. It's a terribly named album, and there are dumb fart noises between each comic, but all that aside, the material on the album is largely good. That bit may also be on one of Chad's earlier albums too, but Mike couldn't find it quickly. You should totally check out Chad's work. Romeo + Juliet

In 1996, Baz Luhrman followed up his critically acclaimed Australian ballroom picture with his American blockbuster debut, a modernized adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. This is full of so many people who were on the cusp of breaking out into stardom like Leonardo DiCaprio, who up until this point was mostly known for gritty roles in independent movies like Basketball Diaries and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. It's also neck and neck with Clueless as Paul Rudd's big break.

Mike loves Luhrman's Moulin Rouge, and he's a moderate Shakespeare fan. Will Allyson make the right call in assuming this is going to be right up Mike's alley. Or will Mike gun it down in the street like the dude who played Augustus Hill in HBO's OZ?

Lords of Chaos

Allyson loves True Crime, so Mike was positive she was going to enjoy 2018's Lords of Chaos about the murder of Mayhem guitarist and founder Euronymous by the hands of his bandmate Count Grishnak. And spoiler alert, Mike was right!

Allyson and Mike sing the praises of the acting in this film, particularly by Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer and Ethan Cohen. All three were born around the exact time this story takes place, but all three actors perfectly capture the dynamics of the late 80s/early 90s black metal scene. Is so insanely opposite of his good natured and sweet role in the romantic masterpiece Brooklyn.

Sure, She's All That is a cheesy and predictable movie, but will the mere presence of Star Wars super fan Freddie Prinze Jr. and the always great Matthew Lillard be enough to make Mike enjoy this one. Or maybe he was better off only seeing Not Another Teen movie, the movie that sharply parodied this.

Two vs Malignant

Allyson and I rarely get to watch movies just for the hell of it. Over the last two weeks we both took dreadful missteps. I had us watch the Spanish thriller Two (Dos) on Netflix, then Allyson made us watch the latest from James Wan, Malignant.

Both movies were so utterly unenjoyable that the only way we can feel good about wasting three and a half hours of our lives is by warning you not to watch either of these!

We face off and pit these two disasters against each other. But don't worry, there are also references to Streetcar Named Desire, The Simpsons, and John Cameron Mitchell's Short Bus. So, it's not a total loss!

Sunset Blvd.

1950's Billy Wilder masterpiece Sunset Blvd is already beloved by film fans around the world. Mike is delighted to have this opportunity to introduce Allyson to this fairly controversial for its time film about the dark side of Hollywood and the disposable nature of fame.

Sunset Blvd stars William Holden, Gloria Swanson, and Nancy Olson. It also features real life legendary directors Cecil B DeMille and Erich von Stroheim in pretty substantial roles. Oh yeah, and super serious cop actor Jack Webb as a goofy assistant director. Oh man, Sunset Blvd is chocked full of greatness.

And don't forget, Norma was fucking the monkey.

Sliding Doors

Gwenyth Paltrow's cleverly disguised acting demo reel showcases her ability to do a posh English accent.

1998's Sliding Doors is a movie about that great eternal question, "what if things were different?" We follow Paltrow's character through to parallel timelines that part when she either does or doesn't catch a train.

It costars John Hannah, who I think Americans will know best as the sidekick from those Mummy movies.

Has Rebel Wilson's satire of rom-coms "Isn't It Romantic" done too good of a job highlighting all the cliches and faults of the genre to make this movie hold up? Maybe Paltrow's own questionable ideas will make Sliding Doors difficult to digest.

So catch the train or miss it, either way, you're about to find out what Mike and Allyson thought about Sliding Doors.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet

As dirty as I pretended The Little Mermaid was, this DEFINITELY has very kinky undertones. So not to kink shame, but Mr. Limpet, starring Don Knotts in his first lead role in a film is about a guy who clearly is okay with his buddy banging his wife, because he really wants to bang fish...oh yeah, and join the Navy to fight Nazis. But he's REALLY into fish. Like, as soon as he magically turns into a fish, he immediately falls in love with one. And he fights Nazis, but he REALLY wants to spawn with this lady fish...appropriately named Ladyfish. This one is a doozy!

Our friend Jeff Siadak, who by all accounts is a great human being and had a near perfect track record of friendship before this, suggested this one.

This is one hell of an odd couple whodunit.

Eraserhead

Each week they go back and forth and make the other watch a movie they've never seen before.

James Van Der Beek totally isn't Dawson from Dawson's Creek because he has different color hair. Ali Larter from Heroes doesn't have super powers because if she did, she'd probably use them to teleport herself out of this 1999 thing that happened. You can probably guess, we didn't love this one. But it did make us think of Letterkenny, so there's that. And Mike gets to educate Allyson on the unsolved mystery about what happened to Varsity Blues actor Joe Pichler.

It's Brian Robbins' film directing debut before Eddie Murphy hired him for all those cash grab comedies. It's written by the dude who wrote Point Break as well. So y'know, you're in for some ultra macho bromance. No homo...let's watch Varsity Blues!

The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

The Santa Clause trilogy is now complete! Last year Mike and Allyson tackled the first two movies in the Tim Allen Christmas franchise, but had to tap out. This year, they finish the saga of Scott Calvin with The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Will this be more akin to the original Star Wars trilogy or will it be more like the most recent trilogy where it suffers the laws of diminishing returns? Can comedy legend Martin Short's Jack Frost be magnetic enough to save the film? Will the chemistry of Alan Arkin and Ann-Margaret be the scene stealing energy needed to bring this trilogy to a smooth landing? Will we have more creepy Tim Allen robots? How well will Spencer Breslin fill David Krumholtz's elf shoes?

Art LaFleur, Aisha Tyler, Kevin Pollak, Michael Dorn, Jay Thomas, and Peter Boyle are all back.

Elizabeth Mitchell surprisingly gets her own character arc and isn't swept aside even though she was arguably the strength of The Santa Clause 2. Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, Liliana Mumy, and Eric Lloyd are all back as well.

Will The Santa Clause 3 be an unexpected hit despite it's dismal performance at the box office, or will this be the movie that ruins Christmas for Mike and Allyson?

Lander who is best known as Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley. David Lander has a fascinating career that Mike knows a lot about, but is in no state to talk about for reasons that will become immediately apparent upon listening to this episode. Heck, Mike even calls him David S. Lander, which is totally wrong. Dennis is like a brother to Mike and has become a close part of the Bobbitt family. Will that rock solid bond fall apart after this bat shit crazy of a movie?

Oh yeah, and Dennis' wife Erin, who Mike has known for as long as he's known Dennis is there too, but again, Mike fucked up and didn't give her a microphone.

A young girl forced to live with her evil stepfather war General escapes to a fantasy world. Pan's Labyrinth is whimsical, gritty, magical and brutal all at once. It's quite frankly, a masterpiece! Will Allyson agree with Mike's assessment, or will the graphic violence and peril be too much for her?

This week, metalhead bartender and all around teddy bear Sam Evans makes us watch a woefully underrated gem called Cook Off!

Cook Off! was co-written and directed by Cathryn Michon...who it's criminal she doesn't have a much, much bigger career because this movie is absolutely fantastic! Its cast is a who's who of character actors, including so many people who have been on Reno 9-1-1. It's insane how great this movie is, considering it was shelved for ten years before finally being released.

If you like the Christopher Guest mockumentaries, chances are, you're going to like Cook Off! as well. Imagine Best in Show, but set in the world of cooking competitions.

It's a pretty stellar feminist movie too with great performances from Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jennifer Elise Cox, a comedic performance from Christine Rose, Niecy Nash, a pre-Bridesmaids scene stealing Melissa McCarthy, and the great Markie Post!

Allyson was 20 years old in 2002 when The Sweetest Thing released and it really spoke to her. It was written by Nancy M. Pimental, hot off of South Park. It's a Cameron Diaz led flick that tries to capture the over the top wackiness of There's Something About Mary. How does The Sweetest Thing hold up 18 years later? Will a 37 year old Allyson still enjoy it? Can she and Mike find anything enjoyable about this movie besides a mutual respect and admiration for fellow Michigander Selma Blair?

This was a humongous miscommunication. Allyson thought Mike saw Cats in the theater and wanted to watch it again, so she's counting this as one of his podcast titles. This is the first time either of them watched the 2019 infamously maligned feline flick. I think it's fair to say, neither of them enjoy this. But will this be the movie that leads to a divorce? Or will their marriage still have eight lives left?

Happy Halloween! This week they watched Lake Mungo, as suggested by Johnny Mocny from the We Are Movies podcast.

Lake Mungo is a 2010 Australian horror/triller/mystery by writer/director Joel Anderson. It's a shame Joel doesn't seem to have any credits after this, because Lake Mungo, like the much more well known Australian horror film Babadook is an excellently crafted piece of existential art and storytelling. Alice Palmer drowns and then her family starts to experience strange things as they unravel the mystery of who Alice really was.

This week, Allyson makes Mike watch 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Kevin Williamson was hot off of reigniting fresh blood in the horror genre with Scream, so the studios were eager to see what else he'd written. He ended up selling an earlier screenplay "I Know What You Did Last Summer". Columbia Pictures cast a bunch of the hottest young stars of the time to make this a box office hit. Leading the cast is Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. But is it enough to create an enduring classic or is I Know What You Did Last Summer another run of the mill slasher flick?

Sleepaway Camp (w/ Sam Rager)

Husband and wife comedians Mike Bobbitt and Allyson Bobbitt take turns making each other watch a movie the other has never seen.

This week, they make their dear friend comedian/writer/podcaster Samantha Rager watch Sleepaway Camp.

Robert Hiltzik's 1983 Sleepaway Camp is a movie that scarred Mike for decades when he saw it in the theater at 11 years old. He was already watching horror movies of the day and had a subscription to Fangoria, but there was something about seeing kids his own age get killed in a slasher flick and the twist ending that literally caused him nightmares for over 30 years until he revisited the movie as an adult. Now Sleepaway Camp has become a favorite to both him and his wife Allyson.

Will Sam Rager find this as terrifying as a young Mike did, or will she appreciate the silliness of it like an adult Allyson does?

Even if they movie's infamous ending doesn't cause a scare, the ending to this week's episode will come as quite a shock.

This 1985 Horror/Comedy debut by Stuart Gordon is the perfect film to kick off a month of horror films to celebrate Halloween! Re-Animator has it all...blood, boobs, and lots and lots of dongs. Classically trained actor Jeffrey Combs makes his debut leading a movie instantly making himself the William Shatner of splatter films. This movie knows exactly what it is and it doesn't shy away from being the best version of that possible. Re-Animator is a classic!

It was a good year for thrillers so surely this has to be one of those rare gems that only the cool people know about, right? Right? Hell, it's under 90 minutes so how bad could it be? This movie is bat shit crazy town bonkers! But I can't urge you enough to watch it, then listen to this episode.
